  • The paper deals with the analysis of the effectiveness of acoustic emission monitoring and diagnostics of engineering products. We discuss the results of the processing results of the field experiment to study the acoustic emission in the alloy and its welded joints in the presence of technological defects. We study the characteristics of the output of acoustic emission signals at different stages of elastic-plastic deformation of alloys. Analyzed acoustic chart and the output waveform of the acoustic emission for the different types of welds. Studies have shown the effectiveness of the Acoustic emission techniques and help improve the accuracy of non-destructive testing systems in problems of automation and control.

  • Recently, the wide range of the composite materials is used for the making airplanes, trains and automobiles body for the lightweight. Despite having complex structures, composite materials usually have well defined mechanical characteristics. However, composite materials are difficult to understand the fracture mechanism clearly by simple mechanical test. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) combined with mechanical testing can play a more important role and especially Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) would become known to be a useful tool to assess damage and fracture behavior of composites. In this study The experiment was performed to acquire the acoustic emission signal during tensile test using unidirectional CFRP specimen and the data was analyzed the acoustic emission parameters with the waveform.

  • Edge notched A16061-T6 aluminum was repaired with a GFRP composite patch as a function of the number of stacking, Damage progress of specimen for tension load has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE), AE energy rate, hit rate, amplitude, waveform and 1st peak frequency distribution were analyzed. Fracture processes were classified into Al cracking, Fiber breakage, Resin cracking and Delamination. Displacement of a specimen can be divided into Region I, II and ill according to acoustic emission characteristics. Region II where the patch itself was actually fractured was focused on to clarify the AE characteristics difference for the number of stacking.

  • Dental composite resin is a kind of the particle - reinforced composite material, and is widely used in recent dental restoration of anterior and posterior tooth region. The purpose of this study was to investigate the fracture behaviour according to volume fractions and external findings of the filler particles for better interpretation of the fracture characteristics of posterior dental composite resins by analytic method of fracture mechanics. The plane strain fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) and Acoustic Emission were determined with three - point bending test using the single edge notch specimen according to the ASTM - E399, and its analyzed data was compared with filler volume fractions derived from the standard ashing test and scanning electron fractographs of each specimen including the unfilled experimental resin as a control. The results were that the value of fracture toughness of the composite resin material was in the range from 0.85 MPa$\sqrt{m}$ to 1.60 MPa$\sqrt{m}$ and was higher than the value of the unfilled experimental resin, and the fracture behaviours dervied from Acoustic Emission analysis show prominent differences according to the volume fraction and the size of filler particles used in each composite resin. The degree of resistance against crack propagation seems to be increase and the fractographs demonstrate the high degree of surface roughness and irregularity according with the increase of fracture toughness value.

  • In order to observe the internal damage of concrete in real time, we introduced acoustic emission nondestructive detecting technology into a series of fracture tests; the test results revealed the whole process that concrete undergoes when it sustains damage that leads to failure, according to the change rules of the acoustic emission parameters. The results showed that both the initiation and unstable loads can be accurately determined using the abrupt change of the acoustic emission rate curves and the turning point of the acoustic emission parameters' accumulative curves. The whole process, from damage to failure, includes five phases, beginning with damage, such as cracking, a stable crack growth process, a critical unstable stage, and unstable propagation. The brittle fracture characteristics of concrete change when steel bars are joined, because the steel bars and the concrete structure bond, which causes an increase in the acoustic emission signals within the fracture process of the reinforced concrete. The unstable propagation stage is also extended. Our research results provide a valid methodology and technical explanations, which can help researchers to monitor the cracking process of concrete structures, in real time, during actual projects.

  • The damage in concrete structures generally starts with microcracking and thus it is important to find and explore these microcracks in concrete in order to ensure appropriate safety and serviceability. The purpose of the present study is to identify the damage characteristics of concrete structures due to cracking by employing the acoustic emission techniques. A comprehensive experimental study has been done. The cracking damage under tensile and flexural loadings have been identified and the bond damage between steel and concrete have been also characterized. It is seen that the amplitudes and energy level of Acoustic Emission(AE) events are found to be relatively small for bond cracking damages and large for tensile cracking damages. The characteristic equations of the AE events for various cracking damages have been proposed based on the present test data. The internal microcracks are progressively developed ahead of a visible actual crack and the present study clearly exhibits these damage mechanism for various types of cracking in concrete. The present study provides useful data which can be used to identify the various types of cracking damages in concrete structures. This will allow efficient maintenance of concrete structures through monitoring of internal cracking based on acoustic emission.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) is known to be sensitive to fracture process and so it was expected that AE data may propose as a means of monitoring the fracture information. The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristic of AE signal emitted from glass during Vickers indentation. To observe AE characteristics by surface effect, both glass and coating glass were studied. During Vickers indentation loading, AE signal resulted from penny-like crack is detected. During Vickers indentation unloading, AE signal resulted from both radial/median crack and lateral crack is detected. In case of indentation on glass, the emission energy(${\epsilon}$) is found to be approximately proportional to the fourth power of the crack length. In case of indentation on coating glass, the emission energy(${\epsilon}$) is approximately proportional to the crack length.

  • Turning experiments are conducted to investigate characteristics of acoustic emission due to wear of the coated tool. The AE signals are obtained with a sensor attached to tool holder side. Tool states are identified with scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. It is demonstrated that the AE signals provide reliable informations about the cutting processes and tool states. Moreover, tool wear can be detected successfully using the AE-RMS.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the emission of acoustic signals from three reinforced concrete beams at cracking and failure processes. Acoustic emission(AE) characteristics of reinforced concrete beams were investigated during the entire loading period. AE technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of damage process and the failure mechanism of reinforced concrete beam with natural and recycled aggregates. The influences of different aggregate in concrete on AE characteristics were investigated as well.
