  • The objective of this study was to clarify the possibility of adsorption trichloroethylene (TCE) of pretreated granular activated carbon (GAC). The chemical solution used for the acidic treatment was phosphoric acid. In addition, the effect of ultrasound on GAC assessed in this experiments. It was observed that the adsorption of TCE were different based on pH value of pretreated GAC. However, natural water such as groundwater has various factors like ionic strength and hardness etc. Therefore, more laboratory work is needed to study about pretreated GAC.

  • Soybean proteins appear to harbor a great deal of potential as functional ingredients due to the fact that they are composed of highly bioavailable peptides and amino acids. To develop drink- or gel-type foods formulated with soybean protein, the physicochemical properties of intact and chemically modified soy glycinin were assessed. Maleylation to soy glycinin altered the surface charges of glycinin via the modification of lysine residues, and subsequently generated the dissociation of glycinin subunits owing to the increase in charge repulsion. This modification thus improved the solubility of glycinin, particularly under acidic pH conditions. It is worthy of note that maleylation increased the susceptibility of the basic subunits of mTGase and the formation of a substantial quantity of molecules at a low protein solution concentration. The results of dynamic rheological studies indicated that the 5% intact glycinin progressively formed the gel with mTGase treatment in a concentration-dependent manner, but maleylated-glycinin did not.

  • We previously reported that acidic polysaccharide from Panax ginseng induced the proliferation lymphocytes and the generation of activated killer cells. Here we found that polysaccharide (PG-75) precipitated with 75% EtOH from water extract of Panax ginseng also has both in vitron and in vivo hematopoietic activities. In vitro studied with bone marrow cells from BALB/c mouse revealed that PG-75 had direct effect on hematopoietic colony-forming cell(CFC) growth, increased granulocyte macrophage-colony forming cell numbers by 1.59 fold over than non-treated. the ability of PG-75 to modulate hematopoiesis in vivo was evaluated the bone marrow and spleen celluarity, granulocyte-macrophage progenitor cells. BALB/c female mice were administered G-75 intraperitoneally, PG-75 was found to significantly increase the number of BM cells, spleen cells, GM-CFU on 3 hours after injection. PG-75 was also able to induce significant augmentation of GM-CSF and IFN-${\gamma}$, production in sera. These studies illustrate than PG-75 has hematopoietic activities and that this agent may be useful in the prevention and/or treatment of radio- or chemotherapy-associated myelosuppression.

  • Two new 1-aryl-2-benzylmercapto-4-aryl-1,6-dihydro-1,3,5-triazine-6-thiones hvae been synthesized by known methods (Coerdeler et al., 1967). These triazines on treatment with thiourea as dealkylating agent, in acidic medium afforded the corresponding 1-ary-2-mercapto-4-aryl-1,6-dihydro-1,3,5-triazine-6-thione which on further reaction with different ${\alpha},{\;}{\beta}-unstaturated$ carbonyl compounds and aryl-cyanamide ydrochloride affordered the related adducts. Some of these compounds show appreciable antithyroidal activity.

  • Rice straw was used in the acetone-butanol fermentation by semultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) using Clostridium acetobutylicum and cellulolytic enzyme. Over 230 mM of solvent was produced from alkali treated rice straw of from ball-milled microcrystalline cellulose whilst only acidic fermentation products were formed from ball-milled rice straw. From the results it is concluded that rice straw used in the study contained an inhibitor for the solventogenesis by the organism which is insoluble in water and some organic solvent and destroyed by alkaline treatment.

  • The chemical composition and stabilities of the purified ginseng invertase were investigated. The purified enzyme was found to be a glycoprotein composed of 80.2% protein and 19.7% total sugar. The protein component of the enzyme was composed of acidic amino acid (9.3%), basic amino acid (48.9%), nonpolar amino acid (21.4%), polar amino acid (20.4%) and 6.1% S-containing amino acid. It showed especially high contents of histidine and serine. The enzyme was inactivated almost completely by the treatment with some proteases (papain, pepsin. trypsin, pancreatin and microbial alkaline pretense) and protein denatllrants (8M urea and 6M guanidine-HC1), bolt not with glyrosidase (${\alpha}$-amylase, ${\beta}$-amylase. glcoamylese and cellullase). btonosaccharides sllch as glilrose, fructose, galactose and mannose did not exert any influence on the enzyme activity. The activity of the enzyme was inhibited by Ag+, Mn2+, Hg2+, Zn2+ and Al3+, whereas Ca2+, Mg2+, Ba2+ and Fe3+ gave rather activating effects on the enzyme activity. The enzyme was relatively stable in the VH range of VH 6 and 8, and at the temperatures below 35$^{\circ}C$.

  • A mixture of 20(R)- and 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg$_{3}$ was obtained under mild acidic hydrolysis from protopanaxadiol saponins, ginsenosides Rb$_{1}$, Rb$_{2}$, Rc and Rd. The product was acetylated to give the peracetates, which were further converted into 20(R)-ginsenoside Rg$_{3}$, 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg$_{3}$, 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh$_{2}$ and 20(S)-ginsenoside Rh$_{2}$ by the direct alkaline treatment depending upon two kinds of temperature conditions respectively. The structure and physicochemical properties of a prosapogenin, 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh$_{2}$, were investigated.

  • The reaction of thiazoline-azetidinone (7) with $I_2$ in $CH_2Cl_2-H_2O$ gave directly 3-iodo-3-methylcepham (4). A phase transfer catalyst considerably increased the reaction rate. Similar to the hydrolysis of thiazoline-azetidinone (7) under a weak acidic condition, thiazole (10) was given as major product in the treatment with 0.1 eq. of iodine. The difference between cyclization reaction and hydrolysis could be explained in terms of solvents, the amount of iodine and the nature of thiazoline-azetidinones (7).

  • The seeds of Zizyphus Jujuba have been used as an antianxiety agent for the treatment of insomnia from the earliest times. Sanjoinine-A, isolated from the seeds of Zizyphus Jujuba, have been found to have a minor tranquilizer activity. However this drug is poorly soluble in water. In order to increase the dissolution rate of sanjoinine-A, solid dispersions with PVP-MC and inclusion complex with ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$ were prepared and evaluated. All of these systems increased the dissolution rate of sanjoinine A comparing with sanjoinine-A free base. From pH-rate profile of sanjoinine-A at $60^{\circ}C$, it was found that sanjoinine A was relatively stable in acidic solution, but unstable in basic solution.

  • To study possible modification of acrylic fiber, Cashmilon SF was treated with hexamethylene-diamine(HMDA) in toluene at elevated temperature. Physico-chemical properties of treated fiber were tested by dyeing with benzyl scarlet BS and by measuring tensile strength of the fiber. Following results were obtained from this experiment. 1) HMDA and fiber were condensed at above $120^{\circ}C$. 2) Treated samples could be dyed with acidic dyes. 3) Treatment with HMDA decreased tensile strength of the fiber. This study therefore suggests that HMDA can be used to modify the properties of the fiber.
