  • Reliable and accurate method of computationally aided design processes of advanced thin walled structures in automotive industries are much essential for the efficient usage of smart materials, that possess higher energy absorption in dynamic compression loading. In this paper, most versatile components i.e., thin walled crash tubes with different geometrical profiles are introduced in view of mitigating the impact of varying cross section in crash behavior and energy absorption characteristics. Apart from the geometrical parameters such as length, diameter and thickness, the non-dimensionalized parameters of average forces which control the plastic bending moment for varying thickness has explored in view of quantifying its impact on the crashworthiness of the structure. The explicit finite element code ABAQUS is utilized to conduct the numerical studies to examine the effect of parametric modifications in crash behavior and energy absorption. Also the simulation results are experimentally validated. It is evident that the circular cross-sectional tubes are preferable as high collision impact shock absorbers due to their ability in withstanding axial and oblique impact loads effectively. Furthermore, the specific energy absorption (SEA), crash force efficiency (CFE), plastic bending moment, peak force responses and its impact for optimally tailoring a design to cater the crashworthiness requirements are investigated. The primary outcome of the study is to provide sufficient information on circular tubes for the use of energy absorbers where impact oblique loading is expected.

  • We compared absorption and adsorption rates of air pollutants by plants to eveluate the difference of absorption capacity of plant species and kinds of air pollutants, when foilage plants were exposed to $O_3$ and $SO_2$ singly and combiningly. Absorption and adsorption rates of three foliage plants exposed to $O_3$ and $SO_2$ singly and in combination varied a little according to plant species and kinds of air pollutants. But total absorption rate of Spathiphyllum patinii and Ficus benjamina was higher, and it was lower in Pachira aquatica. When exposed to $O_3$ and $SO_2$ at the same concentration, Pachira aquatica absorbed more $O_3$ than $SO_2$, in contrast to Ficus benjamina absorbing more $SO_2$. On the other hand, Spathiphyllum patinii absorbed as much $O_3$ as $SO_2$. Physiological activities were measured since absorption rates were affected by physiological characteristics of plants. Spathiphyllum patinii and Ficus benjamina showed higher photosynthetic and transpiration rates, and Pachira aquatica showed lower values. And diffusive and stomatal resistences of Pachira aquatica were higher than those of two other species. These results showed that absorption capacity was affected by the differences of physiological characteristics. Absorption capacity of air pollutants increased in plants, such as Spathiphyllum patinii and Ficus benjamina, which had high $SO_2$ absorption rate. We found that plants showing high $CO_2$ absorption rates absorb a lot of air pollutnats.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the in vitro and in vivo moisturizing properties and percutaneous absorption of PEG-impregnated Aloe vera gel. The PEG-i-Aloe gel was obtained from dewatering and impregnation by soaking (DIS) of Aloe vera leaf slice. The moisturizing property of the obtained sample was evaluated by moisture determination using gravimetric method in desiccator under different RH% and by water sorption-desorption test on human skin. The transdermal penetration characteristics of PEG-i-Aloe gel was investigated by Franz diffusion cell in vitro transdermal absorption method. PEG-i-Aloe gel had high moisture retention ability and could significantly lead the enhancing skin hydration status as well as reducing the skin water loss due to the film formation as a skin barrier. The skin penetration rate of PEGi- Aloe gel at steady state was 9.76 ${\mu}g/(h{\cdot}cm^2)$ and the quantity of the transdermal absorption was 144 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ in 9 hr. The penetration mechanism was well fitted with Higuchi model ($R^2$ = 0.974-0.994). The results show that PEG-i-Aloe gel has the significant moisturizing effect and strong penetration of the animal skin. It could be used as the moisturizing additive in cosmetic skin products.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated EM wave absorbers using Sendust, $Al(OH)_3$ and CPE(Chlorinated Polyethylene). We compared the absorption properties of samples containing 0 wt.%, 3 wt.%, 5 wt.%, 7 wt.% of $Al(OH)_3$. The optimized composition ratio of $Al(OH)_3$ is 5 wt.%, and the absorption property curve just has the tendency to improve at 5 wt.% of $Al(OH)_3$. And we used this characteristics to design the double-layered EM wave absorber. The double-layered EM wave absorber has thickness of 2 mm and has absorption ability more than 18.5 dB at a wireless LAN frequency band using 2.4 GHz.

  • The aim of this study was to elucidate the difference in the amount of phytochemicals and anti-oxidant activities of the freeze-dried 5th instar 3rd day silkworm powder (FDSP) and 7 HongJams (HJs). Three primary colors of light of 8 silkworm powders revealed why each sample had unique color. The visual and absorption spectrum analyses of 80% methanol (MeOH) extracts of 8 silkworm powders revealed that white jade (WJ)-FDSP extracts showing strong forest-green colors had different absorption spectrum from 7 HJs. Among 7 HJs, the absorption spectrum of light green silkworm (LGS)-HJ extract was different from those of other HJ extracts. The amounts of total flavonoids and phenolic compounds of WJ-FDSP were 423.0±9.21% and 252.3±12.86%, respectively, more than those of WJ-HJ. Among 7 HJs, the amounts of total flavonoids and phenolic compounds in LGS-and red silkorm (RS)-HJ extracts were significantly more than those of WJ-HJ extract. Consistent with the amounts of phytochemicals, radical scavenging activity and reducing ability of WJ-FDSP extract were significantly higher that other HJ extracts. Among 7 silkworm powder extracts, LGS-HJ extract showed significantly higher radical scavenging activity and reducing ability than those of WJ-HJ extract. But, RS-HJ extract only showed significantly higher radical scavenging activity than that of WJ-HJ extract. Taken together, the amounts of phytochemicals in 8 silkworm powders contributed on their colors and anti-oxidant activities.

  • Metallic sandwich plate with a truss core has metallic inner structures which have low relative density between a pair of metal skin sheets or face sheets. In this work, low impact tests have been carried out to examine the behavior of sandwich plates with a pyramidal truss core. For the low velocity impact, the impact apparatus of drop weight type has been fabricated. From the results of the experiments, maximum energy absorption is found to happen when the upper sheet fails. The sandwich plate loses its absorption ability as soon as the inner structures have been crashed completely and optimal core thickness has existed to maximize energy absorption. Comparing the metallic sandwich plate with the monocoque plate, the absorbed energy has been improved up to 160 % and the deflection decreased by up to 76%. As a result, the metallic sandwich plate with a truss core is shown to have good material for impact resistance and energy absorption.

  • Characteristics of carbonized fiberboard such as chemical materials absorption, electromagnetic shielding, and electrical and mechanical performance were determined in previous studies. The carbonized board therefore confirmed that having excellent abilities of these characteristics. In this study, the effect of density on physical properties and sound absorption properties of carbonized fiberboards at $800^{\circ}C$ were investigated for the potential use of carbonized fiberboards as a replacement of conventional sound absorbing material. The thickness of fiberboards after carbonization was reduced 49.9%, 40.7%, and 43.3% in low density fiberboard (LDF), medium density fiberboard (MDF), and high density fiberboard (HDF), respectively. Based on SEM images, porosity of carbonized fiberboard increased by carbonization due to removing adhesives. Moreover, carbonization did not destroy structure of wood fiber based on SEM results. Carbonization process influenced contraction of fiberboard. The sound absorption coefficient of carbonized low density fiberboard (c-LDF) was higher than those of carbonized medium density fiberboard (c-MDF) and carbonized high density fiberboard (c-HDF). This result was similar with original fiberboards, which indicated sound absorbing ability was not significantly changed by carbonization compared to that of original fiberboards. Therefore, the sound absorbing coefficient may depend on source, texture, and density of fiberboard rather than carbonization.

  • The study analyzes the forest status of each local government for Korean forests and believes that it can be used as basic data for setting the direction pursued by each local government. The study took into account the fact that the forest rate in Korea was 63.5%, because it was judged that the higher the proportion of forest area, the more important it was to use the characteristics of forests. The characteristics of forests were analyzed based on four factors in 12 factors to identify the location of the ground body by dividing seven types. In addition, basic information on carbon absorption sources was provided by grasping the ability of carbon absorption sources per year through the amount of forest resources to be analyzed. In addition, as a result of analyzing the characteristics of the weather for the promotion of carbon absorption sources, the flat area on the side of Gangneung Mountain was a warm forest with a warm index of 106.0.

  • This thesis is concerned with basic research for development of EM wave absorbers in sheet type for mobile phones. By controlling the sendust ratio, the $Al(OH)_3$ coating, the thickness, the kind of binders, EM wave absorbers were prepared and examined. Centeral frequency shifts toward lower with increasing thickness of the absorber, and absorption ability controlled to adjust Sendust amount. The absorption band of the EM wave absorber coated with $Al(OH)_3$ becomes larger than that of non-coated one. Sendust composite microwave absorbers mixed with CPE were prepared at $70^{\circ}C$ in temperature. The fabricated EM wave absorbers show a reflection coefficient 5.56 dB at 1.8 GHz in thickness of 0.85 mm.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate performance evaluation of absorbing and fast-drying fabric after washing. In the comparison of absorption and fast-drying properties, there was slight difference among the materials depending on thickness, weight, and fabric structure. Absorption speed of the materials depended on the frequency of washing which might be caused by modification of fabric structure or composition fiber due to friction during washing. The ability of fast-drying of the materials was gradually decreased with the increase of washing frequency, which might be caused by fatigue accumulation on inner fiber and structural change or destruction with friction during washing.
