  • The purpose of this study is to explore the linguistic elements that can promote academic literacy in terms of content-based instructions for KSL learners. In order to study the characteristics of learning languages for subjects, focus was given to the framework of systematic functional linguistics that has been extensively used in ELL teaching and learning research in the United States and Australia. History, which is taught in all classes and classified as a required course, was the subject of analysis. From the history curriculum, the elementary school level texts "Social Studies 5-2" and "Social Studies 6-1" were chosen for the analysis. Based on the results, we can come to the following conclusions. First, history textbooks are divided into narrative and analytical explanatory sub-genres based on their content, and there are differences in the factors that need to be focused on to find the main information. Second, the vocabulary of history textbooks should focus on the use of verbs which comprehend material processes. Particularly, learners should pay attention to the differences in meaning between low-frequency expressions. We hope that the results of this study will have a positive effect on history subject learning for learners in the "Adaptive Korean Course" and will help establish direction in terms of building curriculum contents for KSL learners.

  • A brief history of the Korean Meteorological Society (KMS) is presented for the 60-year period (1963~2022). And academic activities during the period are examined to evaluate their contributions to the achievement of the KMS's goal, that is, the advance of meteorology and circulation of meteorological knowledge. Membership of the KMS was less than 300 before 1990, but increased fast afterwards, exceeding 1000, 2000 and 3000 in 2002, 2014 and 2019, respectively. After 1990, 11 professional committees were set up gradually and played important roles in the advances of professional fields. Size of the KMS budget grew gradually in the 1990s and faster during the 2000s, showing fluctuations in the 2010s. The KMS has been quite active in academic activities such as academic journals, domestic and international conferences, and book publishing. The Journal of the KMS (JKMS) has led the advance of meteorology in Korea since the beginning of the KMS, while "Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences", which succeeded the JKMS in 2008, has been showing significant paper contributions from scientists around the world and increase of impact factor. Total number of presentations in the regular KMS conferences for the 2010s is 5 times larger than that for the 1990s, with a significant diversification of subject area. Internationally, the trilateral conference of the meteorological societies of Korea, China and Japan had been held since 2005. In 2015, the 3 societies stopped the conference and, instead, launched "Asian Conference on Meteorology". Meanwhile, the KMS has published glossaries, dictionaries, and textbooks of atmospheric sciences.

Methods: The subject of this study was 76 freshmen and 74 sophomores of dental technician major in an anonymous college. Results from the questionnaire called K-vision diagnosis program were computed by means of t-test, One-Way ANOVA, and correlation analysis. Results: 1. Of the five categories concerned with the drop out intention, complain in college satisfaction(50.12points) was the highest and department satisfaction(47.51points) was the lowest. Of 16 subcategories, complaining in administrative supporting system proved the highest as 50.80 points and Inquiry to Professor the lowest(45.56 points). 2. Among the general characteristic gender (p<. 01), student group (p<.01), and credit (p<.05) made a meaningful statistical difference; no statistical significance was found in grade, admission, and dwellings. 3. Of the five categories, statistical significance was shown as follows; Department satisfaction (p<.01), College satisfaction (p<.05) under gender, Department satisfaction (p<.05) in grade, Academic integration (p<.01), Department satisfaction (p<.01) in credit. No statistical meaning was found in admission and dwellings. 4. Statistical significance was found under 16 subcategories as follows: Career identification(p<.01), Academic support system(p<.01), Social activity II(p<.05) in gender area, Inquiry to professor(p<.01), Learning(p<.05), Understanding learning I(p<.05) in grade area, Learning(p<.001), Career identification(p<.001), Understanding learning I(p<.01), Understanding learning II(p<.01), Inquiry to professor (p<.01), Learning ability (p<.05), Occupation (p<.05), Social Activity II(p<.05), Administrative support system (p<.05) in student group area, Credit (p<.001), Career identification (p<.01), Understanding learning I(p<.05) in credit area; admission and dwellings was statistically meaningless. 5. Of the 5 categories academic integration (r=.766) was most relevant to the dropout intention of the subjects and followed by department satisfaction (r=.735), college satisfaction (r=.554), service acceptability (r=.373), and statistical significance was shown as p<.01. Conclusion: Considering the results of this study, we are in a pressing need for the introduction of policies and programmes aiming at preventing the dropout rates of the dental technician majors at college. In tandem with this, qualitative and viable human resource management of the dental technicians should be implemented.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effect of depression, life stress and resilience on quality of life among middle-aged women. Methods: A descriptive correlation study design was used with a convenience sample consisting of 201 middle-aged women recruited from an urban area. SPSS 21.0 was used for a descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlations and multiple-regression analysis. Results: Quality of life had a significant positive correlation with resilience(r=.53, p<.001) and negative correlation with life stress(r=-.27, p<.001). The significant factors for quality of life were resilience (B=.425, p<.001) marital-status (B=.227, p=.001) and health status (B=-216, p=.001). These factors explained 36.8% of the variance in quality of life. Conclusions: In conclusion, to promote quality of life middle-aged women, there is a need to develop an intervention program to improve resilience.
