  • The numerous varieties of coffee beans contain a wide range prices and qualities. While the varieties of green coffee beans can generally be distinguished by their appearance, this visual criterion is impossible after the roasting process. Therefore, we need to develop a classification method or device. In this study, the potential of a new type of electronic nose, fast gas chromatography based on a surface acoustic wave sensor(SAW), was evaluated for the classification of origins and blended commercial brands in roasted coffee beans. Eight blended commercial brands and the origins of four similarly roasted ground coffee beans(with no significant difference of color) were rapidly(90 sec/sample) classified. The reproductive results were easily understandable over the aroma image pattern by $VaporPrint^{TM}$. In conclusion, GC-SAW electronic nose can be applied to the classification of origins and commercial brands in roasted ground coffee beans and to e evaluation of the similarities and differences of volatile pattern between samples.

  • The helicopter development technology is improved by the increasing of computing power and advanced test facilities. The increasing efficiency of fuel consuming by the developing of improved lift-to-drag rotor system is the major issue, the noise reduction for ecology(civil area) and increase of survivability to reduce noise detection(battlefield) also are important. This investigation shows the helicopter external noise flight test methods, conventional military helicopter's(UH-60) experimental results and the numerical modeling method for aero-acoustic of rotor blade and the result of CAA(Computational Aero-Acoustic) for main rotor blade.

  • Breeding bird surveys provide the reference information for understanding bird community structure and function in the ecosystem and conserving biodiversity. Recent rapid change of biodiversity due to climate change and other factors has made it necessary to utilize acoustic sensors for accuracy and spatial expansion of forest bird survey data and for time-series monitoring of forest birds. The objective of this study is to investigate the possibility of using acoustic recording sensor to evaluate the diversity of forest birds at breeding season by comparing and analyzing the recorded data of bird songs and field bird survey data. We conducted the site survey and recording in 186 points in 48 areas of 4 regions of Gombaeryeong and Jochimryeong around Jeombongsan Mountain and Jugryeong and Gochiryeong around Sobaeksan Mountain from May 2nd to 16th in 2013. The analysis of the correlation between the recording result and Bird Community Index based on the field survey showed that the number of bird species, population, and the number of bird songs by recording was significantly correlated to the number of species and population by field survey. Moreover, the number of bird species and the number of bird songs by recording showed a significant correlation to species diversity and species richness but no or low significant correlation to species evenness by the field study (observation and listing in parallel). As a result, it was possible to check species composition and species diversity of bird communities by analyzing acoustic recording data on the field. The acoustic recordings of bird songs in the breeding period were more reliable than the non-breeding period in the correlation of recording result and species diversity and for utilization.

  • Today, interest in soundscape idea is growing according to recognize the surrounding sounds as design target and to introduce them into environmental spaces positively. The word "soundscape" proposed by Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer is now very popular in the world. So various soundscape designs based on soundscape idea are carried on worldwide for acoustic ecology. Also in Korea, several researchers are carrying on studies about the soundscape, but basic concepts behind soundscape design are insufficiently defined and studied. In that sense, this study aims to review and to arrange the concept of soundscape Idea and soundscape desgn systematically. Through investigation of literature concerning soundscape study, the backgrounds and characteristics about soundscape idea were reviewed and concepts of soundscape design were arranged.

  • An acoustic method for discriminating plankton from fish, in Lake Dom Helvecio of Brazil, is developed. The flow of data from this method is comprised of time varied threshold (TVT), dilation filter, bitmap and mask functions. The TVT can, of itself, precisely explain how to select an appropriate value. The final results of the echogram, which only shows plankton by masking fish signals, is used to examine the acoustic density of plankton by depth and time. The results indicate that the acoustic density of the plankton is at a depth of between 5m to 15m, its density is especially high at 10m to 15m. The results of the acoustic density of plankton by time indicate that May 7 is higher in density than May 8. Future study plans include the use of net samples, environmental datasets to identify the abundance and ecology described by the Chaoborus spp. from other species.

  • Acoustics is widely used in marine and inland fisheries research and management. In June 2002 ICES (Council for the Exploration of the Sea) held a symposium titled “Acoustics in Fisheries and Aquatic Ecology” in Montpellier, France. There were several topics to be presented such as ecology marine waters, combination of methods, target strength (TS) method and results, TS modeling, survey design, behavior, avoidance, technology, and identification. • This study examines the infant crying acoustic characteristics likely to arouse negative emotions and distress in mothers. We used samples of infant crying from three situations (hunger, pain, and the mother's absence) in six healthy infants over six months. We played the recordings of infants crying to 90 mothers in the care of infants and had them self-evaluate emotions and feelings. In addition, the sounds were analyzed acoustically through a CSL4400 to analyze frequency, energy, total expiratory time, and the number of the expirations. In this study, cries due to pain and the absence of the mother caused more unpleasant emotions and irritation in comparison to the infant sounds of hunger. In particular, crying from the absence of the mother caused the most distress. An analysis of these sounds showed that crying in the situations of pain and the absence of the mother were strong in frequency, high energy, and prolonged. These results suggest a relation between infant crying acoustical characteristics and the feelings of distress by the mother.

  • In this study, we estimated the distribution density of giant jellyfish in coastal waters of Korea in 2023 and compared the occurrence of giant jellyfish over four years. In May, the giant jellyfish were mainly distributed in the waters of the Yangtze River outflow, and in July, they were highly distributed in the west of Jeju Island and near the south coast of Korea. In addition, when comparing the distribution densities of giant jellyfish in Korea over four years, both acoustic and sighting surveys showed that the highest density of jellyfish occurred in 2021.
