A series of activated carbons were prepared from coconut shells and coal-tar pitch binder by physical activation with steam in this study. The effect of variable processes such as activation temperature, activation time and ratio of mixing was investigated for optimizing those preparation parameters. The activation processes were carried out continuously. The nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K on pellet-shaped activated carbons show the same trend of Type I by IUPAC classification. The average pore sizes were about 19-21${\AA}$. The specific surface areas ($S_{BET}$) of pellet typed ACs increased with increasing the activation temperature and time. Specific surface area of AC treated for 90 min at temperature $900^{\circ}C$ was 1082 $m^2/g$. The methylene blue numbers continuously increased with increasing the activation temperature and time. On the other hand, iodine numbers highly increased till activation time of 60 min, but the rate of increase of iodine numbers decreased after that time. This indicates that new micropores were created and the existing micropores turned into mesopores and macropores because of increased reactivity of carbon surface and $H_2O$.
Sisal fiber, an agricultural resource abundantly available in china, has been used as raw material to prepare activated carbon with high surface area and huge pore volume by chemical activation with zinc chloride. The orthogonal test was designed to investigate the influence of zinc chloride concentration, impregnation ratio, activation temperature and activation time on preparation of activated carbon. Scanning electron micrograph, Thermo-gravimetric, $N_2$-adsorption isotherm, mathematical models such as t-plot, H-K equation, D-R equation and BJH methods were used to characterize the properties of the prepared carbons and the activation mechanism was discussed. The results showed that $ZnCl_2$ changed the pyrolysis process of sisal fiber. Characteristics of activated carbon are: BET surface area was $1628m^2/g$, total pore volume was $1.316m^3/g$ and ratio of mesopore volume to total pore volume up to 94.3%. These results suggest that sisal fiber is an attractive source to prepare mesoporous high-capacity activated carbon by chemical activation with zinc chloride.
In polymer precursor based activated carbon, the structure of starting material is likely to have profound effect on the surface properties of end product. To investigate this aspect phenolic resins of different types were prepared using phenol, mcresol and formaldehyde as reactants and $Et_3N$ and $NH_4OH$ as catalyst. Out of these resins two resol resins PFR1 and CFR1 (prepared in excess of formaldehyde using $Et_3N$ as catalyst in the basic pH range) were used as raw materials for the preparation of activated carbons by both chemical and physical activation methods. In chemical activation process both the resins gave activated carbons with high surface areas i.e. 2384 and 2895 $m^2/g$, but pore size distribution in PFR1 resin calculated from Horvath-Kawazoe method, contributes mainly in micropore range i.e. 84.1~88.7 volume percent of pores was covered by micropores. Whereas CFR1 resin when activated with KOH for 2h time, a considerable amount (32.8%) of mesopores was introduced in activated carbon prepared. Physical activation with $CO_2$ leads to the formation of activated carbon with a wide range of surface area (503~1119 $m^2/g$) with both of these resins. The maximum pore volume percentage was obtained in 3-20 ${\AA}$ region by physical activation method.
Plants have been shown to contains $Ca^{2+}$/calmodulin-stimulated GAD and NAD kinase. To test how calmodulin and calmodulin methylation affect the activation of GAD and NAD kinase, GAD and NAD kinase were partially purified from tobacco plants. GAD was also partially purified from E. coli transformed with a plasmid carrying a cloned tobacco GAD gene. We find that GAD from the transformed E. coli showed 60-fold $Ca^{2+}$/calmodulin-dependent activation. However, GAD from tobacco plants was stimulated only about 3.8-fold by the addition of calmodulin in the presence of calcium, suggesting high background activity of the enzyme was possibly due to bound endogenous tobacco calmodulin. There were no significant differences in the tobacco GAD activator properties between calmodulins. A monoclonal antibody against petunia GAD interacted strongly with both GAD from tobacco plants and GAD from cloned gene. NAD kinase from tobacco plants showed a complete $Ca^{2+}$/calmodulin dependency for activity. Unmethylated calmodulins activated GAD in a manner similar to methylated calmodulin. However, the maximum level of NAD kinase activation obtained with unmethylated calmodulins is approximately 4-fold higher than methylated calmodutins. These data suggested that endogenous tobacco calmodulin may interact more tightly with GAD than NAD kinase and that calmodulin methylation affects the activator properties of calmodulins for tobacco NAD kinase but not for GAD.
Here, we introduce porous graphene balls (PGB) showing superior electrochemical properties as supercapacitor electrode materials. PGB was fabricated via activation of graphene oxides (GO) by H2O2 and aerosol spray drying in series. Effect of activation on the morphology, specific surface area, pore volume, and electrochemical properties were investigated. As-prepared PGB showed spherical morphology containing pores, which lead to the effective prevention of restacking in graphene sheets. It also exhibited a large surface area, unique porous structures, and high electrical conductivity. The electrochemical properties of the PGB as electrode materials of supercapacitor are investigated by using aqueous KOH under symmetric two-electrode system. The highest specific capacitance of PGB was 279 F/g at 0.1 A/g. In addition, the high rate capability (93.8% retention) and long-term cycling stability (92.2%) of the PGB were found due to the facilitated ion mobility between the porous graphene layers.
Previous studies showed that Cdc7 kinase of Schizosaccharomyces pombe phosphorylated the minichromosome maintenance (Mcm) complex efficiently in the presence of spMcm10 protein. The biochemical properties of the phosphorylated Mcm complexes were examined to understand the activation mechanism of the Mcm complex by Cdc7 kinase. The phosphorylation of Mcm complex in the presence of spMcm10 by Cdc7 kinase did not affect the stability of the Mcm complex containing all six subunits, and the changes in the sedimentation properties were not observed after the phosphorylation. The reconstitution of the Mcm complex using the purified proteins showed that the phosphorylation of Mcm2 proteins did not affect the interactions between Mcm proteins. The phosphorylation of the Mcm2-7 complex at the same condition also did not activate the other biochemical activities such as DNA helicase and single stranded (ss) DNA binding activities. On the other hand, spMcm10 protein that was used for the stimulation of Mcm phosphorylation showed single stranded DNA binding activity, and inhibited the DNA helicase activity of the Mcm4/6/7 complex. These inhibitory effects were reduced by the addition of Cdc7 kinase, suggesting that the phosphorylation by Cdc7 kinase decreased the interactions between spMcm10 and the Mcm complex. Taken together, these results suggested that the phosphorylation by Cdc7 kinase alone is not sufficient for the remodeling and the activation of the Mcm complex, and the additional factors or the phosphorylations might be required for the activation of the Mcm complex.

The objective of this research is to improve adsorption efficiency of adsorbent made from MSWI (Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator) ny ash by $HNO_3$ activation. The acidity and the basicity were determined by Boehm's method and the surface structure was studied by BET method with N2 adsorption. The adsorption properties were investigated with benzene and MEK (Methylethylketone). $HNO_3$ activation can modify the surface property of an adsorbent such as specific surface area, pore volume, and functional group. According to the results, the specific surface area of the adsorbent was increased from $309.2m^2/g\;to\;553.2 m^2/g$ by activation. Also oxygen-containing functional groups were formed on it.
This work focused on the study of thermal properties and kinetic behavior of LDPE-nanoclay composite films. The effect of nanoclay content (0.5, 1, 3, and 5 wt%) on thermal stability and crystallization characteristics of the nanocomposites were investigated by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The results from endothermic curve showed that the nanoclay played an important role in the crystallization of nanocomposites by acting as nucleating agent. From exothermic curve, there was a crystallization temperature shift which was attributed to crystallization process induced by nanoclay. The TGA results showed that the addition of nanoclay significantly increased the thermal stability of LDPE matrix, which was likely due to the characteristic of layered silicates/clays dispersed in LDPE matrix as well as the formation of multilayered carbonaceous-silicate char. A well-known Coats-Redfern method was used to evaluate the decomposition activation energy of nanocomposite. It was demonstrated that introducing of nanoclay to LDPE matrix escalated the activation energy of nanocomposite decomposition resulting in thermal stability improvement.
This study was conducted to determine the rheological properties of gochujang and chogochujang at different temperatures (25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$). Rheological properties of the samples were determined using a rotational rheometer at a shear range of 1 to $40s^{-1}$. Gochujang and chogochujang were found to be non-Newtonian fluids according to the Herschel-Bulkley model. Yield stress and consistency coefficient of gochujang at different temperatures were higher than those of chogochujang, whereas the opposite was observed for flow behavior index. Moreover, all rheological properties of gochujang and chogochujang decreased with increasing temperature. The consistency coefficient was related to temperature using an Arrhenius-type relationship. Gochujang (14.48 kJ/mol) had slightly higher activation energy than chogochujang (14.03 kJ/mol).
Using a cation exchange resin of polystyrene-DVB copolymer as a carbon source for the production of activated carbon, the effects of operating parameters on the physical properties of activated carbon such as specific surface area and specific pore volume were experimentally studied. In carbonization process specific surface area and specific pore volume of carbonized product decreased with the increase of carbonization temperature and time. They were proportional to activation temperature and time up to the specific temperature and time in activation process. In carbonization process the increase of heating rate gave negative effect to the properties. The properties of activated product, on the contrary, increased with the heating rate in carbonization process. The properties of activated carbon manufactured with the resin exchanged with divalent cations were lower than those with raw resin.
