  • In this study, a pyrosequencing was performed and analyzed to verify the phylogenetic diversity of actinomycetes in the bamboo (Sasa borealis) soil as a base study to obtain the genetic resources of actinomycetes. It was found that the rhizosphere soil had much various distribution in bacterial communities showing a diversity of 8.15 with 2,868 OTUs, while the litter layer showed a diversity of 7.55 with 2,588 OTUs. The bacterial community in the bamboo soil was composed of 35 phyla and the predominant phyla were Proteobacteria (51-60%), Bacteroidetes (16-20%), Acidobacteria (4-16%) and Actinobacteria (4-14%). In particular, Actinobacteria including Micromonosporaceae and Streptomycetaceae had a diverse distribution of actinomycetes within the six orders, 35 families and 121 genera, and it was characterized that about 83% of actinomycetes within Actinomycetales belonged to the 28 families. Among the dominant actinobacterial populations, Micromonosporaceae, Pseudonocardiaceae and Streptomycetaceae were representative family groups in the bamboo soils.

  • To investigate the variations of physico-chemical factors in four stations (Hanlim, Aewol, Sinchon, Hamdeok) at Jeju coastal area, Water temperature, Salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solid (SS), ammonia-nitrogen ($NH_4-N$), nitrite-nitrogen ($NO_3-N$), nitrate-nitrogen ($NO_2-N$) were analysed. The ranges of water temperature were from 26.23 to $28.6^{\circ}C$, the salinity were from 31.4 to 32.88‰, the pH were from 8.15 to 8.35, the chemical oxygen were from 0.48 to 0.91 mg $L^{-1}$. A total of 52 strains of marine actinomycetes was isolated from Jeju Island coastal area. They were characterized by determining morphological and physio-biochemical properties, the API kit and confirmed by molecular methods including partial sequencing of 16S rRNA. A neighbor-joining tree of partial 16S rRNA sequences divided the 52 isolates in 2 major groups, 22 strains of Gram positive bacteria/Actinobacteria (division)/Actinomycetales (order)/Streptomycineae (suborder)/Streptomycetaceae (family)/Streptomyces (93.1%) and 2 strains of Streptospotangineae (suborder)/Nocardiopsaceae (family)/Nocardiopsis (6.9%).

  • As a subset study for the collection of Korean indigenous prokaryotic species, 62 bacterial strains belonging to the phylum Actinobacteria were isolated from various sources. Each strain showed higher 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.75%) and formed a robust phylogenetic clade with closest species of the phylum Actinobacteria which were defined with valid names, already. There is no official description on these 62 actinobacterial species in Korea. Consequently, unrecorded 62 species of 25 genera in the 14 families belonging to the order Actinomycetales of the phylum Actinobacteria were found in Korea. Morphological properties, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source and strain IDs are described in the species descriptions.

  • As a subset work for the collection of indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, 38 actinobacterial strains were isolated from various environmental samples obtained from plant root, ginseng cultivating soil, mud flat, freshwater and seawater. Each strain showed higher 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>99.1%) and formed a robust phylogenetic clade with closest actinobacterial species which were defined and validated with nomenclature, already. There is no official description on these 38 actinobacterial species in Korea. Consequently, unrecorded 37 species of 24 genera in the 12 families belonging to the order Actinomycetales of the phylum Actinobacteria were found in Korea. Morphological properties, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source and strain IDs are described in the species descriptions.

  • A heterotrophic nitrifying bacterium was isolated from the compost and analyzed for its characteristics. This bacterium was found to be a Gram positive rod, catalase positive, and motile. Nitrite production was detected on the ammonium acetate medium through the violet color formation. BBL test showed that this strain has high homology with Bacillus strains. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rDNA revealed that the bacterium has 94% of similarity with Mycobacterium smegmatis strain.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effects of probiotics as manure additives on pathogen, mineral, carbon dioxide and methane emissions in pig slurry as a function of time and provide information about the importance of pig slurry management to pig producers. An experiment was a completely randomized design and four treatments: CON: no treatment (5 kg pig slurry), T1: 5 kg pig slurry + 0.2% bacillus subtilis, T2: 5 kg pig slurry + 0.2% yeast, T3: 5 kg pig slurry + 0.2% actinomycetales. All treatments were replicated three times. The results information that is analyzed includes the following: First, in spite of the lack of statistically significant differences, pH values and carbon dioxide were lowered (P < 0.05) in all probiotic treatments compared with the controls as a function of time. Second, all probiotic treatments had no effect on Salmonella enterica, mineral, and methane emission. The results of this study indicated that addition of 0.2% probiotic to pig slurry resulted in lower pH and carbon dioxide emissions, and carbon dioxide and methane emitted from pig slurry is not listed as noxious gases.

  • Nocardiosis is an uncommon Gram-positive bacterial infection caused by aerobic actinomycetes in the genus Nocardia. Nocardia spp. have the ability to cause localized or systemic suppurative disease in humans and animals. Nocardiosis is typically regarded as an opportunistic infection, but approximately one-third of infected patients are immunocompetent. We report a rare case of pulmonary nocardiosis and a brain abscess caused by Nocardia asteroides in an elderly woman with a history of Crohn's disease. Radiographic imaging revealed a contrast-enhancing lesion with perilesional parenchymal edema that was preoperatively thought to be a neoplasm. The patient experienced aggressive disease progression simulating a metastatic brain tumor. Early diagnosis of norcadiosis, the absence of underlying disease, and the administration of appropriate antibiotics has a positive impact on prognosis. Familiarity with the magnetic resonance and computed tomography findings associated with CNS nocardiosis, such as those presented here, is essential for making an early diagnosis.

  • In 2005, a group of mycolic acid-containing bacteria was characterized as belonging to a novel genus, Segniliparus with species Segniliparus rugosus and S. rotundus. We report a case of the S. rugosus isolated from a 54-year-old woman with radiologic features mimicking that of non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis (NTM). When the patient first visited our hospital, an acid-fast bacteria (AFB) smear tested positive and Mycobacterium tuberculosis polymerase chain reaction (TB PCR) was negative in the bronchoalveolar lavage sample. After 2 months, the growing colonies were reported as NTM, but could not be identified because they had died. One year after the initial visit, induced sputum samples showed the same results, positive AFB smear and negative TB PCR. At this point, the growing colonies were identified as S. rugosus. Therefore, we should consider Segniliparus genus as a differential diagnosis for AFB in respiratory specimens in addition to the genus Mycobacterium.
