  • Along with the development of information and communication technology, smart education that can learn without restrictions of time, place and equipment is activated even in the field of education. Although smart education is provided with content-based training solutions, construction of a system that grasps individual characteristics of learners and provides personalized learning is relatively weak. The activity of free choice is an important play activity of early childhood education, but it is not implemented efficiently by relying on the clinical observation of the teacher. If the IoT(Internet of Things) technology based on Hyper-Connected is applied to free-choice activities, it is possible to provide the child's personalized activity type and play-form analysis based on objective and stylized data. In this paper, we design and implement a system to monitor the child's activity of free choice by building an IoT environment that is based on open source hardware. The proposed system provides children's activity information as objective data and will be used as teacher's work mitigation and custom training material for each child.

  • A chemical and biological permeable barrier with economic feasibility is suggested to treat landfill leachate in this study. The proposed composite layers consist of bentonite, and polyurethane (PU) foam that is mixed with powdered activated carbon (PAC) and inoculated with microorganisms from local wastewater treatment plant. Each layer is mixed with local sand, and yellow brown soil. Batch tests were conducted to investigate the sorptions of nitrate on the PU foam and PAC, and nitrification/denitrification rate of each layer material. Nitrification occurred in 30 minutes with initial ammonia concentration of 100 mg/L, and the concentration of nitrate attached in the PU foam increased after 270 minutes. Results of denitrification batch tests showed 76.6%, 87.3% and 88% of nitrate removal efficiency at 10%, 20% and 30% of the volume ratio of PU foam, respectively. The pH increased from 7 to 9.42, and alkalinity increased from 980 mg/L to 1720 mg/L during the denitrification batch tests. In the column experiments using the proposed composite layers with 20% of the volume ratio of the PU foam, about 96% of BOD, 63% of COD, 58.1~79.5% of total nitrogen were removed.

  • A recently developed propellant, ammonium dinitramide (ADN, $NH_4N(NO_2)_2$ is stable and safe at an ambient condition. However, it requires high purity for practical applications. A very little quantity of foreign impurities in ADN may cause clogging of thruster nozzles and catalyst poisoning for the use of a liquid propellant. Thus, several purification processes for precipitated ADN particles such as repetition extraction, activated carbon adsorption and low-temperature extraction were presented in this study. The purifying methods helped to improve the chemical purity as evaluated by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy in addition to ion chromatography (IC) analyses. Among the purification processes, adsorption was found to be the best, showing a final purity of 99.8% based on relative quantification by IC. Thermal analysis revealed an exothermic temperature of $148^{\circ}C$ for the synthesized liquid monopropellant, but rose to $188^{\circ}C$ when urea was added.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of types of synthetic fibers on mechanical properties of alkali-activated slag composite. Materials and mixture proportion for matrix are determined, and the compressive strength, tensile performance, and cracking patterns of three composites reinforced by polypropylene, polyvinyl-alcohol, and polyethylene fibers. From the test results, it was observed that polyvinyl-alcohol fiber-reinforced composite and polyethylene fiber-reinforced composite had similar tensile performance. On the other hand, polypropylene fiber-reinforced composite showed low tensile performance. And it was exhibited that other factors except tensile strength and aspect ratio of fiber influence significantly tensile behavior of composite.

  • As rechargeable metal-air batteries will be ideal energy storage devices in the future, an active cathode electrocatalyst is required with bi-functionality on both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during discharge and charge, respectively. Here, a class of perovskite cathode catalyst with a micro-tubular structure has been developed by controlling bi-functionality from different Ru and Ni dopant ratios. A micro-tubular structure is achieved by the activated carbon fiber (ACF) templating method, which provides uniform size and shape. At the perovskite formula of $LaCrO_3$, the dual dopant system is successfully synthesized with a perfect incorporation into the single perovskite structure. The chemical oxidation states for each Ni and Ru also confirm the partial substitution to B-site of Cr without any changes in the major perovskite structure. From the electrochemical measurements, the micro-tubular feature reveals much more efficient catalytic activity on ORR and OER, comparing to the grain catalyst with same perovskite composition. By changing the Ru and Ni ratio, the $LaCr_{0.8}Ru_{0.1}Ni_{0.1}O_3$ micro-tubular catalyst exhibits great bi-functionality, especially on ORR, with low metal loading, which is comparable to the commercial catalyst of Pt and Ir. This advanced catalytic property on the micro-tubular structure and Ru/Ni synergy effect at the perovskite material may provide a new direction for the next-generation cathode catalyst in metal-air battery system.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated differences in bone healing and remodeling among 3 implants with different surfaces: sandblasting and large-grit acid etching (SLA; IS-III $Active^{(R)}$), SLA with hydroxyapatite nanocoating (IS-III $Bioactive^{(R)}$), and SLA stored in sodium chloride solution ($SLActive^{(R)}$). Methods: The mandibular second, third, and fourth premolars of 9 dogs were extracted. After 4 weeks, 9 dogs with edentulous alveolar ridges underwent surgical placement of 3 implants bilaterally and were allowed to heal for 2, 4, or 12 weeks. Histologic and histomorphometric analyses were performed on 54 stained slides based on the following parameters: vertical marginal bone loss at the buccal and lingual aspects of the implant (b-MBL and l-MBL, respectively), mineralized bone-to-implant contact (mBIC), osteoid-to-implant contact (OIC), total bone-to-implant contact (tBIC), mineralized bone area fraction occupied (mBAFO), osteoid area fraction occupied (OAFO), and total bone area fraction occupied (tBAFO) in the threads of the region of interest. Two-way analysis of variance (3 types of implant $surface{\times}3$ healing time periods) and additional analyses for simple effects were performed. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed across the implant surfaces for OIC, mBIC, tBIC, OAFO, and tBAFO. Statistically significant differences were observed over time for l-MBL, mBIC, tBIC, mBAFO, and tBAFO. In addition, an interaction effect between the implant surface and the healing time period was observed for mBIC, tBIC, and mBAFO. Conclusions: Our results suggest that implant surface wettability facilitates bone healing dynamics, which could be attributed to the improvement of early osseointegration. In addition, osteoblasts might become more activated with the use of HA-coated surface implants than with hydrophobic surface implants in the remodeling phase.

  • The analysis of 41Ca in concrete generated from the nuclear facilities decommissioning is critical for ensuring the safe management of radioactive waste. An analytical method for the determination of 41Ca in concrete is described. 41Ca is a neutron-activated long radionuclide, and hence, for accurate analysis, it is necessary to completely extract Ca from the concrete sample where it exists as the predominant element. The decomposition methods employed were the acid leaching, microwave digestion, and alkali fusion. A comparison of the results indicated that the alkali fusion is the most suitable way for the separation of Ca from the concrete sample. Several processes of hydroxide and carbonate precipitation were employed to separate 41Ca from interferences. The method relies on the differences in the solubility of the generated products. The behavior of Ca and the interfering elements such as Fe, Ni, Co, Eu, Ba, and Sr is examined at each separation step. The purified 41Ca was measured by a liquid scintillation counter, and the quench curve and counting efficiency were determined by using a certified reference material of known 41Ca activity. The recoveries in this study ranged from 56 to 68%, and the minimum detectable activity was 50 mBq g-1 with 0.5 g of concrete sample.

  • This study aims to reduce the rancid odor generated during the fermentation process of kimchi by inserting zinc oxide (ZnO) into an inorganic porous material with a high surface area to decompose or adsorb the fermentation odor. ZnO activated by the presence of moisture exhibits decomposition of rancid odors. Mixed with Titanium dioxide (TiO2), a photocatalyst. To manufacture the packaging liner used in this study, NaOH, ZnCl2, and TiO2 powder were placed in a tank with diatomite and water. The sludge obtained via a hydrothermal ultrasonication synthesis was sintered in an oven. After being pin-milled and melt-blended, the powders were mixed with linear low-density polyethylene (L-LDPE) to make a masterbatch (M/B), which was further used to manufacture liners. A gas detector (GasTiger 2000) was used to investigate the total amount of sulfur compounds during fermentation and determine the reduction rate of the odor-causing compounds. The packaging liner cross-section and surface were investigated using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS) to observe the adsorption of sulfur compounds. A variety of sulfur compounds associated with the perceived unpleasant odor of kimchi were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). For the analyses, kimchi was homogenized at room temperature and divided into several sample dishes. The performance of the liner was evaluated by comparing the total area of the GC-MS signals of major off-flavor sulfur compounds during the five days of fermentation at 20℃. As a result, Nano-grade inorganic compound liners reduced the sulfur content by 67 % on average, compared to ordinary polyethylene (PE) foam liners. Afterwards SEM-EDS was used to analyze the sulfur content adsorbed by the liners. The findings of this study strongly suggest that decomposition and adsorption of the odor-generating compounds occur more effectively in the newly-developed inorganic nanocomposite liners.

  • This study investigated and analyzed the Korean and international status of radioactive waste management for medical linear accelerators (linacs) and proceed prior research to suggest radiation safety regulations and guidelines for the safe use of radiation. We analyzed the number of linacs installed in the radiation oncology departments of 103 institutions. In addition, we analyzed the procedures and standards for disposal in Korea and foreign countries. For foreign countries, we analyzed the status based on reports from the United States, Japan, Europe, and Canada. A total of 182 linacs are installed in Korea and 95% of them use more than 10 MV of energy. In Korea, standards for managing radioactive waste from a linac, disposal procedures, and clearance criteria have yet to be established. Therefore, radioactive waste is disposed of in different ways depending on the hospitals where they originate. Japan, the US, and Canada have recommended clearance levels and procedures for linacs. Other countries have provided management guidelines for research or large-scale accelerators, but not for medical purposes. In this study, we investigated the management of radioactive waste from medical linacs in Korea and abroad. Several foreign countries have suggested a clearance level and criteria for disposing of waste storage drums. For the safe management of medical linacs, it is necessary to establish safety management regulations. In Korea, standards for disposal, such as radiation or dose limits, are required for medical linacs. A system for clearance when disposing at a medical institution should be created.
