The objective of this paper is to investigate the applicability of acoustic emission(AE) technique to monitor the progress of the thermal shock damage on alumina ceramic. For this purpose, alumina ceramic specimen was heated in the furnace and then was quenched in the water tank. When the specimen was quenched in the water tank, complex AE signals due to the initiation of micro-cracks and boiling effect were generated by the progress of thermal shock damage. These mixed AE signals have to be classified for monitoring the degree of the thermal shock damage of alumina ceramics. In this paper, the mixed AE signals generated from both the boiling effect and the crack initiation under thermal shock test was analyzed. The characteristics of AE signals were also discussed by considering the variation of bending strength and Yongs modulus of specimens.

Electro-micromechanical techniques were applied using four-probe method for carbon nanotube (CNT) or nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their content. Carbon black (CB) was used to compare with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) relating to electrical resistivity for double-matrix composites test. Sensing for fiber tension was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic strain. The sensitivity for fiber damage such as fiber fracture and fiber tension was the highest for CNT/epoxy composites, and in CB case they were the lowest compared with CNT and CNF. Reinforcing effect of CNT obtained from apparent modulus measurement was the highest in the same content. The results obtained from sensing fiber damage were correlated with the morphological observation of nano-scale structure using FE-SEM. The information on fiber damage and matrix deformation and reinforcing effect of carbon nanocomposites could be obtained from electrical resistivity measurement as a new concept of nondestructive evaluation.

This work describes an investigation into the feasibility of using an acoustic emission (AE) technique to evaluate the integrity of a composite actuator with a PZT ceramic under electromechanical cyclic loading. AE characteristics have been analyzed in terms of the behavior of the AE count rate and signal waveform in association with the performance degradation of the composite actuator during the cyclic tests. The results showed that the fatigue cracking of the composite actuator with a PZT ceramic occurred only in the PZT ceramic layer, and that the performance degradation caused by the fatigue damage varied immensely depending on the existence of a protecting composite bottom layer. We confirmed the correlations between the fatigue damage mechanisms and AE signal types for the actuators that exhibited multiple modes of fatigue damage; transgranular micro damage, intergranular fatigue cracking, and breakdown by a short circuiting were related to a burst type signal showing a shortly rising and slowly decaying waveform with a comparably low voltage, a continuous type signal showing a gradual rising and slowly decaying waveform with a very high voltage and a burst and continuous type signal with a high voltage, respectively. Results from the present work showed that the evolution of fatigue damage in the composite actuator with a PZT ceramic can be nondestructively identified via in situ AE monitoring and microscopic observations.

Currently in Japan, the use of the small wind turbine is an upward trend. There are already many well established small wind turbine generators in use and their various failures have been reported. The most commonly sighted failure is blade damage. Thus the research purpose was set to develop a simple failure diagnostic system, where an Acoustic Emission (AE) signal was produced from the failure part of a blade which was measured by AE sensor. The failure diagnostic technique was thoroughly examined. Concurrently, the damage part of the blade was imitated, the AE signal was measured, and a FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis was carried out, and was compared with the output characteristic. When one sheet of a blade was damaged 40mm or more, the level was computed at which failure could be diagnosed.
Acoustic Emission was monitored during tensile test and loading-holding-unloa-ding cycle test for two types (notched and unnotched) of CFRP specimens. AE activities showed that the fiber breakage during tensile tests depended upon the specimen geometry. We obtained new AE parameter such as the ration (damage ratio= AE events during unloading test / AE events during loading test) and the felicity ratio from which we investigated dynamic fracture process of CFRP specimens. The damage ratio of AE events was shown to be a good indicator to distinguish the generated fracture mechanism, such as fiber breakage and delamination. Also, ultrasonic testing results after loading-holding-unloading cycle test were good agreement with AE test results to detect defects or fiber breakage.
Fiber is an important ingredient in fiber-reinforced cement composite (FRCC) which can control fracture of cement composite by bridging action. In compliance with the action of the fiber and the aggregate size, it also showed a different failure mechanism. For practical application, it is needed to investigate the fracture behavior of the FRCC and to understand the micro-mechanism of cement matrix with reinforcing fiber. In order to evaluate a characteristics of fracture process in the FRCC, acoustic emission (AE) technique was used for the analysis and evaluation of FRCC damage by acoustic emission under flexural and cyclic compressive loadings. The AE signals were monitored by AMSY4 AE instrument during the entire loading period. The specimens are reinforced with 0, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% (by volume) Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber. The test results showed that the damage progress of the FRCC was characteristic for the fiber replacement ratio. As a result of analyzing the felicity ratio (FR) values, it is shown that this values can be used for evaluating the degree of FRCC damage. On the whole the felicity ratio values of FRCC are shown between 0.4 and 1.1. And, the AE kaiser effect was shown in the all FRCC specimen. In addition, the damage behavior and the microscopic fracture process of the FRCC are evaluated using the AE parameters, such as calm ratio, b-value and felicity ratio. The purpose of this reserch was to advance the state of knowledge regarding the applicability of acoustic emission as an evaluation method for FRCC.
In order to investigate the damage evolution law of rock specimens under cyclic loading, cyclic loading tests under constant loads with different amplitudes were carried out on limestone specimens with high strength and brittleness values using acoustic emission (AE) technology and the energy evolution and AE characteristics were evaluated. Based on dissipated energy density and AE counts, the damage variable of specimen was characterized and two damage evolution processes were analyzed and compared. The obtained results showed that the change of AE counts was closely related to radial deformation. Higher cyclic loading values result in more significant radial strain of limestone specimen and larger accumulative AE counts of cyclic loading segment, which indicated Felicity effect. Regarding dissipated energy density, the damage of limestone specimen was defined without considering the influence of radial deformation, which made the damage value of cyclic loading segment higher at lower amplitude loads. The damage of cyclic loading segment was increased with the magnitude of load. When dissipated energy density was applied to define damage, the damage value at unloading segment was smaller than that of AE counts. Under higher cyclic loading values, rocks show obvious damage during both loading and unloading processes. Therefore, during deep rock excavation, the damages caused by the deformation recovery of unloading rocks could not be ignored when considering the damage caused by abutment pressure.
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) cable has good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, the anchorage of CFRP cable is a big issue due to the anisotropic property of CFRP material. In this article, a high-efficient bonding anchorage with novel configuration is developed for CFRP cables. The acoustic emission (AE) technique is employed to evaluate the performance of anchorage in the fatigue test and post-fatigue ultimate bearing capacity test. The obtained AE signals are analyzed by using a combination of unsupervised K-means clustering and supervised K-nearest neighbor classification (K-NN) for quantifying the performance of the anchorage and damage evolutions. An AE feature vector (including both frequency and energy characteristics of AE signal) for clustering analysis is proposed and the under-sampling approaches are employed to regress the influence of the imbalanced classes distribution in AE dataset for improving clustering quality. The results indicate that four classes exist in AE dataset, which correspond to the shear deformation of potting compound, matrix cracking, fiber-matrix debonding and fiber fracture in CFRP bars. The AE intensity released by the deformation of potting compound is very slight during the whole loading process and no obvious premature damage observed in CFRP bars aroused by anchorage effect at relative low stress level, indicating the anchorage configuration in this study is reliable.

Acoustic emission (AE) is one of the most powerful techniques for detecting damages and identify damage location during operations. However, in case of the source location technique, there is some limitation in conventional AE technology, because it strongly depends on wave speed in the corresponding structures having heterogeneous composite materials. A compressed natural gas(CNG) pressure vessel is usually made of carbon fiber composite outside of vessel for the purpose of strengthening. In this type of composite material, locating impact damage sources exactly using conventional time arrival method is difficult. To overcome this limitation, this study applied the previously developed Contour D/B map technique to four types of CNG storage tanks to identify the source location of damages caused by external shock. The results of the identification of the source location for different types were compared.

This study is damage evaluation for CNG fuel tank during the burst test through the analysis of acoustic emission signals. Kaiser effect until the pressure 420 bar appears, but More than 420 bar by the creep effect appears significantly damaged vessels, and 480 bar pressure, the Kaiser effect of the rising phase was missing. Resonant transducer at 540 bar than 480 bar decreased activity such as energy and count Continually, but increased wideband transducer. In addition, through the rise time or frequency analysis of composite pressure vessels in order to observe the damage mechanisms wideband transducer is more effective than resonant transducer.
