Vibrations of a wind turbine blade have a negative impact on its performance and result in failure of the blade, therefore an approach to effectively control vibration in turbine blades are sought by wind industry. The small domestic horizontal axis wind turbine blades induce flap wise (out-of-plane) vibration, due to varying wind speeds. These flap wise vibrations are transferred to the structure, which even causes catastrophic failure of the system. Shape memory alloys which possess physical property of variable stiffness across different phases are embedded into the composite blades for active vibration control. Previously Shape memory alloys have been used as actuators to change their angles and orientations in fighter jet blades but not used for active vibration control for wind turbine blades. In this work a GFRP blade embedded with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) and tested for its vibrational and material damping characteristics, under martensitic and austenite conditions. The embedment portrays 47% reduction in displacement of blade, with respect to the conventional blade. An analytical model for the actuated smart blade is also proposed, which validates the harmonic response of the smart blade.

This paper proposes a hierarchical approach to shape model ASM using wavelet transform. Local structure model fitting in the ASM plays an important role in model-based pose and shape analysis. The proposed algorithm can robustly find good solutions in complex images by using wavelet decomposition. we also proposed effective method that estimates and corrects object's movement by using Wavelet transform-based hierarchical motion estimation scheme for ASM-based, real-time video tracking. The proposed algorithm has been tested for various sequences containing human motion to demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed object tracking.
In this paper, we present an approach for facial expression recognition using Active Shape Models(ASM) and a state-based model in image sequences. Given an image frame, we use ASM to obtain the shape parameter vector of the model while we locate facial feature points. Then, we can obtain the shape parameter vector set for all the frames of an image sequence. This vector set is converted into a state vector which is one of the three states by the state-based model. In the classification step, we use the k-NN with the proposed similarity measure that is motivated on the observation that the variation-regions of an expression sequence are different from those of other expression sequences. In the experiment with the public database KCFD, we demonstrate that the proposed measure slightly outperforms the binary measure in which the recognition performance of the k-NN with the proposed measure and the existing binary measure show 89.1% and 86.2% respectively when k is 1.
The Active Appearance Model (AAM) is a class of deformable models, which, in the segmentation process, integrates the priori knowledge on the shape and the texture and deformation of the structures studied. This model in its sequential form is computationally intensive and operates on large data sets. This paper presents another framework to implement the standard version of the AAM model. We suggest a distributed and parallel approach justified by the characteristics of the model and their potentialities. We introduce a schema for the representation of the overall model and we study of operations that can be parallelized. This approach is intended to exploit the benefits build in the area of advanced image processing.
Helical structures made of superelastic shape memory alloys are widely used as interventional medical devices and active actuators. These structures generally undergo large deformation during expansion or actuation. Currently their behaviour is modelled numerically using the finite element method or obtained through experiments. Analytical tools are absent. In this paper, an analytical approach has been developed for analyzing the mechanical responses of such structures subjected to axial and torsional loads. The simulation results given by the analytical approach have been compared with both numerical and experimental data. Good agreements between the results indicate that the analysis is valid.
In this study, a finite element analysis approach is proposed to predict the fluid-structure interaction behavior of active materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are mainly composed of graphite powder. The porous matrix of graphite powder saturated with fluid electrolyte is considered a representative volume element (RVE) model. Three different RVE models are proposed to consider the uncertainty of the powder shape and the porosity. P-wave modulus from RVE solutions are analyzed based on the microstructure and the interaction between the fluid and the graphite powder matrix. From the results, it is found that the large surface area of the active material results in low mechanical properties of LIB, which leads to poor structural durability when subjected to dynamic loads. The results obtained in this study provide useful information for predicting the mechanical safety of a battery pack.
Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) have been installed in many high-rise buildings, to improve their resiliency under dynamic loads. However, high-rise buildings may experience natural frequency changes under ambient temperature fluctuations, extreme wind loads and relative humidity variations. This makes the design of a TMD challenging and may lead to a detuned scenario, which can reduce significantly the performance. To alleviate this problem, the current paper presents a proposed approach for the design of a robust and efficient TMD. The approach accounts for the uncertain natural frequency, the optimization objective and the input excitation. The study shows that robust design parameters can be different from the optimal parameters. Nevertheless, predetermined optimal parameters are useful to attain design robustness. A case study of a high-rise building is executed. The TMD designed with the proposed approach showed its robustness and effectiveness in reducing the responses of high-rise buildings under multidirectional wind. The case study represents an engineered design that is instructive. The results show that shear buildings may be controlled with less effort than cantilever buildings. Structural control performance in high-rise buildings may depend on the shape of the building, hence the flow patterns, as well as the wind direction angle. To further increase the performance of the robust TMD in one lateral direction, active control using LQG and fuzzy logic controllers was carried out. The performance of the controllers is remarkable in enhancing the response reduction. In addition, the fuzzy logic controller may be more robust than the LQG controller.

It has been shown in the literature that active adjustment of the intake area of a jet engine has potential to improve its fuel efficiency. This paper presents the design and control of a novel proof-of-concept active jet engine intake using Nickel-Titanium (Ni-Ti or Nitinol) shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuators. The Nitinol SMA material is used in this research due to its advantages of high power-to-weight ratio and electrical resistive actuation. The Nitinol SMA material can be fabricated into a variety of shapes, such as strips, foils, rods and wires. In this paper, SMA wires are used due to its ability to generate a large strain: up to 6% for repeated operations. The proposed proof-of-concept engine intake employs overlapping leaves in a concentric configuration. Each leaf is mounted on a supporting bar than can rotate. The supporting bars are actuated by an SMA wire actuator in a ring configuration. Electrical resistive heating is used to actuate the SMA wire actuator and rotate the supporting bars. To enable feedback control, a laser range sensor is used to detect the movement of a leaf and therefore the radius of the intake area. Due to the hysteresis, an inherent nonlinear phenomenon associated with SMAs, a nonlinear robust controller is used to control the SMA actuators. The control design uses the sliding-mode approach and can compensate the nonlinearities associated with the SMA actuator. A proof-of-concept model is fabricated and its feedback control experiments show that the intake area can be precisely controlled using the SMA wire actuator and has the ability to reduce the area up to 25%. The experiments demonstrate the feasibility of engine intake area control using an SMA wire actuator under the proposed design.
In this paper we propose an image-based approach, which is different from the traditional flow cytometric method to detect shape of apoptosis cells. This method can overcome the defects of cytometry and give precise recognition of apoptosis cells. In this work K-means clustering was used to do the rough segmentation and an active contour model, called 'snake' was used to do the precise edge detection. And then some features were extracted including physical feature, shape descriptor and texture features of the apoptosis cells. Finally a Mahalanobis distance classifier classifies the segmentation images as apoptosis and non-apoptosis cell.
In this paper, we propose a 3D modeling method using Laser Slit Beam and Stereo Camera. We can get depth information of image by analyzing projected Laser Slit Beam on object. 3D modeling is demanded exquisite merge of 3D data. In our approach, we can get the depth image where the reliability is high. Each reconstructed 3D modeling is combined by the sink information which is acquired by SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) Algorithm. We perform experiments using indoor images. The results show that the proposed method works well in indoor environments
