The purpose of the present study was to explore the radiological and acoustic characteristics of "Arae-a" (/${\cdot}$/) articulation in two male Jeju language speakers, focusing on selected measures in radiological images derived from computed tomography scans, as well as the first and the second formant measures in selected vowels. An elderly male speaker (a 78-year-old) and a young male speaker (a 34-year-old) participated in the study. During the production of four selected vowels, the shape of the vocal tract was identified, and selected measures were obtained from the elderly participant's computed tomography (CT) scans. For acoustic analysis, the participants were given a list of near-minimal pairs consisting of 112 words and asked to read them aloud. The results indicated that the "Arae-a" (/${\cdot}$/) articulation of the elderly speaker showed unique acoustic and radiological characteristics compared to other similar vowels, thus presenting substantial consistency with the descriptions of the "Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon." In contrast, the F1 and F2 measures of the young male's /${\cdot}$/ articulation were not distinguished from those of /ㅗ/. Current results, in part, support the scientific principles underlying the invention of "Arae-a," which reflects the shape of the vocal tract during production, and the necessity for further research.
Centrifugal fans are widely used in industrial practices but the noise generated by these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the centrifugal fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the flow discharged from the impeller and the cutoff in the easing. However, only a few researches have been carried out on predicting the noise because of the difficulty in obtaining detailed information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a centrifugal fan, and to calculate the effects of small vanes that are attached in original impeller - Splitter impeller. We assume that the impeller rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the impeller is incompressible and inviscid. So, a discrete vortex method (DVM) is used to model the centrifugal fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic source. The splitter impeller changes the acoustic characteristics as well as performance. Two-splitter type impeller and splitter impeller which splitter locates in jet region are good for acoustic characteristics.

The wheat-gluten vendor's Shears Sound which was ever able to hear barely at the conventional market place or some specific gala period is a familiar sound to us, also a delightful sound even without any reason. The blunt Shears Sound spreading faraway attracts the mind of hearer and it makes neighbors gathering. Nevertheless, it becomes to be left as being a forgotten sound little by little to our society that rapidly growing with high degree. In this Study, as for an acoustic analysis of the wheat-gluten Shears Sound, as being a forgotten our own sound, in order to examine the difference according to the character of various shears, after making 26 pieces of various Shears and we had ever measured, appraised on the sound pressure level by each wave-form and frequency of respective Shears Sounds at the semi-anechoic chamber, W University. At the study result, the acoustic character of wheat-gluten vendor's Shears Sound was able to be grasped, and we could find out 4 pieces of Shears which were judged as more superior in acoustic capability than the existing wheat-gluten Shears among the 26 pieces of various Shears.

The purpose of this study is to research the influence of soundscape in the preference of landscape. Specifically, standards type of communication are applied to the landscape such as positive scenery and negative scenery. The spatial image was analyzed by the variables of Kaplan\`s information process model. The level of visual preferences was measured by a type of acoustic information and visual information in the landscape, and this data was analyzed by multiple regression. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; The value of landscape preference was maximum value in Type I and minimum value in Type II from all fluent of coherence, mystery, and legibility to, except complexity, and it was not different from preference. These results clearly show the influence of sounds effecting decision of landscape preference. It was different by the type of acoustic information and visual information in landscape. The results of ANOVA among types of acoustic information were differences of mean between positive sound, no sound and negative sound from coherence, mystery, and legibility to, except complexity. These variables may be the major factors which must be considered in planning and designing as the functional basis for quantitative analysis.
Acoustic and aerodynamic characteristics of Cheju consonants were examined with the focus on the well-known three-way distinction among stops (i.e., lenis, fortis, aspirated) and the two-way distinction between sand s*. Acoustic parameters examined for the stops included VOT, relative stop burst energy, Fo at the vowel onset, H1-H2, and H1-F2 at the vowel onset. For the fricatives s and s*, acoustic parameters were fricative duration, Fo, centroid of the fricative noise, RMS energy of the frication, H1-H2 and Hl-F2 at the onset of the following vowel. In investigating aerodynamics, intraoral pressure and oral flow were included for the bilabial stops. Results indicate that, although Cheju and Korean are not mutually intelligible, acoustic and aerodynamic properties of Cheju consonants are very similar in every respect to those of the standard Korean. Among other findings there are three crucial points worth recapitulating. First, stops are systematically differentiated by the voice quality of the following vowel. Second, stops are also differentiated by aerodynamic mechanisms. The aspirated and fortis stops are similar in supralaryngeal articulation, but employ a different relation between intraoral pressure and flow. Finally, our study suggests that the fricative s is better categorized as 'lenis' than as 'aspirated' in terms of its phonetic realization.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of needle-embedding therapy to facial paralysis patient after acoustic neuroma surgery. The patient was treated by basic oriental medicine treatment. We evaluated the effect of Needle-Embedding Therapy by using Yanagihara's unweighted grading system and subjective satisfaction score. The final Yanagihara's score was higher than before the treatment. The patient was satisfied after Needle-Embedding Therapy. Needle-Embedding Therapy was effective against facial paralysis after acoustic neuroma surgery. Further studies will be required to identify the beneficial effect of Needle-Embedding Therapy in facial paralysis after acoustic neuroma surgery.

This study reviewed the theory of acoustic emission applying generation of acoustic emission in metal cutting and proposed a relationship between fundamental cutting parameters and the root mean square (RMS) voltage of the acoustic emission on the basis of the mechanics of the orthogonal cutting operation. Experimental results are presented for 6063-T5 Auminum and the validity of this relationship is evaluated by a series of tests varying cutting speed, feed rate and rake angle in orthogonal cutting. The original formula derived theoretically has been modified in order to utilize independent of fundamental cutting parameters. RMS voltage of acoustic emission depends on cutting speed and strain rate, but it is not much affected by feed rate. Applying lubricant, the drop of RMS level has been observed.
Foreign accent in second language production depends heavily on the transfer of features from the first language. This study examines acoustic variations in segments and suprasegments by native and nonnative speakers of English, searching for patterns of the transfer and plausible indexes of foreign accent in English. The acoustic variations are analyzed with recorded read speech by 20 native English speakers and 50 Korean learners of English, in terms of vowel formants, vowel duration, and syllabic variation induced by stress. The results show that the acoustic measurements of vowel formants and vowel and syllable durations display difference between native speakers and nonnative speakers. The difference is robust in the production of lax vowels, diphthongs, and stressed syllables, namely the English-specific features. L1 transfer on L2 specification is found both at the segmental levels and at the suprasegmental levels. The transfer levels measured as groups and individuals further show a continuum of divergence from the native-like target. Overall, the eldest group, students who are in the graduate schools, shows more native-like patterns, suggesting weaker foreign accent in English, whereas the high school students tend to involve larger deviation from the native speakers' patterns. Individual results show interdependence between segmental transfer and prosodic transfer, and correlation with self-reported proficiency levels. Additionally, experience factors in English such as length of English study and length of residence in English speaking countries are further discussed as factors to explain the acoustic variation.
