  • An active ${\mu}$-mixer is important in Bio-MEMS and ${\mu}$-TAS. The mixing state depends on some kinds of factors including the intensity of ultrasonic radiation. We have visualized the mixing state of the mixing chamber with radiation time and presented the influence of the driving voltage in this research. It will be possible to compare the performances of the ultrasonic radiation parts used in the active ${\mu}$-mixer using this method.

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics of an end-capped hull structure with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators are studied. Finite element modeling is used to obtain practical governing equation of motion and boundary conditions of smart hull structure. Modal analysis is conducted to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the hull structure. Piezoelectric actuators are attached where the maximum control performance can be obtained. Active controller based on Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) theory is designed to suppress vibration of smart hull structure. It is observed that closed loop damping can be improved with suitable weighting factors in the developed LQG controller.

  • Decentralized Dynamic Surface Control(DDSC) for a class of nonlinear system interconnected via sensor network is presented in this paper. While a centralized design approach of DSC was developed in [1], the decentralized approach to deal with complex large-scale systems is proposed under the assumption that interconnected functions among subsystems are known via sensor network. As shown in [2], the separation principle for DDSC will allow us to design an estimation filter independently. Furthermore, the theoretical results are used to design and simulate an active vibration isolator under the assumption that many embedded sensors are distributed and communicate each other via wireless communication.

  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling and controller design for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The actuator and sensors for the MFC actuator equations were derived based on pin-force model. The boundary conditions at both ends were assumed to be shear diaphragm. After calculating the natural vibration characteristics, the positive position feedback controller was designed to cope with the first two modes. To this end, the equations of motion were reduced to modal equations of motion by considering the modes of interest. The theoretical results show that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.

  • This paper presents a novel approach for Lamb wave based structural health monitoring(SHM) in honeycomb aluminum panels. In this study, a suite of three signal processing algorithms are employed to improve the damage detection capability. The signal processing algorithms used include wavelet attenuation, correlation coefficients of power density spectra, and triangulation of reflected waves. Piezoelectric transducers are utilized as both sensors and actuators for Lamb wave propagation. These SHM algorithms are built into a MatLab interface that integrates and automates the hardware and software operations and displays the results for each algorithm to the analyst for side by side comparison. The effectiveness of each of these signal processing algorithms for SHM in honeycomb aluminum panels under a variety of damage conditions is then demonstrated.

  • Wide dynamic range active pixel sensor(APS) using a charge pump circuit has been designed by using 2-poly 4-metal $0.35{\mu}M$ standard CMOS technology. The structure of the proposed APS is similar to the structure of the conventional 3-Tr APS. The proposed unit pixel consists of one photodiode and three MOSFETs. Using a charge pump circuit, the dynamic range of the proposed APS is increased, compared to the conventional 3-Tr APS.

  • Rodents, specially rats, can recognize distance and shape of an object and also pattern of the textures by using their whiskers. Mechanoreceptors surrounding the root of whisker in their follicle measure deflection of the whisker. Rats can move their whisker back and forth freely. This ability, called active whisking or active sensing, is one of characteristics of rat behaviours. Many researches based on the mechanism have been progressed. In this paper, we test a simple and accurate method based on deflection of the whisker: we designed biomimetic whiskers modeling after a structure of follicle using the microphone. The microphone sensor measures a mechanical vibration. Attaching an artificial whisker beam to the microphone membrane, we can detect a vibration of whisker and this can show the deflection amount of whisker indirectly.

  • In this survey paper, the application research and development trends of piezoelectric materials are reviewed. Advantages and disadvantages of piezoelectric materials, and the recent research to overcome the drawbacks are discussed. The market of piezoelectric sensors and actuators in USA, Japan, and EU is surveyed with several examples. In Korea, the analytical research concerning piezoelectric materials is active but the developments of devices and equipments are not so active, and the investment in this field is necessary.

  • Assembly is usually performed by one robot and fixtures. This type of assembly system has Low flexibility in terms of variety of parts and part-presentation that the system can handle. This paper addresses assembly without fixtures using two-manipulator robot. An active method using force feedback is proposed for the peg-in-hole assembly in highly uncertain environment. Assembly states are described by extended contact relations. Qualitative templates for events are easily derived from the token vector of the Petrinet model. The states are recognized through identification of the events using two 6-d.o.f force/moment sensors. The proposed method is verified and evaluated through experiments with round peg- in-hole assembly.
