  • The composite materials may be exposed to environmental (thermal or hygral or both) condition during their service life. The effect of environmental condition is usually adverse from the point of view of design of composite structures. In the present research study the effect of hygrothermal condition on the design of laminated composite structures is investigated. The active fiber composite (AFC) which may be utilized as actuator or sensor is considered in the present analysis. The sensor layer is used to sense the level of response of the composite structures. The sensed voltage is fed back to the actuator through the controller. In this study both displacement and velocity feedback controllers are employed to reduce the response of the composite laminate within acceptable limit. The Newmark direct time integration scheme is employed along with modal superposition method to improve the computational efficiency. It is observed from the numerical study that the laminated composite structures become weak in the presence of hygrothermal load. The response of the structure can be brought to the acceptable level once the AFC layer is activated through the feedback loop.

  • In this paper a model is developed for an inventory system in which the number of units of acceptable quality in a replenishment lot is uncertain and the demand. during the stockout period is back ordered and. also under the same condition an inventory model with experdited stockout is developed. It is assumed that the fraction of the acceptable quality in a replenishment lot is a random variable whose probability distribution is known. The optimal replenishment policy is synthesized for such a system. A numerical example is used to illustrate the theory.

  • Harmonics and fundamental reactive power of nonlinear loads in serious unbalanced power condition are compensated by current synchronous detection(CSD) theory which is also acceptable for single phase power system, but the CSD theory is not suitable any more in case of controlled independently harmonics and reactive component. Therefore a new algorithm the extended current synchronous detection (ECSD)theory for a three phase active power filter based on decomposition of fundamental reactive distorted components is proposed in this paper. The proposed ECSD theory is simulated and tested comparison with a few power theories under asymmtrical condition in power system.

  • High speed seam weldability of tin coated steels was investigated. Welding was performed by the laboratory wire seam welder that was equipped with process monitoring system Test results showed that increase in applied current and pressure reduced the total resistance across the welding electrodes. Lower and upper limits of welding current increased as the sheet thickness increased, while the acceptable welding condition range decreased. However, extremely low electrode pressure produced unstable welding condition range. The results also demonstrated that slower welding speeds widened the optimum welding heat input range.

  • Objectives. Two main digital signal processing technologies inside the modern hearing aid to provide the best conditions for hearing aid users are directionality (DIR) and digital noise reduction (DNR) algorithms. There are various possible settings for these algorithms. The present study evaluates the effects of various DIR and DNR conditions (both separately and in combination) on listening comfort among hearing aid users. Methods. In 18 participants who received hearing aid fitting services from the Rehabilitation School of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences regularly, we applied acceptable noise level (ANL) as our subjective measure of listening comfort. We evaluated both of these under six different hearing aid conditions: omnidirectional-baseline, omnidirectional-broadband DNR, omnidirectional-multichannel DNR, directional, directional-broadband DNR, and directional-multichannel DNR. Results. The ANL results ranged from -3 dB to 14 dB in all conditions. The results show, among all conditions, both the omnidirectional-baseline condition and the omnidirectional-broadband DNR condition are the worst conditions for listening in noise. The DIR always reduces the amount of noise that patients received during testing. The DNR algorithm does not improve listening in noise significantly when compared with the DIR algorithms. Although both DNR and DIR algorithms yielded a lower ANL, the DIR algorithm was more effective than the DNR. Conclusion. The DIR and DNR technologies provide listening comfort in the presence of noise. Thus, user benefit depends on how the digital signal processing settings inside the hearing aid are adjusted.

  • Visual perception experiments were conducted to determine the acceptable limit of the contrast ratio of LCD TV under the watching condition. The results showed that the corresponding contrast ratio should be below 10,000:1 at the 3H(height of screen) distance in the living room environment.

  • In this study, indoor thermal environment, resident behavior of operating cooling device, and thermal comfort vote are investigated at the living room of apartment during summertime in Seoul. Based on the results of the investigation, indoor air temperatures that residents turn air conditioners (especially for cooling load in this research) on and off were found out. The relationships between outdoor weather condition and the number of days using air conditioner, and whether operating patterns of the devices were also found out. The acceptable thermal comfort zone is figured out from these results, and this research is expected to contribute to the development of household air conditioner. The results can be summarized as the followings; Residents turned the air conditioner on at $29.76^{\circ}C$ of indoor air temperature, and $28.89^{\circ}C$ of $SET^\ast$. And turned the air conditioner off at $27.31^{\circ}C$ of indoor air temperature, and $23.70^{\circ}C$ $SET^\ast$. Therefore, acceptable thermal comfort zone could be lied between these temperatures. If comfortable indoor thermal environment can be obtained with various architectural passive cooling techniques based on the results, energy consumption of cooling devices will be reduced.

  • Fire model shall be verified and validated to reliably show the predictive capabilities for a specific use. In the process of model verification and validation, both the acceptable uses and limitation of fire model are established. In this study, the results of FDS simulation are compared with the data of PRISME experiment such as temperature, heat release rate, heat flux, product concentrations in the under-ventilated two-room condition. Furthermore, the sensitivity of FDS under ventilation condition changes are evaluated. FDS provide the reliable prediction for under-ventilated two-room fire scenario with slightly deviation.

  • To investigate the actual management condition of group homes for the elderly and their living environment, four group homes and 26 elderly people living in the group home were surveyed. As the results, the relationships between the administrator and the elderly were acceptable, but the group homes seem suffer from insufficient administrative supports. The most required service in the group homes was a conversational partner service. Moreover, the most satisfactory point for the elderly living in group homes was the settlement of food, clothing, and housing. The unsatisfactory things were the service related to medical, leisure, and house work and an invasion of their private life. The resident elderly in group homes were fully satisfied with their living environment including the relationship with the manager and the people in the facility. They, however, do not have much chance to make an exchange with their neighbor. Overall, the elderly want to stay continuously in the group homes where they are living current.
