  • An approximation of speed of sound in the measurement plane is essential for the inverse estimation of temperature. To this end, an inverse problem relating the measured retarded time data in between set of sensors and actuators array located on the wall is formulated. The involved transfer matrix and its coefficient vectors approximate speed of sound of the measurement plane by using the radial basis function with finite number of interpolation points deployed inside the target field. Then, the temperature field can be reconstructed by using spatial interpolation technique, which can achieve high spatial resolution with proper number of interpolation points. A large number of retarded time data of acoustic paths in between sensors and arrays are needed to obtain accurate reconstruction result. However, the shortage of interpolation points due to practical limitations can cause the decrease of spatial resolution and deterioration of the reconstruction result. In this works, a regeneration for obtaining the additional retarded time data for an arbitrary acoustic path is suggested to overcome the shortage of interpolation points. By applying the regeneration technique, many interpolation points can be deployed inside the field by increasing the number of retarded time data. As a simulation example, two rectangular duct sections having arbitrary temperature distribution are reconstructed by two different data set: measured data only, combination of measured and regenerated data. The result shows a decrease in reconstruction error by 15 % by combining the original and regenerated retarded time data.

  • Sensors that are used on wireless sensor networks can be divided into two types: directional sensors, such as PIR, image, and electromagnetic sensors; and non-directional sensors, such as seismic, acoustic and magnetic sensors. In order to guarantee the line-of-sight of a directional sensor, the installation location of the sensor must be higher than ground level. Among non-directional sensors, seismic sensors should be installed on the ground in order to ensure the maximal performance. As a result, seismic sensors may have network connectivity problems due to communication failure. In this paper, we propose a 3D node deployment method to maximize the coverage and the network connectivity considering the sensor-specific properties. The proposed method is for non-directional sensors to be placed on the ground, while the directional sensor is installed above the ground, using trees or poles, to maximize the coverage. As a result, through the topology that the detection data from non-directional sensors are transmitted to the directional sensor, we can maximize the network connectivity. Simulation results show that our strategy improves sensor coverage and network connectivity.

  • In this paper, we propose a moving target localization algorithm using acoustic spectrograms. A time-versus-frequency spectrogram provide a information of trajectory of the moving target in underwater. For a source at sufficiently long range from a receiver, broadband striation patterns seen in spectrogram represents the mutual interference between modes which reflected by surface and bottom. The slope of the maximum intensity striation is influenced by waveguide invariant parameter ${\beta}$ and distance between target and sensor. When more than two sensors are applied to measure the moving ship-radited noise, the slope and frequency of the maximum intensity striation are depend on distance between target and receiver. We assumed two sensors to fixed point then form a circle of apollonios which set of all points whose distances from two fixed points are in a constant ratio. In case of three sensors are applied, two circle form an intersection point so coordinates of this point can be estimated as a position of target. To evaluates a performance of the proposed localization algorithm, simulation is performed using acoustic propagation program.

  • The soundscape is a novel attempt to offer comfortable sound environments at the urban public spaces by adding pleasant sounds and removing unagreeable ones. Most important factors to be considered therein are to determine what kind of sounds to offer and how to adjust them to the changing circumstances. But nowadays, the audio system provided in the almost every urban public spaces is just only a PA system with CD player or radio broadcasting music, the provided sound is only intended by the operator. Furthermore, providing the soundscape which fits to the situation and the atmospheric conditions needs enormous effort and time, it is almost impossible with the existing PA systems which installed in the public spaces nowadays. Thus, the new sounds cape reproduction system was developed on the basis of the prior VAFSS(Virtual Acoustic Field Simulation System) systems, which has the artificial intelligence to read out the mood of the field and select the appropriate soundscape to reproduce. In this new system, various environmental sensors with standard voltage, current or resistance output are available simultaneously, and the monitoring with video and sound became available via the TCP/IP communication protocol. The update and control of this system can be very convenient, so the money, time and the effort of maintaining and providing soundscape on the public spaces can be enormously saved. This new soundscape reproducing system was named as Virtual Acoustic Field Simulation System II (V AFSS II).

  • This research develops an ultrasonic sensor to measure the distance in underwater. The ultrasonic transducer transmits an acoustic signal to an object and receives the echo signal reflected from the object. The ultrasonic driver calculates a distance by multiplying the acoustic speed to the time of flight(TOF) which is the time necessary for the acoustic signal to travel from the transducer to the object. We apply a thresholding and a cross correlation methods to detect the TOF and show their results. When an echo pulse is corrupted with noise and its shape is distorted, the cross correlation method is used to find the TOF based on the maximum similarity between the reference and the delayed echo signals. The echoes used for the reference signal are achieved at the different environments, which improves the performance of the sensor. This paper describes the driver of the acoustic sensor and analyzes the performance of sensors in different measurement environments.

  • The ultrasonic hyperthermia for oncology has been developed and studied. The HIFU(high intensity focused ultrasound) is the most recent method to treat the tumor by using ultrasound. In this study, an insertion-type transducer for treating a prostate cancer, which can focus the ultrasonic beam mechanically and electrically, was designed and developed. The developed transducer was composed of three arrays, and each array has 32 elements. For the purpose of the mechanical focusing, both side arrays are slanted to the center array by $15^{\circ}$. With this structure, NFL(near field length) was set up as 30 mm. The PZT-4 and two matching layers were used, and the backing layer was excepted to prevent energy losses. The acoustic field analysis and the heating test were performed to evaluate the performance of developed transducer. The shape of an acoustic field, peak pressure, and acoustic pressure distribution were compared with numerical simulation. The NFL was 32 mm, the beam width was 5 mm, focal area was $40\;mm^2$, and peak pressure was 5.5 MPa. With heating by using developed transducer, the temperature increased up to $33^{\circ}C$ at focal zone. As a result of this study, the usefulness of suggested transducer for prostate cancer hyperthermia was confirmed by the acoustic field analysis and the heating test with TMM(tissue mimicking) phantom.

  • This paper proposes a transmitted power saving method for underwater acoustic sensors considering the acoustic wave propagation characteristic that propagation loss increases more rapidly in higher frequency band. In the proposed scheme, sensor nodes are divided into a few groups based on the distance between sink node and the sensor node, and each group uses its own frequency band. The node group with longer distance uses lower frequency and the node group with shorter distance uses higher frequency. By means of such a distance-dependent frequency allocation, all sensor nodes are able to maintain a certain target signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but also save transmitted power. In addition, the optimum size of node group is obtained, and also a frequency allocation algorithm is proposed accordingly. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme saves transmitted power by more 10 dB comparing non-grouping methods.

  • Piezoresistive-type, capacitive-type, and optical-type sensors have mainly been used for measuring a strain. However, in building a sensor network for remote monitoring using these conventional sensors there are disadvantages such as the complexity of a measuring system including wireless communication circuitry and high cost. In this paper, we demonstrates a highly-sensitive surface acoustic wave (SAW) strain sensor which is advantageous to harsh environments and wireless network. We designed and fabricated the SAW strain sensor. The SAW strain sensor attached on a specimen was tested with a tensile tester. The strain on the sensor surface was measured with a commercial strain gauge and compared with that obtained from strain analysis. The central frequency shift of the SAW sensor was measured with a network analyzer. The sensitivity of the SAW strain sensor is 134 $Hz/{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ which is high compared to previous results.

  • The signal-based acoustic emission (AE) characterization of concrete fracture process utilizing home-programmed AE monitoring system was performed for three kinds of static loading tests (Cubic-splitting, Direct-shear and Pull-out). Each test was carried out to induce a distinct fracture mode of concrete. Apart from monitoring and recording the corresponding fracture process of concrete, various methods were utilized to distinguish the characteristics of detected AE waveform to interpret the information of fracture behavior of AE sources (i.e. micro-cracks of concrete). Further, more signal-based characters of AE in different stages were analyzed and compared in this study. This research focused on the relationship between AE signal characteristics and fracture processes of concrete. Thereafter, the mode of concrete fracture could be represented in terms of AE signal characteristics. By using cement-based piezoelectric composite sensors, the AE signals could be detected and collected with better sensitivity and minimized waveform distortion, which made the characterization of AE during concrete fracture process feasible. The continuous wavelet analysis technique was employed to analyze the wave-front of AE and figure out the frequency region of the P-wave & S-wave. Defined RA (rising amplitude), AF (average frequency) and P-wave & S-wave importance index were also introduced to study the characters of AE from concrete fracture. It was found that the characters of AE signals detected during monitoring could be used as an indication of the cracking behavior of concrete.
