  • This paper describes a series of researches to diagnose vocal diseases using the statistical method and the acoustic signal analysis method. Speech materials are collected at the hospital. Using the pathological database, the basic parameters for the diagnosis are obtained. Based on the statistical characteristics of the parameters, valid parameters are chosen and those are used to diagnose the pathological speech signal. Cepstrum is used to extract parameters which represents characteristics of pathological speech. 3 layered neural network is used to train and classify pathological speech into normal, benign and malignant case.

  • An investigation was carried out to determine the effect of the thickness of the air-gap installed between the roof metal sheet and the headliner on booming noise in passenger cars. In addition, a way of offering quieter driving condition to drivers and passengers was studied. It was found that a very thin air-gap corresponding to approximately 3/100 of the height of the passenger compartment causes noticeable change in the coupled resonance frequencies and acoustic responses. Furthermore, a guideline is proposed for determining an optimal air-gap thickness during design stage of the air-gap beneath the roof metal sheet for reducing booming noise.

  • The radiated-noise of combat ship is very important in the point of detection and vulnerability assessment. Therefore several kind of underwater acoustic measurement method has been developed. This paper reviews the various measurement concepts and proposes a procedure to select the better one under consideration of measurement conditions. And this paper recommends the portable drift type, which has vertical line array, as the most efficient measurement method in Korean sea.

  • In this study, the piezoelectric ceramics PZT powder was synthesized by Wet-Dry combination method. And the flexible 1-3-0 type composites were fabricated with piezoceramic PZT and Eccogel polymer matrix embedded 3rd phase. Dielectric constant of 1-3-0 type composites was lower than that of single phase PZT ceramics. Thickness mode coupling factor k/sub t/ which was comparable with single phase PZT ceramics and mechanical quality factor Qm were about 0.65 and 6, respectively. These composites are considered as a good candidates for broad-band type transducer applications. The acoustic impedance of 1-3-0 type composites was lower than that of single phase PZT ceramics. Therefore, these composites would be better used for hydrophone applications.

  • For large reciprocating compressors in parallel operation, an analytical study has been carried out on the gas pulsation in associated discharge piping lines. Since the pressure pulsation at a valve, valve dynamics, and the gas flow rate through the valve are interrelated, affecting one another, these need to be solved simultaneously. Acoustic transfer matrix method, which relates acoustic pressure and velocity at one location to those at another location, has been adopted to calculate the effect of the gas flow at one valve location on the gas pulsation at other valve locations.

  • For a discharge system of rotary compressor, analytical investigation on the discharge gas pulsation has been carried out. With the aid of four pole theory, acoustic impedance of the discharge system composed of muffler and cavities on both sides of motor with gas passages between them can be calculated using discrete acoustic elements described by transfer matrices, yielding the relationship between discharge mass flow rate and gas pulsation at the discharge port. This method of predicting the gas pulsation was validated by measurement data. Effects of change in discharge muffler geometries on the gas pulsation also were investigated, demonstrating that this method can be used for muffler design.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine some acoustic characteristics in the ear canal. It was assumed that a sound outside the external auditory canal could be different from the sound inside the external auditory canal. The acoustic signals were captured by a probe microphone placed at a distance within 1 cm from the tympanic membrane, and a reference microphone was placed over the upper pinna. Three vowels /a/, /i/, /u/ were recorded from a normal adult male speaker. The parameters such as the formant frequency ($Fl\simF5$) and the peak intensity were measured using a speech analyser, PCquirer. It was found that the entering part of the external auditory canal functions as a narrowing point as to the speech that passes through the free field. Results show that acoustic characteristics were changed for speech discrimination rather than speech perception.

  • This study was conducted to determine changes of voice after consuming raw egg, apple, and pear. Ten college students vocalized /a/ before and after having raw egg, apple, and pear. Dr. Speech was utilized to obtain acoustic changes of subjects' voice. A t-test was performed to analyze changes of voice before and after consuming raw egg, apple, and pear. No significant difference was found in acoustic measurements before and after having the 3 food items. However, the subjects seemed to show some improvements in jitter, HNR, and NNE in the order of raw egg, apple and pear even though they did not reach a statistical significance. It was concluded that a more systematic research paradigm was needed in order to objectively reject or substantiate the results of the current investigation.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the acoustic properties of fricatives, /ㅅ, ㅆ/ produced by children with functional articulation disorder and normal children (N=20, aged 6-7). All subjects showed significant differences in both the length of friction intervals and breathing intervals of fricatives according to the changes in the environment presented within each group. However, there is a difference in the extent of variation in length between the two groups. This means that children with functional articulation disorder have greater difficulty in adjusting fricative noises according to changes in the CV VCV environment than normal children.
