  • The present study investigates on the experimental and numerical results of heat transfer in the acoustic fields induced by ultrasonic waves. The strong upwards flow which moves from the bottom surface in a cavity to the free surface called as "acoustic streaming" was visualized by a particle image velocimetry (PIV). In addition, the augmentation ratio of heat transfer was experimentally investigated in the presence of acoustic streaming and was compared with the profiles of acoustic pressure calculated by the numerical analysis. A coupled finite element-boundary element method (FE-BEM) was applied for a numerical analysis. The results of experimental and numerical studies clearly show that acoustic pressure variations caused by ultrasonic waves in a medium are closely related to the augmentation of heat transfer.

  • Speech shares acoustic features with other sound-based processing, which makes it difficult to distinguish phonological process from acoustic process in speech processing. In this study, we examined the difference between acoustic process and phonological process during repetition tasks. By contrasting various stimuli in different lengths, we localized neural correlates of acoustic process within bilateral superior temporal gyrus, which was consistent with the previous studies. The activated patterns were widely overlapped between words and pseudowords, i.e., contents-free. In contrast, phonological process showed left-lateralized activation in middle temporal gyrus located at anterior temporal areas. It implies that phonological process is contents-specific as shown in our previous study, and at the same time, more language-specific. Thus, we suggest that phonological process is distinguished from acoustic process in that it is always accompanied with the obligatory access to available phonological codes, which can be an entry of the mental lexicon.

  • Acoustic modal property of the vehicle passenger compartment is a very important factor which dominates vehicle interior noise in the low frequency range. In most real cars, trunk noise often transfers into the passenger compartment since the two cavities are acoustically coupled. This study identifies the major coupling path by examining the variation of the coupled acoustic modal frequencies and modes. An 1/2 size acryl compartment model is designed and manufactured for the measurement and analysis of coupled acoustic modes. Experimental result shows that package tray contributes to the coupling much more than the back seat and hole size of the package tray is an important design factor to control low frequency acoustic modes in the coupled system.

  • This paper deals with the ESM(equivalent source method) with the continuation of acoustic near-field for NAH(near-field acoustic holography) to overcome the finite measurement aperture effect and reconstruct the normal velocity on an arbitrarily shaped structure surface. The continuation method is an extension of the measured sound field into a region outside and is based on the Green's function relating acoustic quantities on the two conformal surfaces. This algorithm is not limited to planar surfaces and can be applied to arbitrarily shaped surfaces. The ESM is an alternative approach of BEM-based NAH for the reconstruction on a general structure. In ESM the acoustic field is represented by a set of point sources located over a surface that is close to the structure surface. The simulation results of this study shows that the reconstruction error of particle velocity on the source surface is 11% and 16% for planar and cylindrical sources separately.

  • The objective this study is to estimate the feasibility of acoustic emission method for the internal leak from the valves in nuclear power plants. From the experimental results, it was suggested that the acoustic emission method for monitoring of leak was feasible. When the background levels are higher than the acoustic signals from leak, we can detect the leak analyzing the spectrum of the remainders which take the background noise from the acoustic signals.

  • In this study, we propose a method to improve the accuracy of acoustic odometry using optimal frame interval selection for Fourier-based image registration. The accuracy of acoustic odometry is related to the phase correlation result of image pairs obtained from the forward-looking sonar (FLS). Phase correlation failure is caused by spurious peaks and high-similarity image pairs that can be prevented by optimal frame interval selection. We proposed a method of selecting the optimal frame interval by analyzing the factors affecting phase correlation. Acoustic odometry error was reduced by selecting the optimal frame interval. The proposed method was verified using field data.

  • In order to analyze the quantitative characteristics of acoustic streaming, experimental setup of 3-D stereoscopic PIV(particle imaging velocimetry) was designed and quantitative ultrasonic flow fields in the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source were measured. Utilizing acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration, surface temperature drop of cooling object was also measured. The study on smart cooling method by acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration was performed due to the empirical relations of flow pattern, average flow velocity, different gaps, and enhancement on cooling rates in the gap. Average velocity fields and maximum acoustic streaming velocity in the open gap between the stationary cylindrical heat source and ultrasonic vibrator were experimentally measured at no vibration, resonance, and non-resonance. It was clearly observed that the enhancement of cooling rates existed owing to the acoustic air flow in the gap at resonance and non-resonance induced by ultrasonic vibration. The ultrasonic wave propagating into air in the gap creates steady-state secondary eddy called acoustic streaming which enhances heat transfer from the heat source to encompassing air. The intensity of the acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration experimentally depended upon the gap between the heat source and ultrasonic vibrator. The ultrasonic vibration at resonance caused the increase of the acoustic streaming velocity and convective heat transfer augmentation when the flow fields by 3D stereoscopic PIV and temperature drop of the heat source were measured experimentally. The acoustic streaming velocity of air enhancement on cooling rates in the gap is maximal when the gap agrees with the multiples of half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave, which is specifically 12 mm.

  • The present study presents the design procedures and the acoustic properties of the main hall of Ansan Cultural Arts Center in Korea which has opened in 2004. The acoustic design values are compared with the measured acoustic properties of the completed multi-purpose hall. Acoustic design criteria were suggested in the design stage through the 3-dimentional computer simulations. The acoustic parameters including SPL, RT, C80, $D_{50}$M, RASTI were measured in the hall after completed. Acoustic measurements were carried out in the 40 measurement points using MLS sound source signal in 4 different sound source points. The results show the even distribution of sound levels within the 2.0dB of difference among all seats. The reverberation time of 1.66sec was measured which is similar to the objective value of 1.65 sec in empty states. It was also found that average C80 values lie in the objective extents of C80 from -1 to 3dB and average D50 value of 54 was measured. Thus, it is concluded that the hall can be used as a multi-purpose hall with a suitable acoustic conditions.

  • In case of indoor gymnastics training floor, in view of its characteristics, since it is simultaneously required the related smooth communication between the coach and the player, also the acoustic performance regarding to the clearness of music, besides the sport activity, the consideration about the acoustic character has entered the stage as an indispensable element. On such viewpoint, recently constructed dome-typed gymnastic training floor was optimized acoustic design with remodeling through acoustic simulation test. And acoustic satisfaction degree and reaction was attempted to investigate about the gymnastics training floor estimating value of human's psychological(sensual) degree using auralization that enables to experience the virtual sound field at the stage of design. As the result of investigation about the research on the space of object, it could be known that the valuation regarding to the acoustic performance of 'after-improvement' was distinctly more refined than that of 'before-improvement'. It is now considering that such result of the study can be utilized as the useful data which enables to improve the retrenchment effect of the construction cost as well as the acoustic capability, by means of the prediction control on the acoustic problem from the stage of design, for the occasion when the similar indoor sport gymnasium is planning to build for the near future.

  • In concert halls and auditoriums, acoustic reflector and stage enclosure is one of the main factors on the room and stage acoustic characteristics. As a stage enclosure and acoustic reflector honey comb based light-weight reflector is widely used, because it is easy to install. However, there was not enough research on the surface density effect on room and stage acoustics. In this study, sound absorption coefficient tests on three kinds of wooden acoustic reflectors with different surface density were conducted. Surface density of acoustic reflector was changed from 11 kg/$m^2$ to 41 kg/$m^2$. For the low frequency excitation, sub-woofer was used with omnidirectional loud-speaker simultaneously. From the experiments, it was found that sound absorption coefficient below 250 Hz band was decrease by the increment of surface density. In order to check the influence of the surface density on room and stage acoustic parameters, room acoustic simulation was conducted with sound absorption coefficients, which were tested in reverberation chamber. By the increment of surface density of acoustic reflector, RT(reverberation time) and EDT(early decay time) were increased. Also, ST(stage support) was improved in low frequency bands.
