A new concept of piezoelectric smart panels for noise reduction in wide band frequencies is proposed and their possibility is experimentally investigated. The proposed panels are based on active and passive methods. They use piezoelectric smart structure technology for active noise reduction at low band frequencies and passive sound absorbing materials for mid-range of noise frequencies. To prove the concept of piezoelectric smart panels, an acoustic measurement experiment was performed. The smart panels exhibit a good noise reduction in middle and high frequency ranges due to the mass effects of absorbing materials or/and the air gap. The use of piezoelectric smart panel renders noise reduction large at resonance frequency. Another concept of smart panel that uses piezoelectric damping is experimentally investigated. Since piezoelectric dampings can reduce vibration and noise at resonance frequencies with simple shunt circuit, they have merits in terms of economy and simplicity. Dissipated energy method(DEM) is adopted to tune the shunt circuit precisely in piezoelectric dampings. Noise reduction at multiple resonance frequencies is demonstrated.
Recently, wireless power transfer technology is ready to be commercialized in consumer electronics. It draws attention of not only experts but also public because of its convenience and huge market. However, previous technologies such as magnetic resonance and induction coupling have limited applications because of its short transfer distance compared to device size and magnetic intensity limitation for the safety of body exposure. As an alternative, ultrasonic wireless power transfer technology is proposed. The ultrasonic wireless power transfer system is composed of transmitter which converts electrical energy to ultrasonic energy and receiver which converts the ultrasonic energy to the electrical energy again. This paper is focused on the development of high energy conversion efficiency of ultrasonic transmitter. Optimal transfer frequency is calculated based on the acoustic radiation and damping effect. The transmitter is designed through numerical analysis, and is manufactured to match the optimal transfer frequency with the size of 100mm diameter, 12.2 mm thickness plate. The energy conversion efficiency of about 13.6% at 2m distance is obtained, experimentally. This result is quite high considered with the device size and the power transfer distance.
In the present paper, the effects of combustion instability on flow structure and flame dynamic with the configurations of burner exit in a model gas turbine combustor are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES). A G-equation flamelet model is employed to simulate the unsteady flame behavior. As a result of mean flow field, the change of divergent half angle(${\alpha}$) at burner exit results in variations in the size and shape of the central toroidal recirculation(CTRZ) as well as flame length by changing corner recirculation zone(CRZ). The case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ show smaller size and upstream location of CTRZ than that of $90^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ by the development of higher swirl velocity. The flame length in the case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ is the most shortest, while that in the case of ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ is the longest by the decrease of effective reactive area with the absence of CRZ. Through the analysis of pressure fluctuation, it is identified that the case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ shows the most largest damping effect of pressure oscillation in all configurations and brings in the noise reduction of 2.97dB, comparing with that of ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ having the largest pressure oscillation. These reasons are discussed in detail through the analysis of unsteady phenomena about recirculation zone and flame surface. Finally the effects of flame-acoustic interaction are evaluated using local Rayleigh parameter.
A method of identifying structural parameters such as stiffness and damping coefficients at interfacial points of vibro-acoustic systems is suggested using an optimization technique. To identify the parameters using a numerical optimization algorithm, cost functions are defined. The cost function should be zero at the correct parameter values. To minimize the cost functions using an optimization technique, a design sensitivity analysis procedure is developed in the framework of the multi-domain FRF-based substructuring method. As a numerical example, a ladder-like structure problem is introduced. With known parameter values and different initial guesses of the parameters, convergence characteristics to the exact value are compared for the three cost functions. Investigating the contours of the cost functions, we find the first cost function has the largest convergent region to the correct value. As another practical problem, stiffnesses of engine mounts and bushings in a passenger car are identified. The numerical examples show that the proposed method is efficient and accurate even when applied to realistic problems.
In this paper, the measured electrical resistance method is proposed to analyze the ramp-tab contact during the load/unload (L/UL) process. Since this method supplies the voltage change due to the resistance change, we can easily and conveniently identify the ramp-tab contact from the acoustic emission (AE) signal. At first, we carefully deposit the conductive material on the surface of the conventional ramp by sputtering method. The ratio frequency (RF) magnetron co-sputtering system is applied to accomplish the deposited double-layers on the ramp surface. One layer is the stainless steel for the conductive layer and the other is the titanium layer for the cohesive function between the ramp surface and the stainless steel layer. In order to guarantee the stiffness and damping properties of the original ramp, the deposited conductive layer is intended to have very thin thickness. After integration the proposed ramp device into the L/UL system and networking the electrical resistance circuit, the L/UL performance is experimentally evaluated by comparing the measured electrical resistance signal and AE signal.
Porous metals are called as a new material of 21th century because they show not only extremely low density, but also novel physical, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and acoustic properties. Since the late in the 1990's, considerable progress has been made in the production technologies of many kinds of porous metals such as aluminum, titanium, nickel, copper, stainless steel, etc. The commercial applications of porous metals have been increased in the field of light weight structures, sound absorption, mechanical damping, bio-materials, thermal management for heat exchanger and heat sink. Especially, the porous metals are promising in automotive applications for light-weighting body sheets and various structural components due to the good relation between weight and stiffness. This paper reviews the recent progress of production techniques using molten metal bubbling, metal foaming, gas expansion, hollow sphere structure, unidirectional solidification, etc, which have been commercialized or under developing, and finally introduces several case studies on the potential applications of porous metals in the area of heat sink, automotive pannel, cathod for Ni-MH battery, golf putter and medical implant.

Experimental study was carried out in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor showing features of combustion instabilities. Flame structure and heat release rates were obtained from OH emission spectroscopy. Qualitative comparisons were made between line-integrated OH chemiluminescence image and Abel-transformed one. Local Rayleigh index distributions were also examined. Mean temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature fluctuations were measured by coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). To see the periodic behavior of oscillating flames, phase-resolved measurements were performed with respect to the pressure wave in the combustor. Results on system damping and driving characteristics were provided as a function of equivalence ratio. It also could be observed that phase resolved temperatures have been changed in a well-defined manner, while its difference between maximum and minimum reached up to 280K. These results would be expected to play an important role in better understanding of driving mechanisms and thermo-acoustic interactions.
An indoor package air-conditioner (PAC) has complex noise sources such as motor noise and fluid noise caused by the fan motor, heat transfer and shroud. Sound intensity techniques and ODS(Operational deflection shape) techniques are applied to identify the noise characteristics of an indoor air-conditioner's cabinet. The sound intensity is used to visualize the noise source locations. and the ODS to visualize the vibration pattern and to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the noise source. Acoustic intensity and operational deflection distribution are obtained in space domains as well as frequency domains. Using the visual information of source locations and its dynamic characteristics, the damping patch is applied to reduce structure borne noise in the cabinet. As a result, the noise emitted by the cabinet is reduced by 5dB.
