The purpose of this study was to increase the current understanding of the acoustic characteristics of voices with advancing age. The relationship between age-related changes in body physiology and certain acoustic characteristics of voice was studied in a sample of 80 men representing four chronological age groupings (20-29, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79) who were all of good physical condition. Each subject was asked to phonate the vowel /a/, /i/, and /u/ for as long as possible at comfortable frequency and intensity level and read the sentence. A promising voice analysis program (Multi-Dimensional Voice $Program^{TM}$) was used to measure the fundamental frequency ($f_0$), jitter, shimmer, $f_0$ variation, peak-amplitude variation, smoothed pitch perturbation quotient, smoothed amplitude perturbation quotient, soft phonation index, $f_0$-tremor intensity index, amplitude tremor intensity index, and noise-to-harmonics ratio from the samples.
The acoustic analysis of diadochokinesis(DDK) has been used to evaluate dysarthria. However, there has not been an automatic method to evaluate dysarthria. The aim of this study was to introduce a new automated program to measure DDK tasks and to apply this to clinical patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease(IPD). Fourty-seven patients with IPD and a healthy control group of twenty participants were selected with every DDK task recorded three times. Twenty-five acoustic parameters in the program were developed. The relevant parameters were times of DDK, pitch related parameters, intensity parameters which were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA. Significant differences between the groups were found in the times of DDK, pitch related parameters, and intensity parameters. The findings indicated that the pitch of control group was more stable than that of the IPD. Even though the patients with IPD had a higher intensity value, this phenomenon was caused by the weakness of the IPD group who could not control their speech with a breath.
Acoustic intensity is usually estimated by the cross-spectrum of acoustic pressure at two adjacent micrphones. The cross-spectrum calculated by digital Fourier transform technique will unavoidally have leakage error since the period of signal will not be usually coincident with record length. Therefore, the acoustic intensity estimated by the conventional r]n analyzer will show distorted value. In this paper the expression of the Fourier transformed data of a harmonic signal is formulated when there is leakage error. The method to elimate the effect of leakage error from the contaminated data is also proposed. Some numerical examples show the validation of the proposed method.

We have all heard sounds that did not sound "right" while riding in an automobile. Objectionable sounds are difficult to find and understand because the sound field is complex and dynamic in the near field of an automobile. Many different noise sources and transmission paths must be understood before an engineering change can be recommended. This paper reviews the fundamental characterization of sound and chscusses the Sound Intensity measurement technique. Sound intensity measurements locate sources and sinks of acoustic energy. Used with narrowband analysis equipment, acoustic noise sources can be identified. Sound intensity measurements are made -in-situ and do not require specmi anechoic facilities. The measurement results in a vector representation of the near field sound field and can discriminate between multiple sound sources.d sources.
Measuring phonatory stability using MDVP(Multi-dimensional voice program, Kay Elemetrics Corp., NJ, USA) are becoming popular in many Korean clinics and laboratories, yet questions about standardization and reference values have remained. The purpose of present study was to examine the effects of frequency and intensity variation on the results of acoustic analysis related to phonatory stability. Twenty young adults(ten females and ten males) were asked to sustain vowel /a/ for more than 3 seconds under 9 different pitch and loudness conditions. Using MDVP, nine voice samples were analyzed, and jitter percent, fundamental frequency variation, shimmer percent, peak amplitude variation, noise to harmonic ratio, amplitude tremor intensity index, and degree of subharmonics were compared. The results showed that intensity changes can significantly affect various phonatory stability measures, and the lowest perturbation values can be obtained from slightly louder(10dB) phonatory condition than comfortable level phonation.
Microstructure of the bell made with Cu-Sn alloys was examined by optical and scanning electron microscope and that analyzed quantitatively with image analyzer. Also acoustic characteristics of the bells were measured in detail by using FFT type power spectrum analyzer. ${\alpha}-single$ phases of large grains only were observed in Cu-5%Sn alloy. However mixed structure of primary ${\alpha}-phase$ and eutectoid of ${\alpha}+{\delta}%_o$ was existed in the Cu-Sn alloys with more than 9%Sn. Also the area fraction of eutectoid phases gradually increased with an increased Sn content. From the result of acoustic test, it was found that frequency and tonal intensity decreased with the increased Sn content from 5%Sn to 11%Sn, and those were rather increased with further increase of that. The lowest frequency and tonal intensity were showed in Cu-11%Sn, and porosity decreased considerably frequency and tonal intensity of the bells.
A new relationship between total acoustic emission counts per cycle and crack growth rate is derived in terms of stress intensity factor to explain the acoustic emission behavior due to fatigue crack growth. The experimental results of the total acoustic emission counts per cycle obtained from aluminium 5,000 series alloy specimens are compared with the theoretical values. Both experimental and theoretical total acoustic emission counts per cycle result in the linear relationship to the crack length.
