  • Out door exposure to daylight and weather climate conditions can cause adverse effect on the properties of automotive plastic materials. The effects of sunlight exposure, especially ultra violet (UV) radiation, can break down the chemical bonds in a polymeric material. This degradation process is called photo-degradation and ultimately leads to color changes, cracking, chalking, the loss of physical properties and deterioration of other properties. To explore the effect of sunlight exposure on the automotive materials, this study investigated photo-oxidation degree and surface property change of molding parts by analytical methods. For the further study, accelerated weathering test methods are proposed, which can correlate with out door weathering, to predict long term performance of automotive plastic materials.

  • The five classes of the thermally aged CF8M specimen are prepared using an artificially accelerated aging method. Namely, after the specimens are held for 100, 300, 900, 1800, and 3600hrs at 430$^{\circ}C$ respectively, the specimens are water-cooled to room temperature. The impact energy variations are measures for both the aged and virgin specimens through the Charpy impact tests in addition to the microstructure observation, tensile, hardness and fatigue crack growth tests. From the present investigation the following results are obtained : 1) The difference among the thermally degraded specimens can be distinguished through their microstructures, 2) Hardness and tensile strength are increased to 300hrs, degradation specimen, while elongation and reduction area are decreased to 3600hrs degradation specimen, and impact energy is decreased to 1800hrs degradation specimen, 3) The FCG rates for thermally degraded specimens are larger than that of the virgin specimen.

  • Aging of transformer insulating material in natural ester insulating oil is compared to that in conventional transformer oil. Aging of insulating paper and insulating oil have been studied by performing accelerated thermal aging test. Sealed aging test vessels containing cooper, laminated core, Kraft paper and insulating oil(natural oil or mineral oil) were aged at $140^{\circ}C$ for 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 hours. Insulating oils after aging are investigated with total acid number, breakdown voltage and viscosity. Also, degradation of insulating paper after aging is determined using breakdown voltage and mechanical strength. Accelerated aging studies demonstrate a slower aging rate for natural ester insulating oil compared to the rate for conventional mineral oil.

  • The application of the high-performance insulation materials for buildings seems to be an essential measure for reducing energy use in buildings. Phenolic foam is a readily available insulation material with thermal conductivity of about 0.018 to 0.020 W/(mK). It has the advantage of higher thermal resistance and better fire resistance compared to other conventional building insulation materials. Insulation material used for building envelope is regarded as one of the decisive factors for building's energy load. Furthermore, the degradation of its thermal performance over time increasingly affects the building's energy use demand. Generally, the life span of conventionally built buildings is expected to be more than 50 years, so the long-term performance of insulation materials is critical. This paper aims to evaluate the long-term performance of phenolic form boards through an accelerated aging test. The tests were conducted according to BS EN 13166 and KS M ISO 11561. Based on the results of the accelerated aging test, the thermal performance variation of the material was analyzed, and then its aged value after 25 years was computed. Also, the characteristics of the phenolic foam board's long-term performance were also examined based on the standard testing methods adopted.

  • Epoxy resin insulator have good electrical properties (high electric strength, high resistivity, low dielectric loss) in addition to high mechanical strength, small dimensions and design versatility. Polymer insulator, however, are subjected to aging processes, caused by the surrounding atmosphere, which may lead to degradation of their properties. This paper describes the results of a important study on the artificial pollution test, Weather-Ometer properties and rotating wheel dip test of high voltage different aging insulators which are the most important factors for outdoor uses. Also, the objects of this paper are to (a)result of insulator under dry(wet) flashover voltage, (b)artificial pollution test of salt spay, (c)Accelerated aging test of Weather-Ometer, (d) wet and dry flashover voltage under rotating wheel dip test.

  • In this paper, EPR (ethylene propylene rubber) insulation material was accelerated degradation test at $121^{\circ}C$, $136^{\circ}C$, $151^{\circ}C$, and experiment the typical EAB (elongation at break) at mechanical characteristics analysis. It is shown that the failure-time at the point of 50% of the initial value of Elongation rate to obtain the activation energy. The failure-time was shown each 5,219 hr, 3,165 hr, and 668 hr at three temperatures. In order to derive the activation energy, Arrhenius methodology was applied. Also, we got the Arrhenius plot from three accelerated temperatures. The activation energy values got 0.98 eV from EAB test. The experimental data were evaluated for estimating the probability density, and the suitable distribution by using statistical program MINITAB. It is shown that EAB data by the acceleration thermal degradation is most suitable for the Weibull distribution.

  • The reliability of 1.550m-wavelength InGaAs mesa waveguide photodiodes(WGPDs), which developed for 40-Gbps optical receiver applications, fabricated by metal organic chemical vapor deposition is investigated. Reliability is examined by both high-temperature storage tests and the accelerated life tests by monitoring dark current and breakdown voltage. The median device lifetime and the activation energy of the degradation mechanism are computed for WGPD test structures. From the accelerated life test results, the activation energy of the degradation mechanism and median lifetime of these devices in room temperature are extracted from the log-normal failure model by using average lifetime and the standard deviation of that lifetime in each test temperature. It is found that the WGPD structure yields devices with the median lifetime of much longer than $10^6$ h at practical use conditions. Consequently, this WGPD structure has sufficient characteristics for practical 40-Gbps optical receiver modules.

  • In general, polymer materials undergo degradation when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, which can cause dissociation of chemical bonds. FRP composites which are used in strengthening existing structure are usually adhered on the concrete surface, its mechanical properties as well as appearance such as color, surface conditions are affected by sunlight and expecially ultraviolet light. In this study, variations of tensile strength after exposure for certain period of time through accelerated exposure by Xe arc methods specified in KS F 2274 are measured in order to examine strength degradation characteristics of FRP composite. As a result of ultraviolet light test for FRP composite after accelerated exposure for 0, 500, 1000, 1500 hour, discoloration of FRP composite occurs according to the passage of time. But, few strength degradations of FRP composite are observed due to exposure of ultraviolet ray with an small variation of tensile strength.

  • For highly reliable devices it is often defined to "fail" when its performance degrades below a specified value. In this paper we consider a method for optimally designing accelerated degradation tests(ADTs) in which the performance over exposure time and stress has Weibull distribution. For the product whose performance has Weibull distribution, the optimum plan - low stress level and sample proportions allocated to each test condition - is obtained, which minimize the asymptotic variance of maximum likelihood estimator of a stated quantile at design stress. We also present compromise ADTs plan that can be used for the practical purpose.
