  • In this study, two types of mobile robotic systems using NDT (Non-destructive testing) method are developed for automatic diagnosis of the boiler tubes and large size pipelines. The developed mobile robots crawl the outer surface of the tubes or pipelines and detect in-pipe defects such as pinholes, cracks and thickness reduction by corrosion and/or erosion using EMAT (Electro-magnetic Acoustic Transducer). Automation of fault detection by means of mobile robotic systems for these large-scale structures helps to prevent significant troubles without danger of human beings under harmful environment.

  • In order to distinguish fault electric motors automatically in real time. an intelligent diagnosis technique may be required. This paper presents an automatic fault detection system for electric motors by using their acoustic noises. Time signals of each candidate motor were measured in an anechoic chamber for further analysis. Spectral analysis was first carried out and they showed that two typical types of fault motors could be successfully distinguished in the frequency domain; bearing faults and scratches. Unlike the trend of normal motors that shows only a single dominant peak at around 2000 ㎐, several peaks are bunched together in bearing fault motors. On the other hand, large frequency noises at around 6500 ㎐ are newly arisen in scratchy fault motors. However, the processing time for spectral analysis was rather long for a real time application in production lines. Thus, a number of band-pass filters were used in the time domain instead for a real time application. Before applying filters, the bands of filters were set from the information of spectral analysis. By applying a set of band-pass filters, the RMS values of each filtered signal were calculated, and thus the normal and damaged motors could be successfully distinguished.

  • Induction motors are the workhorse of our industry because of their versatility and robustness. The diagnosis of mechanical load and power transmission system failures is usually carried out through mechanical signals such as vibration signatures, acoustic emissions, motor speed envelope. The motor faults including mechanical rotor imbalances, broken rotor bar, bearing failure and eccentricities problems are reflected in electric, electromagnetic and mechanical quantities. The recent research has been directed toward electrical monitoring of the motor with emphasis on inspecting the stator current of the motor, The stator current spectrum has been widely used for fault detection in induction motor systems. The motor current signature analysis is the useful technique to assess machine electrical condition. This paper describes the motor condition detected by the current signatures Paralleled with vibration signatures analysis of induction motors with the roller bearing and the journal bearing type for large vertical pumps in power plant as examples to discuss for motor fault detection and diagnosis.

  • Purpose: Renal stones are common and typically arise within the collecting system. The renal sinus are contains the collection system, the renal vessels, lymphatcs, fat, and fibrous tissue. Because of the compression of all the large echoes in signal processing, the echo from the renal stone generally cannot be distinguished from large echoes emanating from normal structures of the renal sinus. Use of ultrasonography has been difficult for detecting small renal stone without posterior shadowing and chemical composition of stone. The aim of study was measuring for posterior acoustic shadowing to a stone for various scan parameter and it examines a help in renal stone diagnosis. Material & Methods: The stone was place on sponge examined in a water bath with a 3.5MHz or 7.5MHz transducer(LOGIQ 400, USA). First, tested a variety of gain. Second, tested a variety of dynamic range. Third, tested a variety of focal zone. Fourth, measuring of the echo level for low and high frequency for depth. Results: 1) Average echo level was 98 for low total gain(10 dB) and was 142 for high total gain(40 dB). Posterior acoustic shadowing of renal stone was clear for low gain. 2) Average echo level was 129 for low dynamic range(42 dB) and was 101 for high dynamic range(72 dB). Posterior acoustic shadowing of renal stone was clear for high dynamic range. 3) When stone is in focal zone of transducer, definite posterior acoustic shadow is identified. 4) Stone was clear appeared for high frequency(7.5 MHz) than low frequency(3.5 MHz) and it is not distorted. Conclusion: The demonstration of an posterior acoustic shadow of renal stone dependents on several technical factors such as gain, dynamic range, focus, and frequency. This various factors are a help in renal stone diagnosis.

  • This paper proposes a loose part monitoring system (LPMS) design with a signal processing method based on fuzzy logic. Considering fuzzy characteristics of metallic impact waveform due to not only interferences from various types of noises in an operating nuclear power plant but also complex wave propagation paths within a monitored mechanical structure, the proposed LPMS design incorporates the comprehensive relation among impact signal features in the fuzzy rule bases for the purposes of alarm discrimination and impact diagnosis improvement. The impact signal features for the fuzzy rule bases include the rising time, the falling time, and the peak voltage values of the impact signal envelopes. Fuzzy inference results based on the fuzzy membership values of these impact signal features determine the confidence level data for each signal feature. The total integrated confidence level data is used for alarm discrimination and impact diagnosis purposes. Through the perpormance test of the proposed LPMS with mock-up structures and instrumentation facility, test results show that the system is effective in diagnosis of the loose part impact event(i.e., the evaluation of possible impacted area and degree of impact magnitude) as well as in suppressing false alarm generation.

  • Trigeminal neuralgia is defined as "a sudden, usually unilateral, brief stabbing recurrent pain in the distribution of one or more branches of the fifth cranial nerve" by the International Association for the Study of Pain(IASP). Trigeminal neuralgia is classified as an idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia with no apparent cause and a symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia which is caused by a structural lesion such as brain tumor. Over 80% of the tumors are meningioma, acoustic neuroma, and epidermoid tumors. Symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia can not be excluded even if old-aged patient does not have abnormal neurologic sign and symptom, and good response to pharmacotherapy. Therefore, initial examinations such as MRI or CT are essential to exclude symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia. When compared with CT, MRI, especially gadolinium enhanced MRI, has an increased sensitivity in the detection of intracranial lesions. The most effective medical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine. The most common side effects of carbamazepine include drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, nausea, anorexia. Hepatotoxicity, bone marrow depression are the most feared side effect of carbamazepine therapy but occurs rarely. It require periodic complete blood cell counts as well as hepatic and renal function tests. It has been recommended that complete blood cell counts is done every 2 weeks for the first 2months and then quaterly thereafter. Oxcarbazepine can be used if neutropenia occurs.

  • Purpose: Nasal bone fractures are often classified as minor injury. However, the incidence of posttraumatic nasal deformity remains alarmingly high. It is because of unnoticed septal fracture. This study was conducted to determine the necessity of septoplasty for patients with nasal bone fracture accompanying grade I septal fractures. Methods: Among 105 patients with nasal bone fractures, 52 who had grade I septal fracture were diagnosed based on physical examination and computed tomography. Patients' age ranged from 14 to 65 years (mean 29.25 years), and 35 were male and 17 female. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to surgical treatment methods: patients who underwent closed reduction only (group 1, n=28) and those who underwent simultaneous closed reduction and septoplasty (group 2, n=24). The treatment outcomes were evaluated by comparing changes in nasal airway volume measured by acoustic rhinometry before the surgery, 3 months and 6 months after the surgery according to the timing of surgical repair and surgical treatment methods. Results: Nasal airway volume increased after the surgery by 17.8% in 3 months after the surgery, 25.2% in 6 months in group 1 and by 22.7% in 3 months, 35.8% in 6 months in group 2. The increase in airway volume after the surgery by 26.3% in 3 months after the surgery, 34.2% in 6 months after the surgery in operation within 1 week after trauma and by 12.1% in 3 months, 22.2% in 6 months after the operation later 1 week after trauma. The difference was statistically significant. Three patients in group 1 complained of intermittent nasal obstruction, two of whom showed a decrease in nasal airway volume by acoustic rhinometry. Conclusion: Most patients with nasal bone fractures accompanying grade I septal fractures have been treated with closed reduction in clinical settings. However, the results of this study suggest that septoplasty be performed after a correct diagnosis of septal fracture is made through comprehensive physical examination and computed tomography. Septoplasty is important to obtain more favorable outcomes and reduce complication.

  • The objectives of this Paper is to implement a diagnostic classifier of differential laryngeal diseases from acoustic signals acquired in a noisy room. For this Purpose, the voice signals of the vowel /a/ were collected from Patients in a soundproof chamber and got mixed with noise. Then, the acoustic Parameters were analyzed, and hierarchical neural networks were applied to the data classification. The classifier had a structure of five-step hierarchical neural networks. The first neural network classified the group into normal and benign or malign laryngeal disease cases. The second network classified the group into normal or benign laryngeal disease cases The following network distinguished polyp. nodule. Palsy from the benign laryngeal cases. Glottic cancer cases were discriminated into T1, T2. T3, T4 by the fourth and fifth networks All the neural networks were based on multilayer perceptron model which classified non-linear Patterns effectively and learned by an error back-propagation algorithm. We chose some acoustic Parameters for classification by investigating the distribution of laryngeal diseases and Pilot classification results of those Parameters derived from MDVP. The classifier was tested by using the chosen parameters to find the optimum ones. Then the networks were improved by including such Pre-Processing steps as linear and z-score transformation. Results showed that 90% of T1, 100% of T2-4 were correctly distinguished. On the other hand. 88.23% of vocal Polyps, 100% of normal cases. vocal nodules. and vocal cord Paralysis were classified from the data collected in a noisy room.

  • Purpose To evaluate the ultrasonographic characteristics of steatocystomas focusing on the features that aid in differentiating them from epidermal inclusion cysts and lipomas. Materials and Methods The ultrasonographic findings of 14 histologically proven steatocystomas in 10 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The following features were assessed: the layer of involvement, shape, margin, echogenicity, posterior acoustic features, and the presence of a visible wall or intralesional striations. The findings were compared with those of subcutaneous lipomas and epidermal inclusion cysts to identify those findings that aid in the differential diagnosis of steatocystomas. Results The majority of steatocystomas appeared as a subcutaneous mass (n = 6, 42.9%) or a mass involving both the dermal and subcutaneous layers (n = 6, 42.9%). Steatocystomas exhibited a well-defined smooth margin (n = 12, 85.7%) and homogeneous echogenicity (n = 9, 64.3%), and showed no specific posterior acoustic features (n = 9, 64.3%). The most important features that differentiated steatocystomas from epidermal inclusion cysts were a homogeneous internal echotexture (p = 0.009) and absent or less prominent posterior acoustic enhancement (p < 0.001). The features that distinguished steatocystomas from lipomas were the margin (p < 0.001), echogenicity (p = 0.034), internal echotexture (p = 0.004), and the absence of intralesional striations (p < 0.001). Conclusion Steatocystomas appeared as well-defined homogeneous masses with mild or absent posterior acoustic enhancement.
