  • As information technology has been evolving, digital library emerges as a vision of future library. Many authors on digital library describe that the problems that today's libraries face would be completely solved by using digital technology. But it is su n.0, pposed that such technology oriented papers do not take care of what the library has been and should remain. This paper is prepared to identify what core elements of library services being provided in traditional environment must be transferred to the digital library. For this purpose, firstly historical transition from traditional library to digital discussed. Secondly, library's fundamental service functions are analysed from three points of view-library as cultural and social institution, library as intellectual reality, library as a collection. And 'control zone' concept is also investigated as a new possibility of academic digital libraries. In contrast to open zone in which information is not controled at all as in internet, in control zone, information is selected and maintained by academic library community, retaining such essential library functions as selection.

  • Huge amount of useful information is getting added to the academic digital world everyday, This digitalized information is heterogeneous and remained limited to a local domain only. How to integrate and share this scattered knowledge with simplicity remained a big challenge. In this paper, we propose a prototype of web application for accomplishing above task using web 2.0 features; it makes traditional academic digital libraries to form as a special case of collaborative environment. This application enables users to customize their own resources to form their own virtual digital library. Further users can utilize personalized information of other users working in similar research domain to form true collaborative environment. • As makerspaces continue to be introduced in academic libraries in Korea, this study explores potential operating strategies of, and long-term justifications for, makerspaces as digital literacy eduational spaces and services at academic libraries. By examining related literature reviews and case studies of makerspaces, this study analyzes various programs and their respective creation, funding, development, and outcomes, including educational value and library-specific goals such as digital literacy and lifelong learning. This study also considers the perspectives of librarians at academic libraries in Korea who were asked about the purpose, impact, and limitations of makerspaces. Certain common themes appear: for example, it is necessary for makerspaces to resolve challenges related to stable funding, as well as staffing and training of professional librarians assisting with the on-the-ground operation of makerspaces. This study proposes that designing makerspaces for an academic library setting goes deeper than providing a collaborative environment with access to new technologies like 3D printers and laser cutters, and it may be uniquely appropriate to draw connections to libraries' objectives to provide digital literacy education and universities' mission to foster innovation and creativity among students.

The structural relationships among factors were also analyzed in this study by utilizing a combined behavioural model which was based on TPB and TAM. This study identified users' intention to use academic libraries according to changes in the use environment, and the findings of this study bring a valuable meaning to library administrators for setting up the strategic plan for the future of academic libraries. The results of this study imply that academic libraries should strategically setup an effective and efficient operating plan based on awareness, attention and cooperation, in order to survive as well as to accomplish balanced growth in rapidly changing environment.
