A preparation of water soluble components(EA) was made from carpophores of Elfvingia applanata(Pers.) Karst and its in vitro antibacterial activity on a number of bacterial species was examined by macrobroth dilution assay. Among 16 species of bacteria tested, the most potent antibacterial activity was observed against Staphylococcus epiderrnidis and Proteus vulgaris, of which MICs were 1.25 mg/ml. To investigate the antibacterial effects in combinations of EA with quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin, enoxacin, lomefloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin, the fractional inhibitory concentrations(FICs) and the fractional inhibitory concentration indices(FICIs) for four bacterial strains were determined by macrobroth dilution checkerboard assay. Combinations of EA and quinolones exhibited either additive or indifferent effects of antibacterial activity in most instances. However, both synergistic and antagonistic effects were not observed in any cases.
ALA (5-aminolevulinic acid) has been proposed as a tetrapyrrole-dependent photodynamic herbicide by the action of the protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (Protox IX). A study was conducted to determine photodynamic herbicidal effect of ALA on seedling growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi) under dry and wet conditions. ALA effect on early plant growth of rice and barnyardgrass was greatly concentration dependant, suggesting that it promotes plant growth at very low concentration and inhibits at high concentration. No significant difference in herbicidal activity of biologically and synthetically produced ALAs on plant lengths of test plants was observed ALA exhibited significant photodynamic activity regardless of PSDIP and its duration. Significant shoot growth inhibition by ALA soaking treatment exhibited apparently, indicating that ALA absorbed through root system was translocated into shoot part of plants. ALA reduced plant heights of rice and barnyardgrass seedlings by 6% and 27%, respectively, showing more tolerant to ALA in rice under wet condition. Leaf thickness was reduced markedly by ALA with increasing of ALA concentration, due to mainly membrane destruction and severe loss of turgidity in mesophyll cells, although the epidermal was little affected. It was observed that photodynamic herbicidal activity of ALA applied by pre-and post-emergence application exhibited differently on plant species, and that the activity of ALA against susceptible plants was highly correlated with growing condition.
This study examined the antioxidant and neuronal cell protective effects of the water and methanol extracts of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. The total polyphenol content was significantly higher in the methanol extract than in the water extract. The DPPH radical scavenging activity in the water extract was similar to Vit. C at a concentration of $100{\sim}200{\mu}g/mL$. The ABTS radical scavenging activity in the water and methanol extract was similar to Vit. C at a concentration of $800{\sim}1,000{\mu}g/mL$. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity in the methanol extract was similar to Vit. C at a concentration of $800{\sim}1,000{\mu}g/mL$. The DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging and (SOD)-like activity increased with increasing extract concentration. In a cell viability using MTT, the water extract (50 and 100 ppm) and methanol extract (100 ppm) had a protective effect against $H_2O_2$-induced neurotoxicity. The result ssuggest that the extract of E. caryophyllata Thunb. has antioxidant activities and may be useful for treating neurodegenerative disorders.
The $Ag^{2+}$ solution was constructed by supplying pure metal silver in filtrated distilled with constant voltage. The solution at the $Ag^{2+}$ concentration of 10 ppm showed specific activity against Gram positive and negative bacteria. More than 90% activity showed against Candida albicans ATCC 102321 at the same concentration. The addition of DASA, $Ag^{2+}$ and artemisia mixture, in the EVLN had same activity by comparison with chemical synthetic antiseptic.

PERT formulae for the mean and variance of activity time are near exact only over a short interval of the concentration parameter which is defined as the sum of the two shape parameters of the beta distribution. Aiming a better estimation of the mean and variance of activity time, we propose a method of subjectively estimating this concentration parameter via estimating the probability of completing the activity within a specified time interval.
Anticoagulant activities of a fermented edible brown alga, Laminaria ochotensis was investigated. L. ochotensis was fermented with 15% sugar (w/v) at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 weeks. Anticoagulant activity was measured from the supernatant of algal mixture at biweekly intervals up to $10^{th}$ week by activated partial thromboplastin (APTT), prothrombin time (PT) and thrombin time (TT) assay using citrated human plasma. Sample having high APTT activity $(6^{th}\;week)$ was filtered, ethanol precipitated and freeze-dried. The polysaccharide compound having anticoagulant activity was purified by DEAE ion exchange chromatography followed by Sepharose-4B gel filtration chromatography. Anticoagulant activity, polysaccharide concentration, and heparin like activity were determined for the collected fractions by APTT, $phenol-H_2SO_4$, and glycosaminoglycan assay, respectively. The anticoagulant activity assay showed that the activity was increased up to $6^{th}$ week, and decreased thereafter. The concentration of our purified compound was $31.0{\mu}g/ml$ and showed higher APTT activity than commercial heparin. At the same concentration of $31.0{\mu}g/ml$, the heparin showed 186.5 sec activity while our purified compound showed an activity of 386 sec. Single spot on agarose gel electrophoresis showed that the compound was purified and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) results revealed that the molecular mass of the purified polysaccharide compound was between 60 and 500 kDa. Therapeutic interest of the algal polysaccharide as an anticoagulant has recently been in highlighted. This purified anticoagulant compound from fermented L. ochotensis can be used as a model for anticoagulant agent or could be developed as an anticoagulant agent. This study can be extended to identify the structure and chemical composition of the purified polysaccharide, and to establish a relationship between structure and the function of the identified anticoagulant compounds.
Xanthium sibiricum using extracts antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity were analyzed and the following results were obtained. Antioxidant activity using DPPH as a VLC column fractionation experiments XS-5 (water fraction of Xanthium sibiricum) concentration in the 500 ${\mu}g/ml$ to 87.53 percent in the highest antioxidant activity was found, VLC fractionation in XS-3-2 (eluted with chloroform/methanol 7~10%) concentration of 500 ${\mu}g/ml$, showed the antioxidant activity of 78.72%. The antioxidant activity measured by PCL XS-1 (n-hexane fraction of Xanthium sibiricum) XS-5 (water fraction of Xanthium sibiricum) and 13.32 nmol open column XS-3-2 (eluted with chloroform/methanol 7~10%) showed antioxidant activity with 14.34 nmol. The antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans XS-2 (methlene chloride fraction fo Xanthium sibiricum) is the concentration of 500 ${\mu}g$/disc 1 mm of the clean zone was formed. XS-3 (ethanol fraction fo Xanthium sibiricum) in the antioxidant activity using DPPH and PCL had higher antibacterial activity was low.
The effects of branched chain amino acids and metabolites in growth media on the biosynthesis of Serratia marcescens threonine dehydratase activity were examined. The enzyme activity was decreased above 60% by leucine among the range from 1 to 20 mM, and the enzyme activity was decreased approximately 20% by a low concentration of valine (1 to 4 mM), but not affected at high concentration (20 mM). However, the enzyme activity was increased approximately 100 to 140% by a low concentration of isoleucine (1 to 4 mM), but decreased approximately 25 to 80% at high concentration (15 to 30 mM). The enzyme activity was decreased by 25 and 58% by the simultaneous addition of all three branched chain amino acids at 2 and 10 mM concentration, respectively, but increased by 75 and 50% by the combination addition of isoleucine plus valine and isoleucine plus leucine at 2 mM, respectively. cAMP was decreased the enzyme activity approximately 10 to 40% by a low concentration (1 to 2 mM), but increased by 80% at high concentration (10 mM). These data suggest that S. marcescens threonine dehydratase should be multivalently repressed by branched chain amino acids, but positively regulated by a low isoleucine concentration and may play a regulatory role in an isoleucine biosynthetic pathway unlike the E. coli K-12 enzyme.

Phenolic compounds of $17.9{\pm}1.0mg/g$ were extracted from Ulmus pumila with 70% ethanol. The elastase inhibitory activity related with forming wrinkle was shown an excellent wrinkle improvement effect in 70% ethanol extracts as 55.5-69.5% at phenolic concentration of $50-200{\mu}g/mL$. The tyrosinase inhibitory activity related with skin-whitening was 24% in 70% ethanol extracts at phenolic concentration of $200{\mu}g/mL$. The astringent activity of 70% ethanol extracts was shown activity of 71% at phenolic concentration of $200{\mu}g/mL$ therefore it is judged that there is a high effect on pores reduction of the skin. The hyaluronidase inhibitory activity of U. pumila extracts was confirmed anti-inflammation effect of 80% at phenolic concentration of $50{\mu}g/mL$. Antimicrobial activity of U. pumila water extracts was shown each 8.7, 10.0, 11.1 and 11.8 mm clear zones on Propionebacterium acnes at phenolic concentration of $50-200{\mu}g/mL$. The stability of the multi-functional cosmetic (lotion) added U. pumila extracts was very stable for 28 days without changing of pH and viscosity also it's stable on temperature and sun lights. As the concentration of extracts was increased, the color of lotion was getting dark, but the sensory evaluation was high at score of 8.5.
Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the effects of Smilacis GlabraeRhizoma on antioxidation and antimicrobial activity. Methods : In this study, we investigated the effects of peroxide radicals on hydrogen donating activity and linoleic acid, and the MDA contents on the hepatic lipids of rats, via methanol extractions and subfractions of Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma. Results : 1. Hydrogen donating activity was very great for the radical scavenging effects, depending on the additional concentration at the fraction level of chloroform and ethyl acetate. 2. The peroxide radicals in linoleic acid were lower depending on the additional concentration, at the fraction level of ethyl acetate, than the controls. We concluded that both had significant anti-oxidation effects. 3. MDA contents of the hepatic lipid had also inhibition effects on lipid radicals, in proportion to the concentration of n-hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate fraction level. 4. After extracting Smilads Glabrae Rhizoma with 80% methanol, we experimented with the extracts the antibiosis each concentration, for 5 bacilli, Bacilus subtilis, staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonela typhimurium, and Alcaligenes faecalis. While the effects showed differentiations by concentration, they had usually the significant inhibition effect for the multiplication at 37.5~75ug/ml. To identify the effective constituents, we identified the antibiosis of the fractions assaying cyclically hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and butanol. The result showed that antimicrobial activation of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacillus except for E. coli was measured highest at the fraction level of BuOH and water. Conclusions : This result suggest that the extractions of Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma, at ethyl acetate fraction, had significant anti-oxidation effects and at BuOH and water fraction had relatively strong antimicrobial activity against Bacilus subtilis, staphylococcus aureus, Salmonela typhimurium, and Alcaligenes faecalis.
