  • Trace levels of uranium and thorium in geologic samples are determined rapidly by a direct wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence method. Relative intensity of scattered tube radiation was used as an internal standard to compensate for variations in instrumental operating characteristics. U and Th can be determined within a precision of ${\pm}10%$ and accuracy of ${\pm}15%$ or less with measuring times of 50 seconds for Th and 400 seconds for U, respectively. The results of XRF analysis were in good agreement with those of other methods such as nutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry.

  • Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death worldwide; however, despite major advances in cancer treatment during the past two decades, the prognostic outcome of lung cancer patients has improved only minimally. This is largely due to the inadequacy of the traditional screening approach of diagnosis in lung cancer, which detects only wellestablished overt cancers and fails to identify precursor lesions in premalignant conditions of the bronchial tree. In recent years this situation has fundamentally changed with the identification of molecular abnormalities characteristic of premalignant changes; these concern tumour suppressor genes, loss of heterozygosity at crucial sites and activation of oncogenes. Basic knowledge at the molecular level has extremely important clinical implications with regard to early diagnosis, risk assessment and prevention, and therapeutic targets. In this study we used a 'cap-finder' subtractive hybridization method, 'long distance' polymerase chain reaction (PCR), streptavidin magnetic beads mediated subtraction, and spin column chromatography to detect differential expression genes of human small cell lung carcinoma. We have now isolated ninety two genes that expressed differentially in the human small cell lung carcinoma cells and analyzed of 12 clones with sequencing, nine cDNAs include tapasin (NGS-17) mRNA, BC200 alpha scRNA, chromosome 12q24 PAC RPCI3-462E2, protein phosphatase 1 (PPPICA), translocation protein 1 (TLOC1), ribosomal protein S24 (RPS24) mRNA, protein phosphatase (PPEF2), cathepsin Z, MDM2 gene and three novel genes. They may be oncogenesisrelated proteins.

  • Recently, we have proposed a hypothesis that spinal structures have a stress sensor driving feedback mechanism, In the human spine, spinal structure could react to modify muscular action in such a way so as to equalize stress at the disc, therefore reduce the risk of injury, In this analysis, abdominal muscle and abdominal pressure, which were not included in the previous study, were added to identify those effects in spine stability during upright stance posture for the case where the intervertebral disc plays the role of mechanoreceptor, The musculoskeletal FE model was consisted with detailed whole lumbar spine, pelvis, sacrum, coccyx and simplified trunk model. Muscle architecture with 46 local muscles containing paraspinal muscle and 6 rectus abdominal muscles were assigned according to the acting directions. The magnitude of 4kPa was considered for abdominal pressure. Minimization of the nucleus pressure deviation and annulus fiber average tension stress deviation was chosen for cost function. Developed model provide nice coincidence with in-vivo measurement (nucleus pressure). Analysis was conducted according to existence of co-activation of abdominal muscle and abdominal pressure. Antagonistic activity of abdominal muscle produced stability of spinal column with relatively small amount of total muscle force. In contrast to the abdominal muscle, effect of abdominal pressure was not clear that was partly depending on the assumption of constant abdominal pressure.

  • In order to investigate the effect of intracellular cyclic GMP on the calcium channel, whole cell patch clamp technique with internal perfusion method was used in the single ventricular myocytes of the rabbit. Cyclic GMP, cGMP analogues, cAMP, isopernaline and forskolin were perfused into cells and their effects on the calcium current were analysed by applying depolarizing step pulse of 10 mV in amplitude for 200 msec from holding potential of -40 mV. Calcium currents usually activated from -30 mV and then reached a peak at +10 mV. Amplitude of the calcium current was standardized with membrane capacitance, 50 pF. Peak amplitude at +10 mV in control was -0.15 nA/50pF. When 100 mM cAMP was applied from the pipette, peak amplitude of calcium current increased to -0.32 nA and addition of 1 mM isoprenaline further increased its amplitude. In the presence of cGMP it alone also produced an increase of the calcium current to -0.52 nA/50pF and addition of isoprenaline or forskolin increased its magnitude to -[0.55~0.95] nA/50pF. Simultaneous application of cGMP and cAMP increased the calcium current to -0.67 nA/50pF. Among the cGMP analogues, 8-Br-cGMP was the most potent stimulant for the calcium current activation. From the above results it could be concluded tlat cGMP increases the calcium current not through cAMP dependent protein kinase nor cAMP dependent phosphodiesterase pathway, but through independent phosphorylation pathway, possibly cGMP dependent protein kinase pathway.

  • This work focuses on the electrical conduction mechanism in a lead free ($Na_{0.5}K_{0.5}NbO_3$ ; NKN) ceramics system with $LiNbO_3$ content of approximately critical concentration $x{\geq}0.2$. Lead free $(1-x)(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3-x(LiNbO_3)$, $NKN-LN_x$ (x = 0.1, 0.2) ceramics were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. Crystal structures are confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The electric-mechanical bond coefficient $k_p$ decreases and the phase transition temperature $T_c$ increases with increasing x content, as determined by dielectric and piezoelectric measurements. The value of the real dielectric constants ${\varepsilon}^{\prime}$ and $k_BT{\varepsilon}^{\prime\prime}$ showed anomalies around $T_c$ ($462^{\circ}C$ in the NKN-LN0.1 and $500^{\circ}C$ in the NKN-LN0.2). For the ionic conduction of mobile ions, the activation energies are obtained as $E_I=1.76eV$ (NKN-LN0.1) and $E_I=1.55eV$ (NKN-LN0.2), above $T_c$, and $E_{II}=0.78$ (NKNL-N0.1) and $E_{II}=0.81$ (NKN-LN0.2) below $T_c$. It is believed that the conduction mechanisms of NKN-LNx ceramics are related to ionic hopping conduction, which may arise mainly due to the jumping of $Li^+$ ions.

  • In this study, terpolymer of vinylidene fluoride (VDF), trifluoroethylene (TrFE), and chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) were prepared by suspension polymerization using di-tertiary-butyl peroxide (DTBP) as an initiator. The structural characteristics including microstructure and chain conformation of the polymers have been carefully elucidated as a function of the chemical composition using NMR, FT-IR. The intensity of absorption bands of the $\beta$-phase gradually decreases and the $\gamma$-phase increases with the increment of CTFE mol%. The analysis results of DSC shows that the Curie phase transition temperature ($T_c$) of the terpolymer gradually shifts to ambient temperature and trace becomes smaller and broader with the increment of CTFE mol%. Also, activation energies of the samples were calculated by Freeman-Carroll method.

  • Inorganic micropowder(Ce500)-filled polyurethane composite foams were fabricated and the effects of postcure on the mechanical properties were studied by the measurement of polymerization temperature, TGA, and UTM test. Temperature for the maximum reaction rate of 20wt% Ce500-filled sample reached upto ca. $100^{\circ}$ within 10min. and, for the same sample, double mode thermal decomposition was observed around two distinguished temperatures of $250^{\circ}$ and $350^{\circ}C$. The activation energies for the decomposition were calculated using Kissinger method as 117.4 and 139.4 kJ/mol, respectively. While break strength and hardness of the sample seemed nearly affected by postcure time at $160^{\circ}C$, elongation, however, was significantly changed upto 1.72 times after 7hrs treatment. As the results, the condition of 7hrs at $160^{\circ}$ was considered as the optimum postcure condition for the Ce500-filled PU composite foam samples.
