This paper introduces an isolated word recognition system realized on a neurocomputer called E-MIND II, which is a 2-D torus wavefront array processor consisting of 256 DNP IIs. The DNP II is an all digital VLSI unit processor for the EMIND II featuring the emulation capability of more than thousands of neurons, the 40 MHz clock speed, and the on-chip learning. Built by these PEs in 2-D toroidal mesh architecture, the E- MIND II can be accelerated over 2 Gcps computation speed. In this light, the advantages of the E-MIND II in its capability of computing speed, scalability, computer interface, and learning are especially suitable for real time application such as speech recognition. We show how to map a TDNN structure on this array and how to code the learning and recognition algorithms for a user independent isolated word recognition. Through hardware simulation, we show that recognition rate of this system is about 97% for 30 command words for a robot control.
We present a robust GPU algorithm constructing a sweep volume boundary for a triangular mesh model. Sweeping geometric entities of a triangular mesh object is first approximated to a set of triangles, the envelope of which becomes the outer boundary of the sweep volume. We find the envelope by computing the arrangement of the triangle set and extracting its outmost boundary. To ensure robustness of the algorithm, we adopt random perturbation of sweep vertices and the interval arithmetic using multi-level precisions. The algorithm is implemented to perform most computation on GPU, and as a result it runs two orders of magnitude faster than other algorithms.

Solar power generation systems require maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control to acquire maximum power using inefficient and high-cost PV modules. Most conventional MPPT algorithms are based on the slope-tracking concept. The perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is a typical slope-tracking method. The two factors that determine the MPPT performance of P&O algorithm are the MPPT control period and the magnitude of the perturbation voltage. The MPPT controller quickly moves to the new maximum power point at insolation change when the perturbation voltage is set to large, and the error of output power will be huge in the steady state even when insolation is not changing. The dynamics of the MPPT controller can be accelerated even though the perturbation voltage is set to small when the MPPT control period is set to short. However, too short MPPT control period does not improve MPPT performance but consumes the MPPT controller resources. Therefore, analyzing the performance of the MPPT controller is necessary for actual insolation conditions in real weather environment to determine the optimum MPPT control period and the magnitude of the perturbation voltage. This study proposes an optimum MPPT control period that maximizes MPPT efficiency by measuring and analyzing actual insolation profiles in typical clear and cloudy weather in central Korea.

The research presented in this paper enables real-time 3D modeling to help make construction processes ultimately faster, more predictable and safer. Initial research efforts used an emerging sensor technology and proved its usefulness in the acquisition of range information for the detection and efficient representation of static and moving objects. Based on the time-of-flight principle, the sensor acquires range and intensity information of each image pixel within the entire sensor's field-of-view in real-time with frequencies of up to 30 Hz. However, real-time working range data processing algorithms need to be developed to rapidly process range information into meaningful 3D computer models. This research ultimately focuses on the application of safer heavy equipment operation. The paper compares (a) a previous research effort in convex hull modeling using sparse range point clouds from a single laser beam range finder, to (b) high-frame rate update Flash LADAR (Laser Detection and Ranging) scanning for complete scene modeling. The presented research will demonstrate if the FlashLADAR technology can play an important role in real-time modeling of infrastructure assets in the near future.
Genetic Algorithms are optimization algorithm that mimics biological evolution to solve optimization problems. Genetic algorithms provide an alternative to traditional optimization techniques by using directed random searches to locate optimal solutions in complex fitness landscapes. Hybrid genetic algorithm that is combined with local search called learning can sustain the balance between exploration and exploitation. The genetic traits that each individual in the population learns through evolution are transferred back to the next generation, and when this learning is combined with genetic algorithm we can expect the improvement of the search speed. This paper proposes a genetic algorithm based Cellular Learning with accelerated learning capability for function optimization. Proposed Cellular Learning strategy is based on periodic and convergent behaviors in cellular automata, and on the theory of transmitting to offspring the knowledge and experience that organisms acquire in their lifetime. We compared the search efficiency of Cellular Learning strategy with those of Lamarckian and Baldwin Effect in hybrid genetic algorithm. We showed that the local improvement by cellular learning could enhance the global performance higher by evaluating their performance through the experiment of various test bed functions and also showed that proposed learning strategy could find out the better global optima than conventional method.

As emergence of the ubiquitous society, it is possible to access the network for services needed to us in anytime and anywhere. The phenomena has been accelerated by revitalization of the sensor network offering the sensing information and data. Currently, sensor network contributes the convenience for various services such as environment monitoring, health care and home automation. However, sensor network has a weak point compared to traditional network, which is easily exposed to attacker. For this reason, messages communicated over the sensor network, are encrypted with symmetric key and transmitted. A number of symmetric cryptography algorithms have been researched. Among of them HIGHT algorithm in hardware and software implementation are more efficient than tradition AES in terms of speed and chip size. Therefore, it is suitable to resource constrained devices including RFID tag, Sensor node and Smart card. In the paper, we present the optimized software implementation on the ultra-light symmetric cryptography algorithm, HIGHT.

As a result of the recent explosive growth of scientific data, extremely large volume datasets have become increasingly commonplace. While several texture-based volume rendering algorithms have been proposed, most of them focused on volumes smaller than the hardware's available texture memory. This paper presents a new parallel volume rendering scheme for very large static and time-varying data on a multipipe system architecture. Our scheme subdivides large volumes dynamically into smaller bricks, and assigns them adaptively to graphics pipes to minimize the costs of texture swapping. With the new method, Phong shaded images can be easily created by computing the gradients on the fly and using the color matrix feature of OpenGL. We report experimental results on an SGI Onyx2 for the various large datasets.

With the advent of the genomics era powered by DNA sequencing technologies, life science is being transformed significantly and biological research and development have been accelerated. Environmental biology concerns the relationships among living organisms and their natural environment, which constitute the global biogeochemical cycle. As sustainability of the ecosystems depends on biodiversity, examining the structure and dynamics of the biotic constituents and fully grasping their genetic and metabolic capabilities are pivotal. The high-speed high-throughput next-generation sequencing can be applied to barcoding organisms either thriving or endangered and to decoding the whole genome information. Furthermore, diversity and the full gene complement of a microbial community can be elucidated and monitored through metagenomic approaches. With regard to human welfare, microbiomes of various human habitats such as gut, skin, mouth, stomach, and vagina, have been and are being scrutinized. To keep pace with the rapid increase of the sequencing capacity, various bioinformatic algorithms and software tools that even utilize supercomputers and cloud computing are being developed for processing and storage of massive data sets. Environmental genomics will be the major force in understanding the structure and function of ecosystems in nature as well as preserving, remediating, and bioprospecting them.
In this article, by using experimental studies and artificial neural network has been tried to investigate the use of nano-silica as concrete admixture to reduce alkali-silica reaction. If there are reactive aggregates and alkali of cement with enough moisture in concrete, a gel will be formed. Then with high reactivity between alkali of cement and existence of silica in aggregates, this gel will expand by absorption of water, and causes expansive pressure and cracks be formed. At the time passes, this gel will reduce both durability and strength of the concrete. By reducing the size of silicate to nano, specific surface area of particles and number of atoms on the surface will be increased, which causes more pozzolanic activity of them. Nano-silica can react with calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$) and produces C-S-H gel. In this study, accelerated mortar bar specimens according to ASTM C 1260 and ASTM C 1567, with different mix proportions were prepared using aggregates of Kerman, such as: none admixture and plasticizer, different proportions of nano-silica separately. By opening the moulds after 24 hour and curing in water at $80^{\circ}C$ for 24 hour, then curing in (1N NaOH) at $80^{\circ}C$ for 14 days, length expansion of mortar bars were measured and compared. It was noted that, the lowest length expansion of a specimens shows the best proportion of admixture based on alkali-silica reactivity. Then, prediction of alkali-silica reaction of concrete has been investigated by using artificial neural network. In this study the backpropagation network has been used and compared with different algorithms to train network. Finally, the best amount of nano silica for adding to mix proportion, also the best algorithm and number of neurons in hidden layer of artificial neural network have been offered.

The method of the reduction of the automotive induction noise can be classified by the method of passive control and the method of active control. However, the passive control method has a demerit to reduce the effect of noise reduction at low frequency (below 500Hz) range and to be limited by a space of the engine room. Whereas, the active control method can overcome the demerit of passive control method. The algorithm of active control is mostly used the LMS (Least-Mean-Square) algorithm because the LMS algorithm can easily obtain the complex transfer function in real-time. Especially, When the Filtered-X LMS (FXLMS) algorithm is applied to an ANC system. However, the convergence performance of LMS algorithm goes bad when the FXLMS algorithm is applied to an active control of the induction noise under rapidly accelerated driving conditions. Thus Normalized FXLMS algorithm was developed to improve the control performance under the rapid acceleration. The advantage of Normalized FXLMS algorithm is that the step size is no longer constant. Instead, it varies with time. But there is one additional practical difficulty that can arise when a nonstationary input is used. If the input is zero for consecutive samples, then the step size becomes unbounded. So, in order to solve this problem. the Correlation FXLMS algorithm was developed. The Correlation FXLMS algorithm is realized by using an estimate of the cross correlation between the adaptation error and the filtered input signal to control the step size. In this paper, the performance of the Correlation FXLMS Is presented in comparison with that of the other FXLMS algorithms based on computer simulations.
