  • This study was designed to investigate the relation between stress coping behavior and social adjustments in late childhood. Total 657 teenagers (238 ten-year-olds, 230 twelve-year-olds, and 189 fourteen-year-olds) and their parents living in Inchon area participated in the study. Each child was evaluated whether they cope either (a) defensively or (b) actively in several stressful domains by completing the Stress Coping Hating Scales (Korean). Their social adjustments were measured in areas like peer relationship, family relationship, and conformity with Social Adjustment Scales (Korean). The final examination scores were used to rate children’s Academic Achievements. Finally Korean version of Achenbach’s Child Behavior Check List were completed by parents. As results, girls were found to use more defensive strategies to cope stress, showed more conformity and withdrawn behaviors and achieved higher scores academically than boys. Generally younger children tended to adjust better socially than older children. As children grew older they used more and more defensive strategies to cope with everyday stress. Also older children showed more withdrawn behavior and aggressive behavior than younger children. As anticipated children who used more defensive coping strategies were reported to have more behavior problems, showed poorer social adjustments and academic achievements. Children who used more active coping strategies, on the other hands, were reported to haute less behavior problems, adjusted better socially and had better academia achievements. Finally children who adjusted better socially and had high academic achievements were reported to have less behavior problems.

  • The study investigates the effects of online instructional facilitator's qualities on student performance of online class activities. The study explores the roles of instructional facilitators who may influence student performance of online class activities and their academic achievement. The study employs a set of aggregated data from 1,362 subjects and 10 facilitators who participated in multiple online classes. The results of independent samples t-test reveal that the student performance in online classes has no association with facilitators' educational background or academic degree, as well as demographic characteristics, student evaluation records and instructional achievement. The results of multiple regression analysis show that the facilitator engagement has a positive relation to the enhancement of student interaction, reading discussion messages, and the quality of discussion messages in online discussions. The results of correlation analysis show that the facilitator engagement has a positive impact on both increasing the number of reading discussion messages and enhancing the quality of discussion messages. The facilitator engagement increases the quantity of reading discussion postings and enhances the quality of discussion messages, which would be a substantial contribution to student performance by facilitators. The findings suggest that student performance and academic achievement in online classes are not independent of facilitator engagement.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of family-school relations on children's school adjustment with divorced mothers. Subcategories of the family-school relations were family participation in decision making, family help for schools, learning activities at home, school help for families, and school-home communication adopted from Epstein's parent involvement theory. Sub categories of children's school adjustment were delinquent behavior and academic achievement. The sample of this study included 3,367 children from first to fifth grade who lived either in a two-parent or one-parent home. Among them, 411 children with divorced mothers were analyzed. Independent t-test, Pearson's correlations, stepwise regression analysis were all conducted. Findings suggested that children with divorced mothers showed higher delinquency and lower academic achievement than children in intact families. Sub categories of family involvement and school involvement were correlated in divorced families. Children's delinquency was predicted by three of the family-school relation factors, which were school-home communication, family help for schools, and school help for families. Children's academic achievement was predicted by ail factors.

  • This reach is to comprehend the trend of father-related studies in Korea. The result of analyzing 161 father related thesis published from first issue until 2015.12 issue on 9 journals came out as below. First, father-thesis have increased. But the proportion of it remains for only 1~2% out of total 9 academic journals. Also the increased amount is very small considering the increasing rate of mother-thesis. In other words, the increased number of father-thesis is due to increased number of total amount of academic journals, which cannot be interpreted as the academic interest about fathering has grown. Second, almost of father-thesis were the empirical research and quantitative approach took the most part. Also father-thesis focus on 'what father's role is' and 'how much he does it'. Due to generalization of double-income family and an increase of interest about fathering, operational definition and a measurement issue is growing. Third, the topic of research which handles influence of father to child ranges from social relationship to social and emotional development. Also an interest of awarness development is growing. Meanwhile, research of father's influence to child development depends on cross-sectional data. Only few used vertical material.
