There are the stirring test and drain test in the daily performance test to determine the thermal performance of a domestic solar hot water system. The drain test is a test that measures the discharge heating rate while drain the hot water from the top of the storage tank and supply the city water to the bottom of the tank. From the perspective of the user, this drain test is more effective than the stirring test. In this study, the thermal performance were compared through the drain test for a passive type and an active type domestic solar hot water systems consisting of the same storage tank and collectors. At this point, a passive type was used the horizontal storage tanks, and an active type was used vertical storage tank. In the drain test, when the hot water drained up to the reference hot water temperature, an active type which have vertical storage tank represents excellent daily performance than a passive type which have horizontal storage tank regardless of weather conditions. The reason for this is because the vertical storage tank is advantageous to thermal stratification in the tank. After the drain test, the residual heat for the horizontal storage tank was much more than the vertical storage tank, but in the next day the amount of discharged heat were less than the those of vertical storage tank neither. Thus, the solar water heating system which have horizontal storage tank should be adopted preheating control method rather than separate using control method when connected with auxiliary heat source device.
In this study, through case studies, solar energy systems were coordinated with architectural plan elements and the others in apartment complex, and the energy performance was evaluated quantitatively through computer simulation PVSYST and RETScreen. As a results, in plan process of the application of solar energy systems in apartment complex, solar energy system should be considered as not only energy reducing technical element but also part of architectural plan element. And it must be considered with architectural plan elements, composition methods, energy storage methods, technical elements from the early basic plan stage. Photovoltaic system was installed on the wall facing the south and rooftop. The energy ratio of electric load was shown to be 5.5%. The result showed 7.2% when adding it to shading device additionally, and 6.4% in case of putting extra translucent module on windows. Active solar collecting system was applied on roof with the angle of 45. Maximum number of solar collector was 10 in a row, and the total solar collecting area was $915.00m^2$. The energy ratio of domestic water heating load by active solar hot water system is shown to be 11.4%.
Magnetic helicity injection in 28 solar active regions producing 46 CMEs was investigated to find its relationship with the occurrence and speed of CMEs. The helicity injection in the active regions under investigation was calculated using full-disk 96 minute MDI magnetograms. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, the 46 CMEs are categorized into two different groups by two characteristic evolution patterns of helicity injection in their active regions: (1) a monotonically increasing of helicity accumulation (Group A; 30 CMEs in 23 active regions) and (2) significant helicity injection followed by its sign reversal (Group B; 16 CMEs in 5 active regions). Second, a fairly good correlation between the helicity injection rate and the CME speed is found for the 30 CME events in Group A. Further statistical studies, however, are needed to check whether the two characteristic helicity patterns are shown in other CME-productive active regions.

It is well known that there are good relations of coronal hole (CH) parameters such as the size, location, and magnetic field strength to the solar wind conditions and the geomagnetic storms. Especially in the minimum phase of solar cycle, CHs in mid- or low-latitude are one of major drivers for geomagnetic storms, since they form corotating interaction regions (CIRs). By adopting the method of Vrsnak et al. (2007), the Space Weather Research Center (SWRC) in Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has done daily forecast of solar wind speed and Dst index from 2010. Through years of experience, we realize that the geomagnetic storms caused by CHs have different characteristics from those by CMEs. Thus, we statistically analyze the characteristics and causality of the geomagnetic storms by the CHs rather than the CMEs with dataset obtained during the solar activity was very low. For this, we examine the CH properties, solar wind parameters as well as geomagnetic storm indices. As the first result, we show the different trends of the solar wind parameters and geomagnetic indices depending on the degree of solar activity represented by CH (quiet) or sunspot number (SSN) in the active region (active) and then we evaluate our forecasts using CH information and suggest several ideas to improve forecasting capability.
We present a way of quantitatively characterizing solar active regions on the basis of their evolutionary paths. To determine characteristic properties of active regions with different sizes and configurations, we use a physics-based model to derive a relation between emerged magnetic flux and injected magnetic helicity (Flux-Helicity relation), the former of which gives scale information while the latter represents the magnetic field configuration of an active region. We demonstrate how this relation provides evolutionary paths of active regions and determines their characteristic properties, through a comparison with modeled active regions obtained from magnetohydrodynamic simulations.

We investigated n-i-p type single junction hydrogenated amorphous silicon oxide solar cells. These cells were without front surface texture or back reflector. Maximum power point efficiency of these cells showed that an optimized device structure is needed to get the best device output. This depends on the thickness and defect density ($N_d$) of the active layer. A typical 10% photovoltaic device conversion efficiency was obtained with a $N_d=8.86{\times}10^{15}cm^{-3}$ defect density and 630 nm active layer thickness. Our investigation suggests a correlation between defect density and active layer thickness to device efficiency. We found that amorphous silicon solar cell efficiency can be improved to well above 10%.

Polymer solar cells utilize bulk heterojunction (BHJ) type photo-active layer in which the electron donating polymer and electron accepting C60 derivatives are mixed together. In the BHJ system the electron donating polymer and electron accepting C60 derivatives are blended. The blended system causes charge recombination at the interface between the BHJ active layer and electrode. To reduce the charge recombination at the interface, it is needed to use an interlayer that can selectively transfer electrons or holes. We have developed solution processable wide band gap inorganic interfacial layers for polymer solar cells. The effect of interlayers on the performance of polymer solar cell was investigated for various types of conjugated polymers. We have found that inorganic interfacial layers enhanced the solar cell efficiency through the reduction of charge recombination at the interface between active layer and electrode. Furthermore, the stability of the polymer solar cell using the interlayer was significantly improved. The efficiency of 6.5% was obtained from the PTB7:PCBM70 based solar cells utilizing $TiO_2$nanoparticles as an interlayers.
We investigated the device performance of bulk heterojunction solar cells depending on the active layer thickness. For the systematic comparison, the polymer solar cells comprising RR-P3HT:PCBM (1:0.8 (wt%:wt%)) blend films with different thickness were characterized by impedance spectroscopy, and J-V measurement in dark and solar simulated illumination. The device with 120 nm thickness of active layer exhibited maximum power conversion efficiency of 3.5 % under AM 1.5 100mW/$cm^2$ illumination condition.
One of the most important characteristic curves of a solar cell is its current density-voltage (J-V) curve under AM1.5G insolation. Solar cell can be considered as a semiconductor diode, so a diode equivalent model was used to estimate its parameters from the J-V curve by numerical simulation. Active layer plays an important role in operation of a solar cell. We investigated the effect thicknesses and defect densities (Nd) of the active layer on the J-V curve. When the active layer thickness was varied (for Nd = 8×1017 cm-3) from 800 nm to 100 nm, the reverse saturation current density (Jo) changed from 3.56×10-5 A/cm2 to 9.62×10-11 A/cm2 and its ideality factor (n) changed from 5.28 to 2.02. For a reduced defect density (Nd = 4×1015 cm-3), the n remained within 1.45≤n≤1.92 for the same thickness range. A small increase in shunt resistance and almost no change in series resistance were observed in these cells. The low reverse saturation current density (Jo = 9.62×10-11 A/cm2) and diode ideality factor (n = 2.02 or 1.45) were observed for amorphous silicon based solar cell with 100 nm thick active layer.

The field of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) is being researched actively at present. Because DSC has several advantages to pass the limits of Si solar cells such as a low manufacturing expense, a simple manufacturing process and its transparency. A lot of researches are underway about materials and processes in the field of dye-sensitized solar cell but its structure has been fixed up as the sandwich structure that both edges are used as positive and negative terminals. But the structure as of present is a factor of decreasing efficiency because the more electrons are recombined the further distance from terminal, considering about the characteristic of dye-sensitized solar cell that electrons generated inside cell are moved by diffusion. In this study, we made experiment on expanding the terminal to shorten internal moving distance of electron and compared the results according to the variation of active area to find out the effect of this trial. As a result, we achieved about 15.5% improvement of maximum power and 0.5% improvement of efficiency from terminal-expanded dye-sensitized solar cell of $2cm^{2}$ active area and concluded that the increasing rate of efficiency is raised as the active area becomes wider.
