Marine emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) have received much attention because the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires the installation of vapour emission control systems for the loading of crude oils or petroleum products onto ships. It was recently recognised that significant corrosion occurs inside these vapour emission control systems, which can cause severe clogging issues. In this study, we analysed the chemical composition of drain water sampled from currently operating systems to investigate the primary causes of corrosion in vapour recovery systems. Immersion and electrochemical tests were conducted under simulated conditions with various real drain water samples, and the impact of corrosion on the marine vapour recovery system was carefully investigated. Moreover, corrosion tests on alternative materials were conducted to begin identifying appropriate substitutes. Thermodynamic calculations showed the effects of environmental factors on the production of condensed sulphuric acid from VOC gas. A model of sulphuric acid formation and accumulation by the characteristics of VOC from crude oil and flue gas is suggested.
This study was carried out to examine the optimal analytical method for determination of urinary toxic arsenic (inorganic arsenic and its metabolites) by HG-AAS (hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry). In the analysis of SRMs (standard reference materials), method E (addition of 0.4% L-cysteine to pre-reductant and use 0.04M HCl as carrier acid) showed the most accurate results compared with the reference values. In the analysis of 30 urinary samples, analytical results were significantly different depend on the component of pre-reductant and the concentration of carrier acid. When the concentration of carrier acid was higher, the analytical result was lower. The recovery rates of MMA (monomethylarsonic acid) and DMA (dimethylarsenic acid) were varied by the concentration of pre-treatment acid and carrier acid and hydride generation reagents. When the concentration of carrier acid was 1.62 M (5% HCl), the recovery rates of DMA was 1%. The recovery rates of MMA and DMA in method E (=V) were 102% and 100%, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the component and concentration of pre-reductant and carrier acid must be carefully adjusted in the analysis of urinary arsenic, and method E is recommendable as the most precise analytical method for determination of urinary toxic arsenic.
The anionic exchange resins with the Dowex-1 and Amberlite CG-400 form were transformed into resin of sulfate and acetate acid form, respectively. The uranyl complex ions with SO$_{4}$$^{2-}$ and CH$_{3}$COO$^{-}$ were adsorbed on the anion exchange resion mentioned above, and these complex ions were eluted as mixture eluents of 0.7M HNO$_{3}$ - 0.5M NH$_{4}$NO$_{3}$ by anion exchange chromatography. The optimum adsorption conditions of uranyl anion complex ions adsorbed on the upper of the resin colmun were 1.5-2.0 ml/min of flow rates at pH 2.0 and adsorptive power of uranyl complex ion of sulfuric acid type were nearly consistent with the Caussion normal distribution curve, whereas the elution state of UO$_{2}$(Ac)$_{2}$$^{4-}$ with acetic acid type was departed. The weighing form obtained from resin of sulfuric acid and aceric acid type was U$_{3}$O$_{8}$ whose recovery was 91.7%. The possibility of recovering uranium from the monazite sulfate solution using a strong base anion resin, Amberlite CG-400(sulfate form), was successfully recovered more than 90%.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of glucuronic acid on antioxidative defense system and recovery of muscle fatigue in rat artier aerobic exercise. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 150 $\pm$ 10g were randomly assigned to one normal(N) group and three exercise training groups. Exercise training groups were classified into glucuronic acid free intubation group(T group), 250mg glucuronic acid/kg bw intubation group(TU group), and 500 mg glucuronic acid/kg bw intubation group(2TU group) according to glucuronic acid supplementation level. The glucuronic acids were administered to rats by oral intubation before exercise training. The experimental rats in exercise training groups(T, TU and 2TU) were exercised on glucuronic acid supplementation or rats in normal group were confined in cage for 4 weeks. And rats were sacrificed with an overdose of pentobarbital injection just after running. Liver xanthine oxidase(XOD) activities were not significantly different among four groups. The activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) in T group was no significant difference from N group, but those of TU and 2TU groups were increased by 9% and 18%, respectively, compared with that of T group. Liver glutathione peroxidase(GSHpx) activites of T and TU groups showed a similar tendency to that of normal group, but increase 17% in 2TU group compared with normal group. The ratio of GSH/GSSG in liver of T group was lower than that of normal group, but those of TU and 2TU groups were a similar tendency to that of normal group. Contents of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS) in T group was increased by 47%, compared with that of normal group but those of TU group and 2TU group were lower 27% and 35%, respectively, compared with that of T group. The contents of glycogen in soleus muscle significantly lower in all three trained exercise groups than that of normal group, but there were no significant differences among the trained exercise groups. Contents of hepatic glycogen in T group were decreased 27% compared with those of normal group while those of TU and 2TU groups were the same as normal group levels. The contents of serum lactic acid in T group were increased 240% of normal group, but hose of TU and 2TU groups were decreased 38%, 39%, respectively, by glucuronic acid supplementations, compared with that of T group. In conclusion, the effects of glucuronic acids in exercise training rats would appear to reduce peroxidation of tissue as an antioxidative defense mechanism and promote recovery of muscle fatigue.

This study evaluates the pretreatment for analysis of benzidine metabolites in urine by measuring the recovery rates according to the temperature and periods of storage of the urine. By the solid phas e extraction, the recovery rates of basic hydrolysis are benzidine 67.4 %, monoacetylbenzidine 105.1 %, and diacetylbenzidine 115.8 %, respectively. By the liquid extraction, the recovery rates of back-extraction into 0.1 M perchloric acid are benzidine 105.7%, monoacetylbenzidine 94.2 %, diacetylbenzidine 72.8 %, respectively. The difference of the recovery rates between the back-extraction into 0.1 M HCl and 0.1 M perchloic acid after basic hydrolysis are 101 % and 98.8 %, respectively. When the recovery rates of the urinary s amples of pH 3, pH 7, pH 12 at $25^{\circ}C$ and $-76^{\circ}C$ are compared for four weeks, there are no differences according to the temperature and the periods of storage. The above results show that the solid phase extraction and back-extraction by 0.1 M perchloric acid after basic hydrolys is are suitable for the analysis of benzidine metabolites. There are no difference of the recovery rates of the urinary samples stored at $25^{\circ}C$ and $-76^{\circ}C$ at pH 3, pH 7, pH 12, respectively for 28 days.
The Polygoni Radix and Cynanchi Radix have been used to potentiate the liver functions in clinic of Oriental Medicine. The water extracts of Polygoni Radix and Cynanchi Radix were administered orally to rats intoxicated with carbon tetrachloride and then this experiment have been performed by observing liver fatty degeneration and activities of enzymes such as cytochrome oxidase (CYO), adenosine triphosphatase (ATP), acid phosphatase (ACP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). By oral administration of water extracts of the radices between 1 and 10 days, the following results were obtained. 1. The group given Cynanchi Radix extract showed recovery of the fat liver in 4 days, whereas that given Polygoni Radix extract did the recovery in 8 days. 2. In cytochrome oxidase activity, the group given Cynanchi extract showed normal activity in 6 days, whereas that given Polygoni Radix extract did the activity in 8 days. 3. In adenosine triphosphatase activity, the groups given Cynanchi Radix and Polygoni Radix extracts showed normal activities in 2 and 8 days, respectively. 4. In acid phosphatase activity, the groups given Cynanchi Radix and Polygoni Radix extracts showed recovery of the activities in 2 and 4 days, respectively. 5. In lactate dehydrogenase activity, the group given Cynanchi Radix and Polygoni Radix extracts showed recovery of the activities in 6 and 10 days, respectively. 6. In alkaline phosphatase activity, the group given Cynanchi Radix extract showed normal activity in 2 days, whereas that given Polygoni Radix extract showed slight recovery between 4 and 6 days followed by decrease of the activity in 8 and 10 days. From the above-mentioned results, it was found that both of the water extracts of Polygoni and Cynanchi Radix possessed the recovery action of liver function as intoxicated with carbon tetrachloride in rats. It is also noted that the extract of Cynanchi Radix showed more potent activity than that of Polygoni Radix.
As the experimental results of membrane application for the production and recovery of volatile fatty acids, suspended solids concentration, the number of acid producing bacteria and organic acid concentration increased with membrane coupling in the fermenter. The application of membrane for the efficiency increase of solid-liquid separation and fermentation made the number of acid producing bacteria increase in the fermenter, thus acid forming rate showed higher value than that of membrane-free fermenter. Membrane-coupled fermenter was believed to be an effective technology for the improvement of recovery efficiency of volatile fatty acids from organic sludge.
In this study, we performed an electrowinning process for effective removal of metals (Cu and Ni) in solution and their recovery as solid forms. A complete removal of Cu and Ni (1,000 mg/L) was observed during four times recycling test, indicating that our electrowinning system can ensure the efficient metal removal with high stability and durability. In addition, we investigated effect of operation parameters (i.e., concentration of boric acid only for Ni, variation of pH, concentration of electrolyte ($H_2SO_4$), and cell voltage) on the efficiency of metal removal (Cu and Ni) during the electrowinning. The addition of boric acid significantly enhanced removal efficiency of Ni as the concentration of boric acid increased up to 10 g/L. Compared to negligible pH effect (pH 1, 2, and 4) on the Cu removal, we observed the increase in removal efficiency of Ni as the pH increased from 1 to 4. The electrolyte concentration did not significantly influence the removal of Cu and Ni in this study. We also obtained great removal rates of Cu and Ni at 2.5 V and 4.0 V, which were much faster than those at lower voltages. Finally, almost 99% of each Cu and Ni (1,000 mg/L) was selectively removed from the mixture of metals by adjusting pH and addition of boric acid after the completion of Cu removal. The findings in this study can provide a fundamental knowledge about effect of important parameters on the efficiency of metal recovery during the electrowinning.

The inhibition of cell recovery might be proceeded via either the damage of the mechanism of the recovery itself or via the formation of irreversible damage which could not be repaired at all. Both these processes may take place at the same time. Any of these possibilities would result in a decrease in both the rate and extent of cell recovery. To distinguish them, a quantitative approach describing the process of recovery as a decrease in the effective radiation dose was applied to experimental data on the recovery from potentially lethal damage in Chinese hamster cells exposed to X-rays alone or combined with various chemicals (pyruvate, novobiocin, lactate, nalidixic acid, 3-aminobenzamide). For these particular cases, it is concluded that the recovery process itself is not damaged and the inhibition of the recovery is entirely due to the enhanced yield of the irreversibly damaged cells.
A study on the recovery of silver and nitric acid in the liquid waste resulted from the mediated electrochemical oxidation(MEO) process was conducted. The removal of silver in the concentrated nitric acid solutions was carried out by the electrodeposition. The removal efficiency more than 98% could be obtained in nitric acid concentrations less than 3 M with the current efficiency of nearly 100%. The experimonts on the evaporation for the recovery of nitric acid were performed as well. At the evaporation factor of 25., the degree of nitric acid recovery in 3.5 M nitric acid solution containing 0.5 to 1.0 mol% NaNO, was 80~90% resulting in 2.8~3.1 M nitric acid. The design factors and operating conditions of the distillation tower were analyzed by using MEH model derived by Maphtali-Sandholm with the throughput of 4 kg/hr for the enrichment of dilute nitric acid solution recovered by evaporation to reuse in the MEO process. The distillation column composed of eleven theoretical stages having the overall tray efficiency of 70% are needed to obtain 1.03 kg/h of 12M nitric acid and 2.97 kg/h of water with feed being introduced to the column at tray 6 from the bottom at the reflux ratio of 0.25, the reboiler with the heat load of 2.7 kW, and the condenser with the cooling load of 0.5 kW.
