In this study, the flap fatigue test of a 48 m long wind turbine blade was performed for 1 million cycles to evaluate the characteristics of acoustic emission signals generated from fatigue damage of the wind blades. As the number of hits and total energy continued to increase during the first 0.6 million cycles, blade damage was constant. The rise-time result showed that the major aspects of damage were initiation and propagation of matrix cracks. In addition, the signal analysis of each channel showed that the most seriously damaged sections were the joint between the skin and spar, 20 m from the connection, and the spot of actual damage was observable by visual inspection. It turned out that the event source location was related to the change in each channel's total energy. It is expected that these findings will be useful for the optimal design of wind turbine blades.
Nondestructive damage sensitivity of carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their adding contents was investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by acoustic emission (AE), which was correlated to the change in electrical resistance, ΔR under double-matrix composites (DMC) test. Stress sensing on carbon nanocomposites was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic loading. At the same volume fraction, the damage sensitivity for fiber fracture, matrix deformation and stress sensing were highest for CNT/epoxy composite, whereas for CB/epoxy composite they were the lowest among three carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Damage sensitivity was correlated with morphological observation of carbon nanocomposites. Homogeneous dispersion among CNMs could be keying parameters for better damage monitoring. In this study, damage sensing of carbon nanocomposites could be evaluated well nondestructively by the electrical resistance measurement with AE.
Fiber-reinforced composites are extensively used in electronic, ship and aerospace applications due to their high strength and high toughess. In these applications, they are often subjected to localized heat damage due to various sources. In order to ensure their reliability, it is important to predict their residual properties using nondestructive evaluation thchniques. Fabric fiber composite specimens were manufactured with six layers of the glass-fiber prepreg and the carbon-fiber prepreg, respectively. The specimens were subjected to a localized heat damage using a heated copper tip with a diameter of 10mm at 35$0^{\circ}C$(CFRP) and 30$0^{\circ}C$(GFRP), respectively. The specimens were then subjected to tension tests while acoustic emission (AE) activities of specimens were collected. The AE activity of all specimens showed three types of distinct frequency regions. Those are matrix cracking, failure of the fiber/matrix interface and fiber breakage.

Responses of ultrasonic back scattered energy and AE (Acoustic Emission) characteristics related to the progressive damage of $[0/90-{2}]_s$ and $[0/90-{4}]_s$ crossply laminates were studied. It was found that the ultrasonic backscattered energy was sensitive to the matrix cracking but not sensitive to other failure mechanisms. However, AE was proved to be sensitive to matrix cracking as well as other failure mechanisms.AE signals were analyzed by investigating the amplitude and number of counts per event for corresponding applied strain. Loading and unloading tests were conducted separately. AE results showed Kaiser effect in the crossply composite laminates and ultrasonic results supported the AE results.
The carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) have been widely used in aircraft and spacecraft structures as well as sports goods because it has high specific strength, high specific stiffness and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Machining of CFRP poses problems not frequently seen for metals due to the nonhomogeneity, anisotropy, and abrasive characteristics of CFRP. Delamination is a common problem faced while drilling holes in CFRP using conventional drilling. Therefore, AE characteristics related to drilling damage process of unidirectional and [0/90/]s crossply laminate composite was studied. Also drilling damage like the delamination was observed by video camera in real time monitoring technique. From the results, we basically found the relationships between the delamination from drilling and AE characteristics for CFRP composites.

Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) laminates made of nano-particle-coated carbon fibers and damaged by a simulated lightning strike were tested under compression-after-impact(CAI) mode, during which the damage progress due to compressive loading has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE). The impact damage was induced not by mechanical loading but by a simulated lightning strike. Conductive nano-particles were coated directly on the fibers, from which CFRP coupons were made. The coupon were subjected to the strikes with a high voltage/current impulse of 10~40 kA within a few ${\mu}s$. The effects of nano-particle coating and the degree of damage induced by the simulated lightning strikes on AE activities were examined, and the relationship between the compressive residual strength and AE behavior has been evaluated in terms of AE event counts and the onset of AE activity with the compressive loading. The degree of impact damage was also measured in terms of damage area by using ultrasonic C-scan images. The assessment during the CAI tests of damaged CFRP showed that AE monitoring appeared to be useful to differentiate the degree of damage hence the mechanical integrity of composite structures damaged by lightning strikes.

Concrete is an inhomogeneous material consisting of larger aggregates and sand embedded in a cement paste matrix. In this study, an acoustic emission technique has been used to clarify the microscope failure mechanisms of concrete under three point bending test. AE source location has also been done to monitor the activities of internal damage and the progress of microscopic failure path during the loading. The relationship between AE characteristic and microscopic and microscopic failure mechanism is discussed.

Small cracks or chips of a product appear very frequently in the course of continuous production of an automatic press process system. These phenomena became the cause of not only defective product but also damage of a press mold. In order to solve this problem AE(Acoustic emission) system was introduced. AE system was expected to be very effective to real time detection of the defective product and for the prevention of the damage in the press molds In this study, for the pick and analysis of AE signals generated from the press process, AE sensors/pre-amplifier/analysis and processing board were used as frequently found in the other similar cases. For the analysis and processing the AE signals picked in real time from the normal or the detective products, specialized software called AE-win(software for processing AE signal from Physical Acoustics Corporation) was used. As a result of this work it was conformed that intensity and shape of the various AE signals differ depending on the weight of the press and thickness of sheet and process type.
This paper described analysis of acoustic emission parameter for the damage evaluation of type II vehicle fuel tank during fracture test. The observation of Kaiser effect, Felicity effect and creep effect is the means of damage evaluation method. It is possible to evaluate tank damage by the ratio of hit of over 60 dB and total hit. Damage mechanism of pressure tank can be estimated by analysis of average rise time, average amplitude.

The aim of this study was to examine the emission of acoustic signals from three reinforced concrete beams at cracking and failure processes. Acoustic emission(AE) characteristics of reinforced concrete beams were investigated during the entire loading period. AE technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of damage process and the failure mechanism of reinforced concrete beam with natural and recycled aggregates. The influences of different aggregate in concrete on AE characteristics were investigated as well.
