Objective: This study aimed to investigate effective cueing methods for selective muscle activation of gluteus medius muscles. Design: Cross sectional study design. Methods: Using the inclusion criteria for this study, 20 healthy adults, both males and females were selected for the measurement of muscle activation of gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and tensor fascia latae muscles while performing clamshell exercise, basic movements in leg raise in side-lying, and 3 different cueing methods. Electromyogram was used to measure muscle activation, and both muscle activation and muscle ratio were compared during the basic movements and different cueing methods. Results: Gluteus medius activation was highest using "try not to make your body rotate" (cueing method 2) in both clamshell exercise and leg raise side-lying (F=5.533, p<0.05, F=7.771, p<0.05), and muscle ratio was highest in clamshell exercise using cueing method 2 (p<0.05) and "don't move your tensor fascia late" (cueing method 1) in leg raise side-lying (p<0.05). This study showed that cueing method 1 in leg raise side-lying and cueing method 2 in clamshell exercise were the most effective cueing methods for selective muscle activation of gluteus medius muscle. Conclusions: The results of this study may be used as basic information for future studies on muscle activation and muscle ratio for different cueing methods and different muscles in various exercises.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate effective cueing methods for selective muscle activation of the serratus anterior. Methods: Based on the inclusion criteria, 26 healthy adults, both males and females, were recruited for the measurement of muscle activation of the upper trapezius and serratus anterior muscles while performing basic movements in knee push-up plus (KPP) and dynamic hug (DH) positions using five different cueing methods. An electromyogram was used to measure muscle activation, and both muscle activation and muscle ratio (serratus anterior/upper trapezius) were compared during the basic movements and different cueing methods. The cueing methods were trapezius verbal cueing, trapezius verbal cueing + trapezius tactile cueing, emphasis verbal cueing, serratus anterior tactile cueing, and trapezius verbal cueing + trapezius tactile cueing + serratus anterior tactile cueing. Results: The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference in the muscles for the two exercises (p < 0.05). There was also a significant difference between the cueing methods (p < 0.05). The correlative effect between the muscles and cueing methods was also significant (p < 0.05). The muscle ratio in trapezius verbal cueing + trapezius tactile cueing + serratus anterior tactile cueing during KPP and DH was higher than in basic movements and other cueing methods. This confirms that trapezius verbal cueing + trapezius tactile cueing + serratus anterior tactile cueing is an effective cueing method for selective activation of the serratus anterior during KPP and DH. This study also demonstrated that cueing by a therapist may both increase and decrease selective muscle activation. Conclusion: Through this study, an effective cueing method to selectively activate the serratus anterior may be suggested, and the results of this study may provide basic information regarding future studies and clinical practice.

Immunologists have activated T cells in vitro using various stimulation methods, including phorbol myristate acetate (PMA)/ionomycin and αCD3/αCD28 agonistic antibodies. PMA stimulates protein kinase C, activating nuclear factor-κB, and ionomycin increases intracellular calcium levels, resulting in activation of nuclear factor of activated T cell. In contrast, αCD3/αCD28 agonistic antibodies activate T cells through ZAP-70, which phosphorylates linker for activation of T cell and SH2-domain-containing leukocyte protein of 76 kD. However, despite the use of these two different in vitro T cell activation methods for decades, the differential effects of chemical-based and antibody-based activation of primary human T cells have not yet been comprehensively described. Using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies to analyze gene expression unbiasedly at the single-cell level, we compared the transcriptomic profiles of the non-physiological and physiological activation methods on human peripheral blood mononuclear cell-derived T cells from four independent donors. Remarkable transcriptomic differences in the expression of cytokines and their respective receptors were identified. We also identified activated CD4 T cell subsets (CD55+) enriched specifically by PMA/ionomycin activation. We believe this activated human T cell transcriptome atlas derived from two different activation methods will enhance our understanding, highlight the optimal use of these two in vitro T cell activation assays, and be applied as a reference standard when analyzing activated specific disease-originated T cells through scRNA-seq.
Activation energies for plastic deformation calculated from traditional phenomenological equations have been criticized frequently since the values are different by authors, and also by experimental conditions. The reasons of different activation enthalpies are clarified in this study. Our method for calculating activation enthalpies based on the authors' theory of plastic deformation was presented and discussed. The method was applied to various cases of alloys, the calculated activation enthalpies are listed and compared with the activation energies obtained by the traditional methods in order to show the reasonableness of our method. The physical meaning of the activation enthalpies which we found was clarified.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive regression method based on the single-layer neural network structure. We adopt a symmetric activation function as units of the structure. The activation function has a flexibility of its form with a parametrization and has a localizing property that is useful to improve the quality of estimation. In order to provide a spatially adaptive estimator, we regularize coefficients of the activation functions via ℓ1-penalization, through which the activation functions to be regarded as unnecessary are removed. In implementation, an efficient coordinate descent algorithm is applied for the proposed estimator. To obtain the stable results of estimation, we present an initialization scheme suited for our structure. Model selection procedure based on the Akaike information criterion is described. The simulation results show that the proposed estimator performs favorably in relation to existing methods and recovers the local structure of the underlying function based on the sample.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of isokinetic eccentric training (IET) on lower extremity muscle activation and walking velocity according to slow velocity and fast velocity of isokinetic eccentric training in stroke patients. Methods: Thirty subjects were randomly divided into three groups: experimental group I (n=10), group II (n=10), and control group III (n=10). Each group was provided intervention under three conditions, as follows: isokinetic eccentric training + slow velocity (group I), isokinetic eccentric training + fast velocity (group II), and sit to stand training (group III). The training program was conducted for eight weeks (five times per week; 30 minutes per day). Subjects were measured on lower extremity muscle (vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, gastrocnemius) activation and walking velocity. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were performed for comparison of lower extremity muscle activation and walking velocity between different intervention methods. Results: Significant difference in lower extremity muscle activation and walking velocity was observed in experimental group I and group II compared with the control group III (p<0.01). Results of post-hoc analysis showed a significant in lower extremity muscle activation and walking velocity in group I compared with group II and group III. Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest that slow velocity and fast velocity using isokinetic eccentric training may have a beneficial effect on improvement of lower extremity muscle activation and walking velocity in stroke patients.

This study compares two different methods of measuring brain-BOLD activation. By comparing two different methods of measurement i.e., one method calculating the neural activation area (the number of activated voxels), while the other measured the neural activation intensity (the mean intensity of selected activated yokels), this study identified the more precise method of measuring brain activation which results from the completion of a visuospatial task. 16 right-handed male college students (mean age 23.2 years) participated in this study as subjects. Functional brain images were scanned on them using a 3T MRI single-shot EPI method. No correlation was found between the levels of cognitive performance and number of activated yokels in the activated brain areas. However, a significant correlation was found between the levels of cognitive performance and the mean intensity of selected activated yokels in the parietal, frontal, and other areas. In conclusion, the method of mean intensity was considered a better index of brain activity rather than the activated yokels measurement method.

PURPOSE: This study was to determine the changes of abdominal muscles activation according to the heel contact methods of stair ascent in healthy young adults. METHODS: 33 healthy young subjects (mean age: $26.37{\pm}9.72$ years, age range: 20-32 years) volunteered under two conditions. They were performed stair ascent with heel contact and without heel contact. The effects of heel contact methods were assessed using the surface electromyography (sEMG) analysis during stair ascent for activation of abdominal muscles (internal oblique; IO, transverse abdominis; TrA, external oblique; EO rectus abdominis; RA). The interventions were conducted over three trials in each method, and measurements were performed on each subject by one examiner in three trials. RESULTS: Our results revealed that there were significantly greater increase in the EMG activation of IO and TrA muscles in the performance of stair ascent with heel contact (p<.05) compared to those of stair ascent without heel contact. The results also showed that there were greater decrease in the ratio of abdominal muscle activation in those of stair ascent with heel contact compared with stair ascent without heel contact. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrated that the method of stair ascent with heel contact would suggest positive evidence for improving activation of abdominal muscles.

Many administrative policies for regional activation have progressed the expansion and improvement of convenience institutions. Most appraisals about rural community influenced by urban life convenience are affirmative, but chasing urban life convenience is a cause of breaking out regional identity. Recently, new rising methods of theme and characteristic to imply regional identity, are ways of regional activation through neighboring network around satellite of rural community. In this study, I research and suggest applicable possible proposal of rural communities in Korea. by survey of neighboring network methods of Asan Live Museum in Japan applied ecomuseum concept for regional activation.

Three activation methods (constant voltage, current cycling, and hydrogen pumping) were applied to investigate the effects on the performance of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) loaded with PtCo/C catalyst. The current cycling protocol took the shortest time to activate the MEA, while the performance after activation was the worst among the all activation methods. The constant voltage method took a moderate activation time and exhibited the best performance after activation. The hydrogen pumping protocol took the longest time to activate the MEA with moderate performance after activation. According to the distribution of relaxation time analysis, the improved performance after the activation mainly comes from the decrease of charge transfer resistance rather than the ionic resistance in the cathode catalyst layer, which suggests that the existence of water on the electrode is the key factor for activation.
