Polyester of linear homopolymer poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) was chemically modified through the formation of branched copolymer to improve the undesirable properties of fiber. Photo-induced graft copolymerization of the acrylic monomers acrylic acid (AA) and methyl acrylate (MA) in the liquid and vapor phase, respectively, onto N,N-dimetylformamide (DMF)-pretreated PET fibers was carried out. The effect of various synthesis conditions and DMF pretreatment of the PET on the graft yield was investigated. Grafting mechanism was analysed. The grafting was promoted by increasing DMF pretreatment temperature and amount of DMF retention in the fiber. The increasing biacetyl and monomer flow time, and irradiation time enhanced the grafting up to a certain amount and thereafter it decreased.

Various new active ester monomers based on (meth)acrylates and 4-vinylbenzoic acid have been prepared. Investigation of the controlled radical polymerization behavior of the respective monomers resulted in excellent polymerization control, thus, opening synthetic routes to reactive block copolymers. Polymer analogous reactions with amines yielded functional polymers. In the case of the copolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acetone oxime acrylate) a lower critical solution temperature could be measured at $52^{\circ}C$. Thus, the reactive copolymer features two characters: reactive AND stimuliresponsive behavior.

The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA) and acrylamide (AAm) onto oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fiber were successfully carried out in aqueous solution using $H_{2}O_{2}/Fe^{2+}$ as initiator. For all monomers the percentage of grafting increases with the amount of monomer and can be controlled by setting the appropriate reaction conditions. The optimum reaction period were found to be 120 minutes for all monomers whereas the optimum temperature and the amount of initiator needed for grafting depend on the type of the monomer used. The mechanisms of grafting vinyl monomer onto OPEFB were proposed. The grafted products were characterized by gravimetric analysis, FTIR and SEM.

The Chitin Thiocarbonate-Fe(II)-H2O2 redox initiator system was investigated for the graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile(AN) and acrylic acid(AA) monomers onto chitin powder. The reactions with vinyl monomers onto chitin were carried out under various the graft copolymerization conditions to elucidate the polymerization behavior in terms of graft yield. Reactions of chitin-acrylonitrile graft copolymer with hydroxyl amine hydrochloride and those with sodium hydroxide were conducted in order to obtain chitin-(amidoxime-co-acrylonitrile) and chitin-(acrylate-co-acrylamide) graft copolymers, respectively. The reaction efficiency was observed to depend on the alkali concentration, time, temperature, and the reactant concentrations. The prepared chitin derivatives were evaluated to find potential applications for use in wastewater treatments for adsorption and desorption of heavy metal ions as well as acidic and basic dyes.
Emulsion graft copolymerizations of vinyl monomers, butyl acrylate(BA), methyl methacrylate(MMA), 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA), methacrylonitrile(MAN), dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate(DAMA) or 2-vinyl pyridine(VP), onto carboxyl-terminated SBR latex were carried out under different experimental conditions. In case of synthesizing SBR-g-poly(butyl acrylate), the degree of grafting was increased with increasing the amount of emulsifier, polymerization temperature and the amount of initiator. Pull-out strength of resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex(RFL) adhesives formulated with modified latexes was very higher than that of RFL adhesive formulated with ungrafted latex. When the modified latexes with GMA, HEMA, MAN, DAMA or VP were used, the break occurred at cords. Peel strength of RFL adhesives formulated with SBR-g-poly(GMA), SBR-g-poly(HEMA) or SBR-g-poly(VP) was higher by about 1.3 times than that of RFL adhesives formulated with unmodified SBR against nylon cord and was higher by about 2.0 times against polyester cord.
Copolymers of phenyl alkyl acrylates/methacrylates are used clinically as soft materials for the foldable intraocular lens (IOL) to treat cataracts. In this study, copolymers of 2-phenylethyl acrylate (PEA) and 2-phenylethyl methacrylate (PEMA) of various compositions were prepared using free radical polymerization in solution. The composition of the copolymers was determined by $^1H$-NMR analysis. The reactivity ratios of the monomers were calculated using the conventional Fineman-Ross or Kelen-Tudos method. The reactivity ratio of PEA ($r_1$) and PEMA ($r_2$) were estimated to be 0.280 and 2.085 using the Kelen-Tudos method, respectively. These values suggest that PEMA is more reactive in copolymerization than PEA, and the copolymers will have a higher content of PEMA units. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the copolymers increased with increasing PEMA content. The molecular weight and polydispersity indices ($M_w/M_n$) of the polymers were determined by GPC. Overall, these results are expected to be quite useful in applications to foldable soft IOL materials.
