  • In order to investigate the effect of tail state on the electrical and the optical properties in amorphous IGZO(a-IGZO), a-IGZO films were deposited at room temperature on fused silica substrats using pulsed laser deposition method. The laser pulse energy was used as the processing parameter. In-situ post annealing was carried out at $150^{\circ}C$ right after the film deposition. The $O_2$ partial pressure during the deposition and the post annealing was fixed to 10mTorr. The carrier mobility of the a-IGZO films had a range from 2 to $18\;cm^2/Vs$ at carrier concentrations greater than $10^{18}\;cm^{-3}$. As the laser energy density increased, the Hall mobility increased. And post annealing improved the Hall mobility, as well. The optical property was examined using the ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The a-IGZO films that have low Hall mobility exhibited stronger and broader absorption tails in >3.0 eV region. Post annealing reduced the intensity of the tail-like absorption. The absorption tail in a-IGZO films is an important factor which affects the electrical and the optical properties.

  • Time resolved infrared IR absorption spectroscopy is carried out to investigate the dynamics of electric field induced reorientation of the biphenyl molecular core and alkyl tail sub-fragments of the nematic liquid crystal 5CB (4-pentyl-4-cyano-biphenyl). The planar to homeotropic transition for high pre-tilt planar aligned cells, is studied for switching times ranging from 200 ${\mu}sec$ down to 80 ${\mu}sec$, the latter a factor of 1000 times faster than any previous nematic IR study. The reorientation rates of the core and tail are found to be the same to within experimental error and scale inversely with applied field squared, as expected for the balance of field and viscous torques. Thus any molecular conformation change during switching must relax on a shorter time scale. A simple model shows that no substantial differences exist between the reorientational dynamics of the tails and cores on the time scales longer than on the order of 10 ${\mu}s$.

  • About 10 percent of quasars are known to exhibit deep broad absorption troughs blueward of prominent permitted emission lines, which are usually attributed to the existence of outflows slightly above he accretion disk around the supermassive black hole. Typical widths up to 0.2c of these absorption roughs indicate the velocity scales in which special relativistic effects may not be negligible. Under he assumption of the ubiquity of the broad absorption line region in quasars, the broad emission line flux will exhibit Thomson scattered components from these fast outflows. In this paper, we provide our Monte Carlo calculation of linear polarization of singly Thomson scattered line radiation with the careful considerations of special relativistic effects. The scattering region is approximated by a collection of rings that are moving outward with speeds ${\upsilon}=c{\beta}<0.2c$ near the equatorial plane, and the scattered line photons are collected according to its direction and wavelength in the observer's rest frame. We find that the significantly extended red tail appears in the scattered radiation. We also find that the linear degree of polarization of singly Thomson scattered line radiation is wavelength-dependent and hat there are significant differences in the linear degree of polarization from that computed from classical physics in the far red tail. We propose that the semi-forbidden broad emission line C III]1909 may be significantly contributed from Thomson scattering because this line has small resonance scattering optical depth in the broad absorption line region, which leads to distinct and significant polarized flux in this broad emission line.

  • Poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) was synthesized by use of FeCl$_3$ as a oxidizing agent at $25^{\circ}C$. The infrared spectrum of our polymer gave good evidence for the conjugation of 3-hexylthiophene monomer unit. P3HT contains the HT(head-to-tail) linkage larger than 64% based on NMR analysis. Electronic absorption and photoluminescence studies show that cast films of P3HT have three exciting state. Absorption spectrum was separated with three maximum peaks by Giese-French method and shifted to the shorter wavelength with increasing temperature. Separated absorption spectrum of P3HT is well adapted to PL peak appeared at longer wavelength. Low temperature PL spectrum is well separated at 669nm, 733nm and 812nm.

  • A reversible scalar phenomena in amorphous As$_{40}$ Ge$_{10}$ Se$_{15}$ S$_{35}$ have been investigated by blue-pass-filtered Hg lamp and He-Ne laser. Annealing causes the shift of the absorption edge to shelter wavelengths approximately 0.17ev, also illumination moves it to longer wavelengths about 0.05 ~ 0.07eV and it increases the refractive index maximum 0.3. Therefore the thermalbleaching(TB) and photodarkening(PD) effects have been understood by the results related to optical absorption characteristics. TB could be estimated as increasing the stabilization of amorphous chalcogenide films since absorption slope of extended regions(U) was not changed by annealing. On the other hand, PD could be understood as due to the enhancement of disorder since the slope of Urbach’s tail(1/F) around an absorption edge were decreased by illumination.ion.n.

  • Perylene bisimide derivatives are developed for red organic phosphor because of their advantages, such as excellent luminous efficiency and high thermal stability. Despite these advantages, they have poor solubility characteristics in organic solvents and short emission wavelength as red organic phosphor for hybrid light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this study, we prepared terrylene bisimide using a coupling reaction and swallow-tail imide group, which has excellent solubility. The structures and properties of swallow-tail terrylene bisimide (9C) were analyzed using 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), UV/Vis spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The maximum absorption wavelength of (9C) in the UV/Vis spectrum was 647 nm, and the maximum emission wavelength was 676 nm. In the TGA, (9C) demonstrated good thermal stability with less than 5 wt% weight loss up to 415℃. In the solubility test, (9C) has a good solubility of more than 5 wt% in chloroform and dichloromethane. When the compounds (9C) were mixed with PMMA (polymethly methacrylate), the films showed peaks at 680 nm in the PL spectra. The results verify the suitability of (9C) as a red organic phosphor for hybrid LEDs.

  • Although perylene bisimide derivatives have advantages such as excellent thermal stability and high luminance efficiency, they have poor solubility characteristics in organic solvents. In this research, in order to improve the solubility characteristics, we prepared perylene bisimide derivatives (1C) and (2C) with swallow-tail substituted imide, which is known to lead to excellent solubility. The structures and properties of swallow-tail perylene bisimide (1C) and (2C) were analyzed by $^1H-NMR$, FT-IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The maximum absorption wavelengths of (1C) and (2C) in the UV/Vis spectrum were 558 nm and 556 nm, respectively, and the maximum emission wavelengths were 602 nm and 600 nm, respectively. In the TGA, (1C) demonstrated good thermal stability with less than 5 wt% weight loss up to $242^{\circ}C$. In the solubility test, (1C) and (2C) exhibited solubilities of more than 5 wt% in chloroform, ethyl acetate, and dimethylformamide, but not in methanol. When the compounds (1C) and (2C) were mixed with PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), thin films showed peaks at 679 nm and 677 nm, respectively, in the photoluminescence spectra. (1C) was found to be a possible candidate as red organic phosphor for hybrid LEDs.

  • In this study, we investigated the thickness dependence of thermal bleaching(TB) effect as well as photo-induced scalar phenomena, such as photodrakening(PD) effect and photorefraction(PR) change, in chalcogenide A $s_{40}$ G $e_{10}$S $e_{15}$ $S_{35}$ thin films. We found that when these films were exposed for 15 minutes using blue-pass filtered Hg lamp(~4300$\AA$) after annealing for 30 minutes around the glass transition temperature Tg(20$0^{\circ}C$), the refractive index change ($\Delta$n) was varied up to 0.02~0.46 according to each thickness condition and the optical energy gap ($\Delta$ $E_{op}$ ) was shifted to a longer wavelength of approximately 0.67eV, especially for 1000$\AA$-thickness. Also, the TB PD effects have been understood by the results related to optical absorption characteristics. The TB effect could be estimated as increasing the stabilization of amorphous chalcogenide films since absorption slope of extended regions(U) was not changed by annealing. On the other hand, the PD effect could be understood as due to the enhancement of disorder since U and the slope of Urbachs tail(1/F) around an absorption edge were decreased by exposing.ing.n edge were decreased by exposing.

  • Absorption and luminescence characteristics of disperse red-19 (DR-19) and $TiO_2$ composite have been investigated with various poling electric field strengths. Two step synthetic processes were employed to employ the DR-19 to the $TiO_2$ sol-gel. Firstly, urethane bond formation between DR-19 (-OH) and 3-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane (ICPTES, -N=C=O) performed (ICPDR) prior incorporation to the $TiO_2$ sol-gel. Secondary, the hydrolysis of the ethoxy group from the ICPTES and condensation reaction between silanol groups from ICPTES and $TiO_2$ sol-gel were performed. The ICPDR and $TiO_2$ sol-gel ($DRTiO_2$) were mixed and stirred for several days. The composite was coated to the ITO coated glass substrate. Corona poling were performed before drying the composite with various electric field strengths. The absorption intensity decreased with the increase of the poling field strength, which resulted in the increase of poling efficiency. The photoluminescence also decreased as the poling field strength increased. There is long luminescence tail for the poled $DRTiO_2$ film compared with unpoled $DRTiO_2$ film. The luminescence long tail indicates that the self-trapped excitons and polarons were generated when the $DRTiO_2$ film was poled with electric field.

  • Polarized Fourier transform infrared (IR) absorption is used to probe molecular conformation in a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) during the reorientation induced by the external field. Spectra of planar aligned cells of FLC W314 are measured as functions of IR polarizer orientation and electric field applied to the FLC. The time evolution of the dichroism of the absorbance due to biphenyl core and alkyl tail molecular vibration modes, is observed. Static IR dichroism experiments show a W314 dichroism structure in which the principal axis of dielectric tensor from molecular core vibration are tilted further from the smectic layer normal than those of the tail. This structure indicates the effective binding site in which the molecules are confined in the Sm-C phase has, on average, "zig-zag" shape and this zig-zag binding site structure is rigidly maintained while the molecular axis rotates about the layer normal during field-induced switching.
