The attenuation of the fundamental non-torsional modes that propagate down buried steel water pipes has been studied. The mode shapes, mode attenuation due to leakage into the surrounding medium and the scattering of the modes as they interact with pipe joints and fittings have been investigated. In the low frequency region the mode predicted to dominate over significant propagation distances approximates a plane wave in the water within pipe. The established acoustic technique used to locate leaks in buried steel water pipes assumes that leak noise propagates as a single non-dispersive mode at a velocity related to the low frequency asymptote of this water borne mode.
Coastal water including estuaries has distinctive environmental characteristics where sediments are transported and deposited by flowing river water, providing an environment in which fluid mud layers can be formed. Acoustic method is mostly used to detect or monitor the fluid mud layer. However, since sound propagating in this layer suffers severe attenuation, it is important to estimate the accurate attenuation coefficient for various concentrations of fluid mud layer for the successful use of the acoustic method. In this paper, measurement results of attenuation coefficient for 3.5, 5, and 7.5 MHz ultrasounds were presented. The measurements were made in a small-size water tank in which suspended sediment samples with various sediment concentrations were formed using kaolinite powder. The results were compared to the model predictions obtained by attenuation coefficient model in which the mean grain size (called as Mass-median-diameter, D50) was used as input parameter. There were reasonable agreements between measured attenuation coefficients and model outputs predicted using the particle range of D50 ${\pm}20%$. The comparison results imply that although the suspended sediments consist of various-sized particles, sound attenuation might be greatly influenced by amount of particle with a size which has a larger attenuation than that of any particle in the suspended sediments for the frequency used.
The aim of the work described in this paper is to develop a complex underground acoustic system which detects and localizes the origin of an underground hammering sound using an array of hydrophones located about loom underground. Three different methods for the sound localization will be presented, a time-delay method, a power-attenuation method and a hybrid method. In the time-delay method, the cross correlation of the signals received from the way of sensors is used to calculate the time delays between those signals. In the power-attenuation method, the powers of the received signals provide a measure of the distances of the source from the sensors. In the hybrid method, both informations of time-delays and power-ratios are coupled together to produce better performance of position estimation. A new acoustic imaging technique has been developed for improving the hybrid method. For each method the sound localization is carried out in three dimensions underground. The minimum distance between the true and estimated origins of the source is 28 m for a search area of radius 250m.
Effects of positions of transducers and of distances between transducers on attenuation properties of active noise control systems is investigated via computer simulations. Computer simulations show that the acoustic monopole and dipole systems for duct noise attenuation are sensitive to variations of the transducer location.

Biot's theory and a modified Biot-Attenborough (MBA) model are applied to predict the dependences of acoustic characteristics on frequency and porosity in cancellous bone. The phase velocity and the attenuation coefficient predicted by both theories are compared with previous in vitro experimental measurements in terms of the mixed, the fast, and the slow waves. Biot's theory successfully predicts the dependences of phase velocity on frequency and porosity in cancellous bone, whereas a significant discrepancy is observed between predicted and measured attenuation coefficients. The MBA model is consistent with reported measurements for both dependences of phase velocity and attenuation coefficient on frequency and porosity. Based on the theoretical predictions from the MBA model, it is suggested that the attenuation coefficient of the mixed wave is dominated by the fast wave in the low-porosity region while it is dominated by the slow wave in the high-porosity region. This provides a qualitative explanation for the nonlinear relationship of attenuation of the mixed wave with porosity in cancellous bone.

Damage Profess of CFRP laminates under monotonic tensile test was characterized by the correlation between Acoustic Emission(AE) and Ultrasonic Test(UT). The amplitude distribution of AE signal from a specimens is an aid to the determination of the extent of the different fracture mechanism such as matrix crack, debonding, fiber pullout and fiber fracture as load is increased. In addtion, the characteristics of ultrasonic amplitude attenuation are useful lot analysis of the different type of fracture mechanism. Different orientation of carbon fiber reinforced plastic specimens were used to investigate the AE amplitude range and ultrasonic amplitude attenuation. Finally, loading-unloading tests were carried out to check Felicity effect. During the tests, ultrasonic amplitude attenuation was investigated at the same time and compared with AE parameters. The result showed that two parameters of both AE and UT could be effectively used for analysis of fracture mechanism in CFRP laminates.
Active control of sound radiation(using active structural acoustic control) from a vibrating rectangular plate by a steady-state harmonic point force disturbance is experimentally studied. Control structural input are achieved by two piezoceramic actuators bonded to the surface of the panel. Two accelerometers are implemented as error sensors. Estimated radiated sound signals using vibro-acoustic path transfer function are used as error signals. The vibro-acoustic path transfer function represents system between accelerometers and microphones. The control approach are based on a multi-channel filtered-x LMS algorithm. The results demonstrate that attenuation of sound levels of 3dB, 13dB are achieved.

This research investigates the feasibility of ultrasonic microscope for nondestructive assessment of thermal degradation in artificially aged commercial Co-base superalloy, FSX414. This alloy has been used for high temperature structure applications such as stationary gas turbine blade and nozzle chamber in fossil plant. Microstructural change was found that the fine carbides became coarser and spheroidized in matrix as aging time increased. The leaky surface acoustic wave velocity gradually decreases by a maximum of 4.7% with increasing aging time up to 4,000hours. However, the longitudinal wave velocity has a little change. Also, it has a good correlation between leaky surface acoustic wave velocity and Vickers hardness. Consequently, LSAW can be used to examine the degree of degradation in thermally aged Co-base superalloy.

In this paper, we introduce system and channel modeling for an underwater ad hoc acoustic network with n regularly located nodes, and then analyze capacity scaling laws based on the model. A narrow-band model is assumed where the carrier frequency is allowed to scale as a function of n. In the network, we characterize in attenuation parameter that depends on the frequency scaling as well as the transmission distance. A cut-set upper bound on the throughput scaling is then derived in extended networks having unit node density. Our result indicates that the upper bound is inversely proportional to the attenuation parameter, thus resulting in a power-limited network. Furthermore, we describe an achievable scheme based on the simple nearest-neighbor multi-hop (MH) transmission. It is shown under extended networks that the MH scheme is order-optimal for all the operating regimes expressed as functions of the attenuation parameter.
