Room acoustic design of a concert hall with a reflection of listeners' preference (청취자 선호도를 반영한 콘서트홀 음향설계)

  • Various room acoustic parameters and their optimal values were proposed and verified as proper interpretations to the listeners' preference of concert hall sounds. However the listening environment has been changed since they were developed, and the listeners' preference may not be the same among countries of different cultural backgrounds. Actual listeners' preference should be applied to the design of a new concert hall. A survey on the listening preference was carried out for 22 music experts. A room acoustical design process was proposed which made the acoustical environment of a concert hall as close to the listeners' preferences.

Investigation of the Preferred Acoustic Characteristics in Concert Halls (콘서트 홀에서 선호되는 음향특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study deals with a subjective assessment to investigate the preferred acoustic conditions and determine the important acoustical parameters in concert halls. A subjective test was carried out using dummy head recorded sounds made in actual halls in Australia (referred to as Hall A and Hall B) to evaluate the acoustic performance of two halls. The results of subjective tests were then correlated with measured acoustical parameters to investigate the significant determinants for the preference judgements. The listeners show a stronger Preference for seats in the Hall B than those in the Hall A. The low preferences for seats in the Hall A are in agreement with live performance ratings assessed by musicians. It is found that the sound level is the most significant acoustical parameter for evaluating the overall acoustic preference in the two halls.

  • The theory of subjective preference with temporal and spatial factors which include sound signals arriving at both ears is described. Then, auditory evoked potentials which may relate to a primitive subjective response namely subjective preference are discussed. According to such fundamental phenomena, a workable model of human auditory-brain system is proposed. For eample, important subjective attributes, such as loudness, coloration, threshold of preception of a reflection and echo distrubance as well as subjective preference in relation to the initial time delay gap between the direct sound and the first reflection, and the subsequent reverberation time are well described by the autocorrelation function of source signals. Speech clarity, subjective diffuseness as well as subjective preference are related to the magnitude of inter-aural crosscorrelation function (IACC). Even the caktail party effects may be eplained by spatialization of human brain, i.e., independence of temporal and spatial factors.

Preference factors of stage acoustics for duet performers according to on-stage performance evaluation (무대 위 연주평가에 따른 듀엣 연주자의 무대음향 선호요인)

  • The purpose of this study is to derive the preference factors of stage acoustics for duet performers through the measurement of the stage acoustics in a concert hall and the performance evaluation on the stage. 15 pairs (total 30 players) of the performers participated in the experiment, and the preference of selected 5 locations were evaluated. As a result, the preference in the center of stage was the highest, and CS (Clarity at stage) and $ST_{Late}$ were the most significant factors for the preference.

Preferred Dealy Time and Subjective Preference Judgment for Sound Field with Single Reflection (일차 반사음으로 구성된 음장에서의 최적지연시간과 주관 Preference의 판단)

  • In order to know the preferred delay time of single reflection in relation in relation to the source signal, and to investigate whether or not there is any display in preference judgment of sound field between subjects of different nationalities, tests of subjective preference for musical sound fields with single reflection were preformed. The result showed that the preferred delay times agreed with the effective duration of auto-correlation function of the source signals, when the amplitude of reflection relative to the direct sound is 0dB. No fundamental disparity in series of judgement of sound field was found even for different series of Judgment with different music motifs. The result of preference test using different passages in single music showed that the fluctuation of the effective duration autocorrelation function over all the passages of the music was small. Thus, the preferred delay time can be determined by the coherence of autocorrelation function of the source signals and the amplitued of reflection.

Connection between Acoustical Parameters and Solo Performance on a Concert Hall Stage (콘서트홀 무대에서 음향지표와 독주 연주와의 상관관계)

  • This study investigated that the preference model of soloist performers for both vocal and instrumental types in terms of a stage support parameter, ST1. The test was carried out on a stage of a fan-shaped multi-purpose hall with orchestra shell. Objective measurements were carried out at 15 positions on the stage to evaluate various stage condition. The results showed that ST1 varies between -19.9 and -11.3 dB. Vocal and instrumental players participated in performance evaluation test as they played at 5 selected positions according to ST1 values. Players' preference was evaluated by 5-point rating and rank ordering method. As a result, it was found that the preference model of vocalist is different from that of instrumentalist. It was also found that the ST1 does not correlate well with the performer's preference.

Combined Effects of PMV and Acoustics on Indoor Environmental Perception (PMV와 음환경의 복합 작용이 실내 환경 지각에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purposes of this paper are to investigate effects of indoor thermal environment on acoustical perception and effects of acoustics on indoor thermal perception, and to understand basic human perception on indoor environment. Method: Subjective assessment was performed in an indoor environmental chamber with 24 university students. Thermal conditions with PMV -1.53, 0.03, 1.53, 1.83 were simulated with a VRF system, a humidifier, a dehumidifier, and a ventilation system. Six noise sources - Cafe, Fan, Traffic, Birds, Music, Water- with sound levels of 45, 50, 55, 60 dBA were played for 2 minutes in random order. Temperature sensation, temperature preference, humidity sensation, humidity preference, noisiness, loudness, annoyance, and acoustic preference were assessed using bipolar visual analogue scales. The ANOVA and Turkey's post hoc test were used for data analysis. Result: Thermal environmental perceptions were not altered through 2 minutes noise exposure. Acoustical perceptions were altered by thermal conditions. The results were consistent with previous papers, however, the noise exposure time should be carefully considered for further development.

Acoustic Characteristics and Timbre Preferences of Korean Bells (한국 범종에 대한 음향 및 선호도 분석)

  • The sounds of the Korean temple bells, that are located in the various places, were recorded and classified into two groups according to the size of bells. The sound preference was investigated with the subjective listening test on the bells of each group. And the acoustic characteristics of the bells such as the frequency, amplitude, beat period, and 20 dB decay rate of the partials was analyzed. The correlation between the acoustic parameters and timbre preference were analyzed and the acoustic characteristics of highly preferred bell sound were presented.

Audio Contents Adaptation Technology According to User′s Preference on Sound Fields (사용자의 음장선호도에 따른 오디오 콘텐츠 적응 기술)

  • In this paper. we describe a novel method for transforming audio contents according to user's preference on sound field. Sound field effect technologies. which transform or simulate acoustic environments as user's preference, are very important for enlarging the reality of acoustic scene. However huge amount of computational power is required to process sound field effect in real time. so it is hard to implement this functionality at the portable audio devices such as MP3 player. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for providing sound field effect to audio contents independent of terminal's computational power through processing this functionality at the server using user's sound field preference, which is transfered from terminal side. To describe sound field preference, user can use perceptual acoustic parameters as well as the URI address of room impulse response signal. In addition, a novel fast convolution method is presented to implement a sound field effect engine as a result of convoluting with a room impulse response signal at the realtime application. and verified to be applicable to real-time applications through experiments. To verify the evidence of benefit of proposed method we performed two subjective listening tests about sound field descrimitive ability and preference on sound field processed sounds. The results showed that the proposed sound field preference can be applicable to the public.

A Study on the Relationship Between Apparent Auditory Room Size and Acoustic Preference (공간의 청각적 규모감과 음향적 선호도간의 관계)

  • Human tend to rely their information about the size of a space on vision. However, it might be a common experience to perceive a certain difference in spaces without any visual difference, in such spaces as rooms for music performance, multimedia environments with multiple sound sources, and car cabins, where auditory experiences have a certain importance. In the present work, apparent auditory room size was measured at different positions in a room through a series of listening experiments. Also, measurement of room acoustic parameters was carried out and their relationships with perceived auditory room size were analyzed. The results suggest that apparent auditory room sizes were largely dependent on musical clarity, distance between a source and a receiver, and sound pressure level at the listening position. Also, the results from acoustic preference test suggest that smaller apparent room sizes were preferred for listening to orchestral, cello and flute music. The relationship between apparent auditory room size and vocal music was found to be statistically insignificant.
