Digestion trials were conducted to evaluate intake and digestibility of grass harvested at different dates. Silage was prepared from first-growth forage (predominantly timothy) which cutting dates; 4 June (vegetative, called early-cut) and 30 June (heading, called late-cut). The silage was fed to wethers at restricted and ad libitum levels of intake. The crude protein and crude fat of silage decreased with advancing maturity, while contents of fibre increased. DM intake of early-cut and late-cut silage were $99g/W_{kg}^{0.75}\;and\;75g/W_{kg}^{0.75}$, respectively. In digestibility and TDN, significant differences (p<0.01) between early-cut and late-cut silage were found. There was no significant difference in DM digestibility of early-cut silage between restricted and ad libitum feeding, but DM digestibility was decreased markedly in ad libitum feeding that out of account in fecal condition. Digestibility of all composition in early-cut silage, except for hemicellulose, was not observed with increasing levels of intake. Digestibility of crude protein, NDF and hemicellulose in late-cut silage were decreased (p<0.05) in ad libitum when compared with restricted feeding. Results of this study suggest that digestibility of early and late forages harvested as silage varies with levels of intake. Thus, relationship levels of intake and digestibility must be considered cautiously.
1. Objective : The present author have examined the comparative effects of Hyeongbangjihwang-tang and Sibimikwanjung-tang in glycerol-induced acute renal failure, a model for myoglobinuric acute renal failure. 2. Methods : Above two prescriptions were applied to rat ad libitum and serum level of creatinine, glucose and blood urea nitrogen(BUN) were measured. And serum level of $Na^+$, $K^+$ and $Cl^-$, too. 50%(vol/vol) glycerol at a dose of 10 ml/kg of rat body weight intramuscularly and 1% concentration of prescriptions were applied to rats for 7 days ad libitum. 3. Results : Serum level of creatinine and $K^+$ significantly increased by glycerol injection, and these showed pre-renal and renal cause of acute renal failure. Hyeongbangjihwang-tang administered group showed decreasing tendency on serum level of creatinine when compared with control groups, but not significant. Sibimikwanjung-tang administered group showed significant increase of serum level of BUN when compared with control groups. 4. Conclusions : Above two prescriptions showed no significant changes on glycerol induced acute renal failure, but Hyeongbangjihwang-tang and Sibimikwanjung-tang showed a little different manner of response.

This study investigated the changes in the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) activities during food restriction in the rat brain such as cerebral cortex, cerebellum, caudate pautamen and hypothalamus. The rats were placed on a restricted feeding schedule consisting of half the ad libitum quantity for 3 days and 1, 2, 4, 6 and 9 weeks, and a free feeding schedule for 4 weeks. The loss of body weight peaked after 1 week of food restriction and persisted during the entire 9-week period of food restriction. The dramatic weight change in the first week ($12\%$) and the reduction in weight changes thereafter suggest that major adaptation changes occur early and body maintenance occurs subsequently. In the hypothalamus, the optical densities of the NADPH-d and nNOS immunoreactivities were found to be significantly higher in the 1-week and lower in the 9-week food restricted group than in the ad libitum fed control rats. In contrast, in the cerebral cortex, the optical densities of the NADPH-d- and nNOS-positive neurons were not changed significantly during the period of food restriction. This study provides the morphological evidence showing that food restriction has a significant effect on the nitric oxide synthesizing system of the hypothalamus.
This study was aimed to investigate the relations between self-selected intake of 3 macronutrie-nts and body weight gain and body fat accumulation in male rats given three isocaloric diets differing carbohydrate protein and fat contents concurrently. Also the effect of dietary restriction was observed. Forty two male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain weighing 68.7$\pm$6.1g were randomly divided into 2 groups and were allowed to have foods from 3 different cups for 8-hours a day or ad libitum, After 12 weeksthey were decapitated and their brains were quickly removed and frozen until they were assayed for serotonin and its metabolite 5-HIAA The carcass was dried at 105$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$ and measured the contents of body water and body fat. The animals chose a moderately high and constant carbohydrate level and showed the increase of percent protein intake with age and great individual variations. Protein in the diet seemed to trigger appetite and increase food intake which resulted in higher weight gains and in more fat deposition in the body. The concentration of brain serotonin did not show any correlations with the intake of nutrients. the accumulation of body fat and the gain of body weight.
Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) balance technique was used to determine energy balance in Rhode Island Red (RIR) and White Leghorn (WL) laying hens fed maize-and broken rice (BR)- based diets. Carbon and nitrogen intake and outgo were determined for three days on ad libitum fed diets followed by 2/3 of ad libitum intake for next three days. Carbon analysis was done by using four 'U' tubes in which carbon dioxide released during bomb calorimetry was absorbed on drierite in tube 1 and 2 whereas tube 3 and 4 contained sodalime self indicating granule. Carbon in $CO_2$ was determined by an open circuit respiration system. Energy retention (E, kcal) was calculated as E = 12.386 C (g) - 4.631 N (g). By regressing metabolisable energy (ME) intake on energy balance, maintenance ME requirement of RIR was 128 whereas, that of WL hens was $144kcal/kg\;W^{0.75}/d$. Effciency of utilization of ME for maintenance from BR-based diet in RIR hens was equal but in WL hens it was 11% less than maize-based diet.
Forty cross bred ($168\;{\pm}\;28\;kg$) bull calves were offered either untreated (US) or urea ammonia treated (TS) rice straw at five levels of feeding, namely; 60, 80, 100, 120 140% of ad libitum. Ad libitum level for each animal was estimated over a period of one month, which was followed by a preliminary period of 21 days and a collection period of 15 days. The maximum organic matter intake (OMI-kg/100 kg BW) were 2.08 and 3.35 for US and TS, respectively and urea treatment increased the maximum OMI by 61% than for US. In order to reach maximum intake the amount feed refusal should be 25% for US, but with TS maximum intake was not reached even when the amount of feed refused was 39% of that consumed. The OMD of US significantly decreased with increase in OMI, whereas with TS the decrease was not significant. The inability of animals to select between stems and leaves particularly in TS might be one of the reasons for its constant digestibility. Considering the substantial increases in intake and the negative effect on digestibility of US, further trials are warranted, as well as studies to determine the practical implications.
Two hundred fifty eight Hanwoo steers were used in a completely randomized design experiment to determine the effects of ad libitum or restricted feeding of concentrates on body weight(BW) gain, feed intake, blood metabolites and hematological parameters. Steers were assigned at 6 months of age to feeding groups of ad libitum(T1) or restricted(T2) by 18 months of age. Steers in both groups were fed ad libitum from 19 months of age. The restrictive feeding levels were 1.2-1.5% of BW for the growing period and 1.7-1.8% of BW for the early fattening period. Average daily gains were significantly higher in T1 than in T2 from 10 to 14 months of age, but were significantly higher in T2 than in T1 from 20 to 24 months of age(p<0.05). Total dry matter intake(DMI) was higher in T1 than in T2 at 10, 12 and 16 months of age(p<0.05). Total DMI of T2 was higher than that of T1 at 22 months of age(p<0.05). Feed conversions were significantly lower in T2 than in T1 from 20 to 30 months of age(p<0.05). Blood albumin concentrations were significantly higher in T2 than in T1 at 12, 14, 16 and 18 months of age. Blood triglyceride concentrations were significantly higher in T1 than in T2 at 14 and 16 months of age(p<0.05). Blood inorganic phosphorus concentrations were significantly higher in T2 compared with T1 at 8, 10, 16 and 22 months of age(p<0.05). Mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin were significantly lower in T2 than in T1 from 8 to 12 months of age(p<0.05), but those were significantly higher in T2 than T1 from 10 months to 12 months of age(p<0.05). Present results may indicate that the restricted feeding for the growing period does not show adverse effects on body weight gain with better feed conversion for the following late fattening period.
The objectives of this work was to investigate the effects of feeding type of concentrates during growing period and slaughter age on growth performance, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics in growing-fattening Holstein steers. Treatments were two concentrates feeding types(ad libitum or restricted 1.9% of BW) and three slaughter ages(at 19, 22 or 25 mo). Body weight at slaughter was numerically higher(approx. 8.3%) for the restricted than the ad libitum feeding groups. TDN intake rate was higher(8.4%) for the restricted than the ad libitum feeding groups. One mo slaughter delay increased TDN intake by 4%. Despite the lack of significances, higher back fat thickness and rib-eye area appeared in the restricted feeding or the late slaughter groups compared with the ad libitum feeding or the early slaughter groups. Marbling score(mean 2.46) numerically increased when the steers were restrictively fed concentrates compared with the ad libitum feeding groups. In addition, significant increases in the marbling score were associated with the slaughter age delay. In economic analysis, increases in total income were associated with the restricted feeding and the slaughter age delay. Whereas the highest monthly income appeared in the restricted feeding-and-slaughter at 22 mo group. In conclusion, the optimal feeding system may be 1) the restricted concentrates feeding(1.9% of BW) during growing period and 2) the late slaughter age(22${\sim}$25 mo of age) in growing-fattening Holstein steers fed rice straw.
To investigate the effects of feeding restricted on growth, carcass characteristics and plasma profiles in an attempt for optimum responses, a total of 108 cross-bred finishing barrows [(Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire)${\times}$Duroc]weighing an average of $46.88{\pm}0.52kg$ were assigned in a randomized complete block (RCB) design to one of four treatments with three replicates and nine pigs per pen. Feeding regimens were, 1) ad libitum from 50 kg to market weight (Ad 3/3), 2) restricted feeding from 90 kg to market weight (Ad 2/3), 3) restricted feeding from 70 kg to market weight (Ad 1/3), and 4) restricted feeding from 50 kg to market weight (Ad 0/3). During the experimental period, average daily feed intake (ADFI) was decreased from 2.53 kg (AD 3/3) to 2.09 kg (AD 0/3) with increasing restricted feeding duration of (p<0.05). Average daily gain (ADG) of AD 3/3 (0.79 kg) was significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of AD 1/3 (0.74 kg) or AD 0/3 (0.72 kg). Feed efficiency was not influenced by restriction regimens. Blood IGF-I concentrations were increased from 74.14 to 134.25 (167.36-115.66) ng/ml as body weight increased. Blood leptin concentrations were affected by feed intake level and coincided with blood IGF-I concentrations. Most of carcass characteristics were not significantly affected by restricted feeding, however cooking losses in AD 1/3 and Ad 0/3 treatment diet were higher than those in Ad 3/3 and Ad 2/3. In addition, there was a trend that backfat thickness was lowered in proportional to decreasing feed intake (p>0.05). In conclusion, restricted feeding improved feed efficiency after 50 kg body weight without deteriorating the pork quality of barrows.
The protective effects of BNs-3 and BNs-7, extracts of citrous orange peel, on the obesity induced by ad libitum feeding a cholesterol-containing diet to rats were investigated. The animals were fed on the diet including cholesterol (0.5%) with or without the citrous orange peel extracts BNs-3 (5%) and/or BNs-7 (0.1%) for 8 weeks. The ad libitum feeding a diet containing cholesterol to rats from 6 weeks of age increased the body weight gain compared with that of rats fed on a normal diet. Such an increase in body weights was markedly attenuated by the addition of BNs-3 or BNs-7 to the diet. Especially, a combinational feeding on BNs-3 and BNs-7 significantly reduced the body weight gain below that of normal diet-fed animals. Interestingly, the weights of abdominal adipose tis-sues surrounding epididymides were greatly reduced by the citrous orange peel extracts, in parallel with the decrease in body weights. In addition, blood concentrations of lipids including cholesterol were also lowered by the combinational treatment with BNs-3 and BNs-7. Taken together, it is suggested that the obesity and overweight produced by unrestricted overfeeding on diet with cholesterol may be partially due to the accumulation of abdominal adipose tissues, around the epididymides in rats, and that citrous orange peel extracts might exert antiobese activities by reducing the adipose tis-sues as well as blood lipid concentrations.
