  • Contamination of subsurface results in degradation of geomaterials (i.e., soils and rock mass), in the long run. This is mainly due to the presence of chemical and/or radiological materials in undesirable concentrations and at elevated temperatures. However, as contaminant-geomaterial interaction is an extremely slow and complex process, which primarily depends on their physical, chemical and mineralogical properties, it is quite difficult to study this interaction under laboratory or in situ conditions. In such a situation, accelerated physical modeling, using a geotechnical centrifuge, and finite element/difference based numerical modeling techniques are found to be quite useful. This paper presents details of various modeling techniques developed by the researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai, India, for studying heat migration, flow and interaction (fate) of reactive and non-reactive contaminants in the geoenvironment, under saturated and unsaturated conditions. In addition, paper presents details of the technique that can be employed for determining susceptibility of a material to undergo physico-chemico-mineralogical alterations due to its interaction with contaminants.

  • In order to prevent accidents via defective ammunition, this paper analyzes recent research on ammunition life prediction methodology. This workanalyzes current shelf-life prediction approaches by comparing the pros and cons of physical modeling, accelerated testing, and statistical analysis-based prediction techniques. Physical modeling-based prediction demonstrates its usefulness in understanding the physical properties and interactions of ammunition. Accelerated testing-based prediction is useful in quickly verifying the reliability and safety of ammunition. Additionally, statistical analysis-based prediction is emphasized for its ability to make decisions based on data. This paper aims to contribute to the early detection of defective ammunition by analyzing ammunition life prediction methodology hereby reducing defective ammunition accidents. In order to prepare not only Korean domestic war situation but also the international affairs from Eastern Europe and Mid East countries, it is very important to enhance the stability of organizations using ammunition and reduce costs of potential accidents.

  • As integrity of semiconductor device is increased, accurate and efficient modeling and recipe generation of semiconductor fabrication procsses are necessary. Among the major semiconductor manufacturing processes, dry etc- hing process using gas plasma and accelerated ion is widely used. The process involves a variety of the chemical and physical effects of gas and accelerated ions. Despite the increased popularity, the complex internal characteristics made efficient modeling difficult. Because of difficulty to determine the control input for the desired output, the recipe generation depends largely on experiences of the experts with several trial and error presently. In this paper, the optimal control of the etching is carried out in the following two phases. First, the optimal neural network models for etching process are developed with genetic algorithm utilizing the input and output data obtained by experiments. In the second phase, search for optimal control inputs in performed by means of using the optimal neural network developed together with genetic algorithm. The results of study indicate that the predictive capabilities of the neural network models are superior to that of the statistical models which have been widely utilized in the semiconductor factory lines. Search for optimal control inputs using genetic algorithm is proved to be efficient by experiments. (author). refs., figs., tabs.

  • Radio relics are diffuse radio sources found in the outskirts of galaxy clusters and they are thought to trace synchrotron-emitting relativistic electrons accelerated at shocks. We explore a diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) model for radio relics in which a spherical shock with the parameters relevant for the Sausage radio relic in cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301 impinges on a magnetized cloud containing fossil relativistic electrons. This model is expected to explain some observed characteristics of giant radio relics such as the relative rareness, uniform surface brightness along the length of thin arc-like radio structure, and spectral curvature in the integrated radio spectrum. We find that the observed surface brightness profile of the Sausage relic can be explained reasonably well by shocks with speed $u_s{\sim}3{\times}10^3km/s$ and sonic Mach number $M_s{\sim}3$. These shocks also produce curved radio spectra that steepen gradually over $(0.1-10){\nu}_{br}$ with a break frequency ${\nu}_{br}{\sim}1GHz$, if the duration of electron acceleration is ~60-80 Myr. However, the abrupt increase in the spectral index above ~1.5 GHz observed in the Sausage relic seems to indicate that additional physical processes, other than radiative losses, operate for electrons with the Lorentz factor, ${\gamma}_e$ > $10^4$.

  • The alpine agricultural activities are usually performed at higher and steep areas in nature. Thus, significant amounts of soil erosion are occurring compared with those from other areas. Thus, the soil erosion induced environmental impacts in these areas are getting greater. The Doam watershed is located at alpine areas and it has been well known that the agricultural activities in the watershed are causing accelerated soil erosion and water quality degradations. Many modeling approaches were employed to solve soil erosion and water quality issues. In this study, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was utilized to simulate the hydrologic and sediment behaviors in the Doam watershed. In many previous modeling studies, the digital soil map and its corresponding soil properties were used without modification to reflect soil conditioning at many agricultural fields of the Doam watershed. Thus, the soil sample was taken at the agricultural field within the Doam watershed and analyzed for its physical properties. In this study, the digital topsoil properties in the agricultural fields within the Doam watershed were replaced with the soil properties for reconditioned soil analyzed in this study to simulate the impacts of using soil properties for reconditioned soil in hydrologic and sediment modeling at the Doam watershed using the SWAT model. The hydrologic component of the SWAT model was calibrated and validated for measured flow data from 2002 to 2003. The $R^2$ value was 0.79 and the EI value was 0.53 for weekly simulated data. The calibrated model parameters were used for hydrologic component validation and the $R^2$ value was 0.86 and the EI value was 0.74 for weekly data. For sediment comparison, the $R^2$ value was 0.67 and the EI value was 0.59. These statistics improved with the use of soil properties of the reconditioned soil in the field compared with the results obtained without considering soil reconditioning. The simulated sediment amounts with and without considering the soil properties of the reconditioned soil were 284,813 ton and 158,369 ton, respectively. This result indicates that there could be approximately 79% of errors in estimated sediment yield at the Doam watershed, although the model comparison with the measured data gave similar satisfactory statistics with and without considering soil properties from the reconditioned soil.
