Narrow commuter vehicles can address many congestion, parking and pollution issues associated with urban transportation. In making narrow vehicles safe, comfortable and acceptable to the public, active tilt control systems are likely to playa crucial role. This paper focuses on the development of an active direct tilt control system for a narrow vehicle that utilizes an actuator in the vehicle suspension. A simple PD controller can stabilize the tilt dynamics of the vehicle to any desired tilt angle. However, the challenges in the tilt control system design arise in determining the desired lean angle in real-time and in minimizing tilt actuator torque requirements. Minimizing torque requirements requires the tilting and turning of the vehicle to be synchronized as closely as possible. This paper explores two different control design approaches to meet these challenges. A Receding Horizon Controller (RHC) is first developed so as to systematically incorporate preview on road curvature and synchronize tilting with driver initiated turning. Second, a nonlinear control system that utilizes feedback linearization is developed and found to be effective in reducing torque. A close analysis of the complex feedback linearization controller provides insight into which terms are important for reducing actuator effort. This is used to reduce controller complexity and obtain a simple nonlinear controller that provides good performance.

Background: Although studies have been conducted on muscle thickness and balance in trunk stabilization exercise and exercise using vibration props, studies on trunk stabilization exercise using active vibration for spinal alignment are still insufficient to draw a conclusion. Objectives: To investigate the effect of trunk stabilization exercise using active vibration on the spinal alignment in adult females. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Methods: Twenty-six adult females were randomly assigned to the experimental group (active vibration) and 13 control groups (active non-vibrating) and exercised three times a week for 8 weeks. Each group was measured for spinal alignment before exercise and 8 weeks after exercise. Spinal alignment, trunk imbalance, pelvic tilt, and pelvic torsion were measured using a spinal alignment analyzer. Results: Trunk imbalance was a significantly different depending on the time in the experimental group and the control group (P<.05). Pelvic tilt was a significant difference between the groups (P<.05). Also, pelvic tilt was a significantly different depending on the time in the experimental group (P<.05), but the control group showed no significant difference (P>.05). Pelvic torsion was no significant difference in both groups (P>.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that trunk stabilization exercise using active vibration has a positive effect on the alignment of the spine.

To reduce the traffic congestion and parking problems in urban areas tall and narrow vehicles have interested as a means to increase the utilization of existing freeways and parking facilities. The stability problem for those narrow vehicles which might be caused can be reduced by tilting the body toward the inside of the turn. The Direct Tilt Control(DTC) system and the Steering Tilt Control(STC) system have been proposed for those narrow vehicles. In this paper, as one of the performance improvement for that kind of vehicle a new control system to use the merits of both the DTC system and the STC system is proposed. Because two different control systems fight each other, the switching control scheme is applied as a means to prevent fighting. Also, the method in order to achieve the smoothly changed control system when the system is switched from the DTC to the STC or from the STC to the DTC, the appropriate type of control gain is designed.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of active release technique on pain, Oswestry Disability Index, and pelvic asymmetry in chronic low back pain patients. METHODS: Thirty five outpatients diagnosed with chronic low back pain were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided randomly into an active release technique therapy group(experimental group; n=18) and myofascial release technique therapy group(control group; n=17). These groups performed their respective therapy for a 40-minute session occurring twice a week over six weeks. The Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) was used to measure the subjects' pain, and the Korean Oswestry Disability Index(KODI) was used to measure the subjects' dysfunction. To assess the patients' pelvic asymmetry, their pelvic tilt and pelvic rotation were measured using X-ray imaging. RESULTS: Both the experimental group and control group exhibited significant decreases in their VAS and KODI scores after the therapy(p<.05). The experimental group exhibited a significant decrease in their pelvic tilt and pelvic rotation after therapy(p<.05). A significant difference was observed between the experimental group and the control group (p<.05). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that active release technique is effective in decreasing the level of pain and dysfunction in chronic low back pain patients. In addition, the active release technique is considered to be more effective in improving the pelvic tilt and pelvic rotation than myofascial release technique. This can be an effective method for the non-pharmacological and non-surgical treatment of chronic low back pain.

There are many researches going on to develop the information storage devices using Blue-ray disc and DVD as a demand for high-density information storage devices is highly increasing. This high-density information storage device requires a short-wave laser and objective lens of high numerical aperture set in fer its operation. And, that brings out rapid decrease of tilt tolerance. Therefore, it is necessary that an actuator should control tilt motions to get a stable signal. In this paper, a new mathematical form of 3-D.O.F coupled model is formulated and magnetic circuit in constraints is most effectively designed with the use of the moving coil type actuator in higher sensitivity. Further, this paper presents a tilt coil whose rotational center point is put on that of the lens through the variation of tilt coil and proposes a 3-axis actuator with high sensitivity improved in its dynamic property through its structure analysis.
Background: Uncontrolled lumbopelvic movement leads to asymmetric symptoms and causes pain in the lumbar and pelvic regions. So many patients have uncontrolled lumbopelvic movement. Passive support devices are used for unstable lumbopelvic patient. So, we need to understand that influence of passive support on lumbopelvic stability. It is important to examine that using the pelvic belt on abdominal muscle activity, pelvic rotation and pelvic tilt. Objects: This study observed abdominal muscle activity, pelvic rotation and tilt angles were compared during active straight leg raise (ASLR) with and without pelvic compression belt. Methods: Sixteen healthy women were participated in this study. ASRL with and without pelvic compression belt was performed for 5 sec, until their leg touched the target bar that was set 20 cm above the base. Surface electromyography was recorded from rectus abdominis (RA), internal oblique abdominis (IO), and external oblique abdominis (EO) bilaterally. And pelvic rotation and tilt angles were measured by motion capture system. Results: There were significantly less activities of left EO (p=.042), right EO (p=.031), left IO (p=.039), right IO (p=.019), left RA (p=.044), and right RA (p=.042) and a greater right pelvic rotation angle (p=.008) and anterior pelvic tilt angle (p<.001) during ASLR with pelvic compression belt. Conclusion: These results showed that abdominal activity was reduced while the right pelvic rotation angle and anterior pelvic tilt angle were increased during ASLR with a pelvic compression belt. In other words, although pelvic compression belt could support abdominal muscle activity, it would be difficult to control pelvic movement. So pelvic belt would not be useful for controlled ASLR.
One of the most important factors so that mobile objects can achieve their purpose is the information about their positions. In this paper, we propose an improved beacon system, to which ultrasonic sensors are attached, for the indoor localization of mobile objects. We have researched so that it can cover the wider space and estimate more accurate positions than the existent beacon systems. The existent beacon systems have the constraint that one beacon cannot cover wide area since ultrasonic sensors have limits in the angle of signal (beam-angle) on which their signal strength depends. Hence, we used the active beacon which consists of a pan-tilt mechanism and a beacon module. The active beacon system can always aim at mobile objects in order to transmit the strongest signal of the ultrasonic sensors into the objects using the pan-tilt mechanism. In addition, this system is inexpensive because it can decrease the number of beacons by about a half of the beacons of the existent system. Finally, the results show what is the difference between the active beacon system and existent beacon systems, and how accurate it is.

In optical disk drives (ODD), the demands of high data density and high speed have been increasing rapidly to achieve high data capacity and data transfer rate. The short wavelength laser, High NA objective lens, and high track following performance are needed to raise data density and data rate. For high-performance actuator, the improvement of linearity and acceleration become more important. Also, 3-axis actuator for active tilt compensation is introduced to overcome the decrease in disk tilt tolerance which is induced by short wavelength laser. In this paper, a hybrid type 3-axis actuator is presented and a new yoke structure, which can reduce the interaction between yoke and moving magnet, is designed to keep the efficiency of magnetic circuit. Experimental results show the validity of the yoke in the hybrid type actuator.

The flow simulations around ducted-prop of tilt-duct aircraft were conducted in this study. For the investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of various configurations of duct, the axisymmetric flow calculation method combined with actuator disk model for prop were used. The rapid two-dimensional calculation and fast grid generation enable aerodynamic analysis for various duct configurations in a very short time and anticipated to active role in optimal configuration design of duct exposed to various flight modes. For the case of angle of attack or tilt angle, the three dimensional flow calculation is conducted using the three dimensional grid simply generated by just revolving the axisymmetric grid around center axis. Through the three dimensional calculation around duct, the aerodynamic effectiveness of duct as a lifting surface in airplane mode was investigated. The flow calculations around the control vane (wing) installed in the rear section of duct were conducted The aerodynamic data of wing were compared with the data of the ducts to evaluate the aerodynamic effectiveness of ducts.
