  • In Diffserv Network, RIO is the most effective active queue management algorithm. RIO, the enhanced queue management algorithm from RED, divides IN and OUT packets and manages them differently. one of the main problems for the implementation of RIO is the Bandwidth Skew problem for providing the Assured Service. In this paper, we will show the bandwidth skew problem in RIO and provide an enhanced RIO mechanism that will alleviate the bandwidth skew problem.

  • Existing Internet services were almost supported by the best effort service such as the data transmission service and were allowed the transmission delay and packet loss. However, recent Internet multimedia services such as Internet phone, Internet broadcasting are required a real-time processing and high bandwidth. Therefore, many studies for providing Internet QoS are performed at IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). As the buffer management mechanism among IP QoS methods, active queue management method such as RED (Random Early Detection) algorithm has proposed. However, RED algorithm has a limitation of usage of an average buffer length and unfairness. So, many algorithms proposed as the modified algorithm of RED. But these modified algorithms also have difficulties to satisfy the requirements of various Internet user QoS. Therefore, in this paper we propose the QoS adaptive AQM (Active Queue Management) algorithm for the multimedia services that request various QoS requirements and present a performance evaluation by the simulations using the ns-2.

  • The AQM (Active Queue Management) starts dropping packets earlier to notify traffic sources about the incipient stage of congestion. The AQM improves fairness between response flow (like TCP) and non-response flow (like UDP), and it can provide high throughput and link efficiency. In this paper, we suggest the QVARED (Queue Variation Adaptive RED) algorithm to respond to bursty traffic more actively. It is possible to provide more smoothness of average queue length and the maximum packet drop probability compared to RED and ARED (Adaptive RED). Therefore, it is highly adaptable to new congestion condition. Our simulation results show that the drop rate of QVARED is decreased by 80% and 40% compare to those of RED and ARED, respectively. This results in shorter end-to-end delay by decreasing the number of retransmitted packets. Also, the QVARED reduces a bias effect over 18% than that of drop-tail method; therefore packets are transmitted stably in the bursty traffic condition.

  • Rate-based flow control plays an important role for efficient traffic management of Available Bit Rate(ABR) services. We deal with the problem of the buffer dimension for rate-based ABR control. In this paper, we analyze the Allowed Cell Rate(ACR) of a source and the queue size in a steady state. First, we investigate the effect of the number of active sources on the behavior of the ACR and the maximum queue size. Reflecting the effect of this real scenes, we determine the optimal buffer size and buffer threshold. Furthermore, our analytic results are compared with the case when the effect of the number of active sources is disregarded.

혼잡처리에 있어 새로운 처리 방식은 AQM(Active Queue Management)이다.

  • Recently many studies have been done on the Random Early Detection(RED) algorithm as an active queue management and congestion avoidance scheme in the Internet. In this paper we first overview the characteristics of RED and the modified RED algorithms in order to understand the current status of these studies. Then we analyze the RED dynamics by investigating how RED parameters affect router queue behavior. We show the cases when RED fails since it cannot react to queue state changes aggressively due to the deterministic use of its parameters. Based on the RED parameter analysis, we propose a self-adaptive algorithm to cope with this RED weakness. In this algorithm we make two parameters be adjusted themselves depending on the queue states. One parameter is the maximum probability to drop or mark the packet at the congestion state. This parameter can be adjusted to react the long burst of traffic, consequently reducing the congestion disaster. The other parameter is the queue weight which is also adjusted aggressively in order for the average queue size to catch up with the current queue size when the queue moves from the congestion state to the stable state.

  • In this paper, we propose nonlinear congestion controller for active queue management of differentiated-services networks. Two important issues in differentiated-services architecture are bandwidth guarantee and fair sharing of unsubscribed bandwidth among TCP flows with and without bandwidth reservation. The nonlinear congestion controller was composed fuzzy logic controller and state feedback controller. The nonlinear congestion controller methodology has been applied to a TCP network. We use NS-2 simulation to demonstrate that the proposed control methodology achieves the desired behavior of the network, and possesses important attributes.

  • In this paper, we propose a control scheme for improving the performance of a conventional Proportional-Integral (PI) controller for Active Queue Management (AQM) supporting TCP flows. When the PI controller is used for AQM, the windup phenomenon of the integral action causes the performance degradation. Therefore we model AQM as a system with a saturator and apply anti-windup methods to the PI controller for AQM. We compare the performances of anti-windup algorithm with the conventional PI controller through ns simulations. The simulation results show that the PI controller with anti-windup method performs better than the conventional PI controller.
