Combustion instability is a major issue in design of gas turbine combustors for efficient operation with low emissions. Combustion instability is induced by the interaction of the unsteady heat release of the combustion process and the change in the acoustic pressure in the combustion chamber. In an effort to develop a technique to predict self-excited combustion instability of gas turbine combustors, a new stability analysis method based on the transfer matrix method is developed. The method views the combustion system as a one-dimensional acoustic system with a side branch and describes the heat source as the input to the system. This approach makes it possible to use not only the advantages of the transfer matrix method but also well established classic control theories. The approach is applied to a gas turbine combustion system, which shows the validity and effectiveness of the approach.
The calculation of the transmission loss of the silencers with complicated internal structures by the conventional BEM combined with the transfer matrix method is incorrect at best or impossible for 3-dimensional silencers due to its inherent plane wave assumption. On this consideration, we propose an efficient practical means to formulate algebraic overall condensed acoustic equations for the whole acoustic structure, where particle velocities on the domain interface boundaries are unknowns, and the solutions are used later to compute the overall transfer matrix elements, based on the multi-domain BEM data. The transmission loss estimation by the proposed method is tested by comparison with the experimental one on an air suction silencer with perforated internal structures installed in air compressors. The method shows its viability by presenting the reasonably consistent anticipation of the experimental result.

The present article discusses about the measurement techniques of acoustic impedance that becomes one of the important acoustic characteristics of various boundaries found inside of propulsion systems. Acoustic characteristics including acoustic impedance and reflection coefficient can be often assessed and estimated by use of the two-microphone method. Theoretical expressions of acoustic impedance and reflection coefficient measured in an impedance tube are presented for both cases with mean flow and without flow, and the practical application of the method through calibration is also provided. The acoustic impedance and the reflection coefficient are related with axial locations of microphones, thermodynamic characteristics of gas inside, and the transfer function between the pressure wave measurements at multiple locations.
This paper proposes a feasible and effective method for measuring the mechanical-acoustic transfer function by the application of equivalent area and velocity transfer function, a manifestation of the vibro-acoustical reciprocity principle. On the contrary to the volume velocity used in traditional method, the equivalent area is a peculiar raidation characteristics of sound sources and not influenced by any input signal for driving sound source. This invariant property of equivalent area can get rid of boresome works to measure the volume velocity of a sound source every time the driving signal is changed. Moreover, this method has a remarkable advantage to use a general loudspeaker as an accoustic exciter without the assumption of point source and can be applied to all kinds of sound sources even if they are not omni-directional sources.

In this paper, a beamforming technique is introduced to measure the acoustic impedance at both normal and oblique incidence in a free field. The acoustic impedance is obtained by separating incident and reflected signals using the adaptive nulling method which is one of the various beamforming algorithms. To obtain better results, pressure vector commonly used in array signal processing is replaced with the transfer function vector between each microphone and the white Gaussian noise is suppressed by a wavelet shrinkage technique. The experiments conducted in a semi-anechoic room show that the proposed method is efficient and accurate in measuring the acoustic impedance of sound absorbing materials under a free field condition.
Recently, it is increased to adopt inverter system to household electrical appliances, especially in ai conditioner and refrigerator. Inverter system is adopted for improving the efficiency. But Inverter system makes acoustic noise caused by switching frequency. In household electrical appliace, it is important to reduce acoustic noise. And in some cases it is possible to magnify the acoustic noise caused by switching, by system which may have different transfer characteristic. In this paper, random PWM method was adopted in inverter refrigerator using 8 bit microprocesso. We found useful PWM frequency and adoptation method.
For a single stage two cylinder rotary compressor, an analytical study has been made on the discharge gas pulsation. Discharge system of the twin rotary compressor consists of lower and upper mufflers and connecting passage holes between them, and cavities on both sides of the motor and passages between them. Acoustic modeling for the discharge system by transfer matrix method gives acoustic impedances at discharge valves so that gas pulsation at the valve sections can be obtained from discharge mass velocity. Since the mass velocity and the pressure pulsation at the valves are affected by each other, iteration should be made for convergence. Gas pulsations at other sections can also be calculated by using transfer matrix.
The paper describes measurement techniques for an acoustic transfer characteristic of ship's bridge stimulated by a whistle sound The response sounds, according to the opening-shutting conditions of bridge doors for Training Ship ‘SAENURI’, are measured by B&K 2260D equipment, and then the frequency responses are extracted by B&K 7830 software. To evaluate the measured transfer characteristic, the 128th order FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filters, containing the different frequency characteristics, are constructed based on the frequency sampling-based design method Using evaluation indexes with six scales, psychological assessments by five subjects are carried out with test sounds which are obtained from convolving the source signal with FIR filters. As results of tests, the test sounds gives $A_S$ 3.3∼4.7 which means the psychological sense of ‘it is almost similar sound as original ones in a real world’, and thus it is clearly seen that the proposed method can be used for the measurement of an acoustic transfer characteristic of ship’s bridge.

For a discharge system of rotary compressor, analytical investigation on the discharge gas pulsation has been carried out. With the aid of four pole theory, acoustic impedance of the discharge system composed of muffler and cavities on both sides of motor with gas passages between them can be calculated using discrete acoustic elements described by transfer matrices, yielding the relationship between discharge mass flow rate and gas pulsation at the discharge port. This method of predicting the gas pulsation was validated by measurement data. Effects of change in discharge muffler geometries on the gas pulsation also were investigated, demonstrating that this method can be used for muffler design.
