  • Because of MANET's dynamic characteristic, the hidden node problem can happen. Thus it must use with distributed channel access. In Ad hoc networks, carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance(CSMA/CA) is one of the most widely used medium access control(MAC) schemes for asynchronous data traffics. However, CSMA/CA could not guarantee the quality of multimedia traffics. CSMA is a contention based protocol. Therefor once a node gets a channel, it can momopolze. Thus the fairness problem with channel starvation will happen. We will propose a new MAC protocol to guarantee QoS for multimedia data in ad hoc networks.

  • Recently, several MAC protocols using the directional antennas have been proposed for wireless mobile ad hoc networks. In the theory, it can improve spatial reuse and communication throughput in the Mobile Ad-hoc networks. But, or However even though direction transmissions using the Directional MAC protocol(D-MAC) are expected to provide significant improvements, they causes other problems such as deafness problem and fairness problem. In this paper, we analyze the D-MAC protocol in Mobile Ad-hoc network for Vehicle to vehicle(V2V) communication. Through the results of the analysis, We the fundamental problem of D-MAC protocol and finally we suggest new D-MAC protocol for V2V networks.

  • The directional medium access control (MAC) protocol improves the throughput of mobile ad hoc networks but has a deafness problem and requires location information for neighboring nodes. In the dual-channel directional MAC protocol [12], the use of omnidirectional packets does not require the exact location of destination node. In this letter, we propose a tone dual-channel MAC protocol with directional antennas to improve the throughput of mobile ad hoc networks. In the proposed MAC protocol, we use a directional CTS and an out-of-band directional DATA tone with a new blocking algorithm to improve the spatial reuse. We confirm the throughput performance of the proposed MAC protocol by computer simulations using the Qualnet simulator.

  • Being different from traditional mobile communication networks or wireless LAN with access points, ad hoc network can provide direct communications between homogeneous stations. Thus, it can be considered as a much advanced network. Somehow, many researches have been done to enhance system performance of ad hoc networks up to now, one of which is cooperative communications. In this paper, a cooperative MAC protocol, called CO-MAC protocol, is proposed and its performance is evaluated with a mathematical approach. Numerical results show that this scheme provides more enhanced system throughput especially when frame transmission error probability is high than DCF scheme, which is the key protocol in IEEE 802.11 standard, and rDCF scheme.

  • Ad hoc network is a wireless network without fixed base stations or any wired backbone infrastructure. In the DUDMAC protocol, ORTS and OCTS in control channel solve the problem of deafness and DDATA and DACK in data channel improve spatial reuse by using the efficient blocking algorithm for directional antennas. In this paper, we propose the PCDUDMAC (Power Controlled DUDMAC) protocols. In the PCDUDMAC protocol, the power control of DATA/DACK in data channel saves transmission power and improves spatial reuse. We confirm the throughput performance of the proposed MAC protocol by computer simulations using Qualnet ver.3.8 simulator.

  • This paper presents the design of a reservation-based MAC protocol to support multimedia traffic over mobile ad-hoc networks and evaluates its performance. Our MAC protocol is based on a hierarchical approach consisting of two sub-layers. The lower sub-layer of the MAC protocol with reservation provides a fundamental access method using CSMA/CA in order to support asynchronous data traffic over mobile ad-hoc networks. The upper sub-layer supports real-time periodic data by making a slot reservation before transmitting actual data. The proposed protocol has been validated through simulations using ns-2. The results show that the proposed MAC protocol can offer higher throughput and lower delay than standard implementations of the IEEE 802.11.

  • Until now, much research on cooperative communications to increase system throughput at Ad Hoc networks has been provided. In this paper, in order to enhance system throughput much more at Ad Hoc networks, a network coding-enabled new MAC protocol, called NC-MAC protocol, is proposed and its performance is evaluated with a mathematical approach. Numerical results show that this scheme provides conspicuously enhanced system throughput compared to DCF scheme, and more increased system throughput by 48% than rDCF and CO-MAC schemes.

  • Cooperative communications and network coding schemes have been proposed to increase system throughput for ad hoc networks. In this paper, we present throughput and delay analysis of the new network coding-enabled cooperative MAC protocol called NC-MAC, which has been proposed by us in order to significantly enhance system performance. This protocol introduces an approach that can accommodate both cooperative communication and network coding for wireless ad hoc networks by slightly increasing overhead and modifying standards. The protocol's performance is evaluated using mathematical analysis and computer simulation and two performance measures, system throughput and average channel access delay, are used for a performance comparison with previous schemes. It is assumed that all the frames exchanged over a wireless channel are susceptible to transmission errors, which is a new but more reasonable assumption differentiating this research from previous research. Numerical results show this protocol provides significantly enhanced system performance compared with conventional cooperative MAC protocols used in previous research. For instance, system performance is 47% higher using the NC-MAC protocol than when using the rDCF protocol.

  • MAC frame aggregation is a method that combines multiple MPDUs (MAC protocol data units) into one PPDU (PHY protocol data units) to enhance network performance at the MAC layer. In ad hoc networks, TCP underperforms due to the congestion window overshooting problem and thus by setting CWL (congestion window limit) TCP performance can be improved. In this paper, we investigate the problem of setting CWL for TCP performance optimization in ad hoc networks with MAC frame aggregation.
