To determine in vitro effects of phenylbutazone and niflumic acid on warfarin binding to rabbit serum protein, warfarin was added to the rabbit plasma, and the bound fraction was determined by warfarin-protein complex fluorescence. The bound fraction was decreased by phenylbtazone and niflumic acid. From this effect niflumic acid was found to have the more potent ability to displace warfarin from protein binding sites than phenylbutazone.
A series of samples having different $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio were prepared by treating hydrogen mordenites with boiling hydrochloric acid and with hydrofluoric acid. The acidities of these samples were measured by TPD of $NH_3$ and by pyridine adsorption using IR, and the catalytic activities and selectivities of isomerization were measured for the reaction of ortho-xylene. For the samples treated by boiling hydrochloric acid, the acidities decreased with the increasing $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio caused by the extraction of framework aluminum. The sample having the $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio or 22 showed better activity than the others. For the samples treated by hydrofluoric acid, the content of chemically binding fluorine increased with the increasing contact time of hydrofluoric acid solution. The catalytic activities decreased with the hydrofluoric acid treatment due to the decreased acid sites resulted from the extraction of aluminum and silicon as well as the hydroxyl group replacement by the fluoride ion. The slightly increasing catalytic activities, however, came from the newly created acid sites, due to the removal of surface silicon, having enhanced by the inductive effect of binding fluorin with further acid treatment.
Time resolved phosphorescence of Dibromobenzophenone (DBBP) choleic acid crystal was observed at 4.2 K as functions of excitation energy and delay time. The experimental results reveal that the energy transfer efficiency is dependent on the excitation energy, i.e. the density of acceptors sites. As the excitation energy or delay time increases, the resonance phosphorescence does not broaden and shift gradually, rather a broad luminescence band develops about 290 cm?1 to lower energy of the resonance phosphorescence. The observation implies that energy transfer from high to low energy sites in this system is controlled by emission of phonons or vibrons. The data of time resolved experiments were analyzed in terms of a mechanism involving direct donor-acceptor excitation transport by exchange coupling. It was concluded that an isotropic twodimensional exchange interaction topology is consistent with energy transfer in this system.

The bacteriophages lytic for Vibrio furnissi, Vibrio fluvialis and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were isolated from fish gills and shellfish. Nucleic acid of bacteriophages was prepared and restriction endonuclease profile was compared. All isolates contained deoxyribonucleic acid. V. furnissi bacteriophage from fish gills showed 2 bands with Bgl II, 1 with Pst, 3 with Hind III, I with Bam HI and 2 with EcoR 1. V fluvialis phage represented 7 fragments with Bgl II, 1 with Pst, 4 with Hind III, and 2 with EcoR 1. V. parahamolyticus produced 13 sites with Hind III and 4 sites with EcoR 1. The fragment types were varied depending on the phage isolation. All three phages were digested with Hind III and EcoR I with different sizes. V. furnissi phage were digested with 5 different restriction enzymes.
Amorphous alumina(AA) the precursor of ${\gamma}$-alumina for catalyst support was made in the newly designed ball filled heating column. Some properties of AA as precursor were investigated. In observation of microstruc-ture and pore structure of AA and its derivatives scanning electronic microscope(SEM) and transmission electronic microscope(TEM) were used. It was found that the width of one particle in AA was 45~60$\AA$ and the average distance among the particles ranged 9~12 $\AA$ which suggested a micropore structure. When AA was reacted with water the shape of the surface was found to be altered and acicular bioehmite was formed inside AA which contributed inproved formability. Pore distribution was evaluated for the three samples of AA ground and granulated lump and La2O3 coated alumina. Acid sites were quantitatively determined by ammonia TPD method and the effect of impurity of Na on acid sites was discussed. Water adsorption capacity was evaluated in terms of a desiccant.
This paper provides a comprehensive overview of geochemical approaches for investigating and assessing heavy metal contamination in abandoned mine sites. Major sources of contaminants at the abandoned mine sites are mine water, waste rocks, tailings, and chemicals used in beneficiation and mineral processing. Soil, sediment, surface and ground water, and ecological system can be contaminated by heavy metals, which are transported due to erosion of mine waste piles, discharge of acid mine drainage and processed water, and dispersion of dust from waste rocks and tailings. The abandoned mine sites should be characterized using various methods including chemical analysis, mineralogical analysis, acid generation prediction tests, leaching/extraction tests, and field tests. Potential and practical environmental impacts from the abandoned mines should be assessed based on the site characterization.
Eurasian yellow perch (Perca fluviatilis) and American yellow perch (Perca flavescens) are known to be endemic species in Eurasia and North America, respectively. The presence of endemic species on each continent suggests their independent evolutionary history. However, because of the morphological similarity, distribution pattern, and only recent fossil record, their divergence time and speciation of the two Perca species has long been controversial. Here, from the comparison of the entire nucleotide sequences of cytochrome b gene, large genetic divergence between the two Perca species is observed although they are morphologically similar each other. Among 1,140 base pairs, interspecific nucleotide differences are found at 130 sites $(11.4\%)$. The differences varies with codon position, showing 22 sites in the first, 5 sites in the second, and 103 sites in the third codon position. Considering the types of nucleotide changes, transitional differences are much more than transversional differences and its ratio turned out to be 5.19. The estimated divergence time of the two Perca species indicates that they were separated each other approximately in the late Miocene period, which implies the long history of speciation. With comparison of the inferred amino acid sequences, strong structural and functional constraints which seem to be maintained by the highly conservative amino acid residues or protein regions, as found in other taxonomic groups of organisms, are also recognized in the cytochrome b of the fishes examined.
Recently, environmental DNA (eDNA)-based metabarcoding approaches have been proposed to evaluate the status of freshwater ecosystems owing to various advantages, including fast and easy sampling and minimal habitat disruption from sampling. Therefore, as a case study, we applied eDNA metabarcoding techniques to evaluate the effects of an abandoned mine land located near a headwater stream of Nakdonggang River, South Korea, by examining benthic macroinvertebrate diversity and compared the results with those obtained using the traditional Surber-net sampling method. The number of genera was higher in Surber-net sampling (29) than in the eDNA analysis (20). The genus richness tended to decrease from headwater to downstream in eDNA analysis, whereas richness tended to decrease at sites with acid-sulfated sediment areas using Surber-net sampling. Through cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling, the sampling sites were differentiated into two parts: acid-sulfated and other sites using Surber-net sampling, whereas they were grouped into the two lowest downstream and other sites using eDNA sampling. To evaluate freshwater ecosystems using eDNA analysis in practical applications, it is necessary to constantly upgrade the methodologies and compare the data with field survey methods.
Bentonite occurs in the Janggi Conglomerate of Tertiary age and consists mainly of montmorillonite with Mg as predominant interlayer cations. The bentonite was reacted with various concentrations of sulfuric acid (0.8~1.5M) for various reaction time (1-10h) at $103^{\circ}C$. Cation exchange capacity, exchangeable cations, surface area and solid acidity of the original bulk and acid activated bentonites were measured. Chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the changes in structure and properties of the acid activated bentonite. The dissolution of octahedral cations occurs not only from the edge of the clay platelets but also throughout the whole clay structure creating vacant octahedral sites. These lattice defects are created by $H^+$ diffused into the smectite layers. The cations leached possibly from the octahedral sheets are adsorbed on the interlayer exchange sites. They are exchanged with hydronium ions again by stronger acid attack. These reactions create wedge-shaped pores resulting in the increase of the surface area and the changes the morphology in the lattice structure.
This study was carried out to investigate the relation of acid depositions and chlorophyll concentration in the Pinus thunbergii leaves. pH of throughfall in Pinus thunbergii forest was 4.20 at industrial sites, and 4.87 at urban sites. Total chlorophyll concentration in leaves were 0.5984 at industrial sites, and 0.6784 at urban sites. The average $SO_2$ concentration in air was 0.029ppm at industrial sites, and 0.011ppm at urban sites. Correlation between chlorophyll concentration in the Pinus thunbergii leaves and acid depositions was pH (r=-0.8769), ${NO_3}^-$ (r=0.6983), ${SO_4}^{2-}$ (r=0.8929), $SO_2$ (r=0.8738), and $NO_2$ (r=0.8523) (p<0.001). respectively. The estimation equation of chlorophyll concentration in the Pinus thunbergii leaf (Y) were given by Y=4.8979 + 0.7698pH + $0.8412{SO_4}^2$ + $0.8673SO_2$, + $0.8767NO_2$+ $0.8767{NO_3}^-$ ($r^2$=0.8873), which coefficients of determination was 0.88.
