Electrical appliances such as audiovisual equipment and personal computers have recently had heat and electromagnetic problems. In order to solve those problems, 'High heat absorbing pre-painted steel sheet (hereinafter referred to as PSS)', 'High electromagnetic shielding PSS' and 'High heat absorbing and high electromagnetic shielding PSS' have been developed. In this paper, the heat characteristics and electromagnetic shielding properties of PSS are investigated by methods that use enclosures and their mechanisms are discussed. It was found that 'High heat absorbing PSS' and 'High heat absorbing and high electromagnetic shielding PSS'could reduce the heat problem. The mechanism of the heat characteristics was presumed for the high heat absorptivity of the back coating inside the enclosure. And it was also found that 'High electromagnetic shielding PSS' and 'High heat absorbing and high electromagnetic shielding PSS' could shield electromagnetic waves well. The mechanism of the electromagnetic shielding properties was considered for the low transfer impedance of the back coating inside the enclosure. 'High heat absorbing PSS' and 'High electromagnetic shielding PSS' have been adopted as materials for electrical appliances and 'High electromagnetic shielding and high heat absorbing PSS' have been tested for that purpose.
A duplex stainless steel sheet with 1 wt.% gadolinium was fabricated for a neutron absorbing material with high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and low cost as well as high neutron absorption capability. The microstructure of the as-cast specimen has typical duplex phases including 31% ferrite and 69% austenite. Main alloy elements like chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and gadolinium (Gd) are relatively uniformly distributed in the matrix. Gadolinium rich precipitates were present in the grains and at the grain boundaries. The solution treatment at $1070^{\circ}$ for 50 minutes followed by the hot-rolling above $950^{\circ}$ after keeping the sheet at $1200^{\circ}$ for 1.5 hours are important points of the optimum condition to produce a 6 mm-thick plate without cracking.
In this paper, the microwave absorbing characteristics after the impact of the radar-absorbing structure (RAS) consisting of periodic pattern sheet (PPS) and glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) were experimentally investigated. The fabricated RAS effectively absorbed the microwave in the X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz). In order to induce the damage to the RAS, a low-velocity impact test with various impact energy of 15, 40, and 60 J was conducted. Afterward, the impact damage was observed by using visual inspection, non-destructive test, and image processing method. Moreover, the absorbing performance of intact and damaged RAS was measured by the free-space measurement system. The experiment results revealed that the delamination damage from the impact energy of 15 J did not considerably affect the microwave absorbing performance of the RAS. However, fiber breakage and penetration damage with a relatively large damaged area were occuured when the impact energy was increased up to 40 J and 60 J, and these failures significantly degraded the microwave absorbing characteristics of the RAS.

In this paper, the modeling and simulation of infrared absorption in an infrared absorbing structure with the cascaded transmission line model were carried out. Each layer in the infrared absorbing structure can be modeled as a characteristic impedance of the cascaded transmission line model. The simulation results show that the cavity thickness to get a maximum absorption should be less than a quarter wavelength, which is somewhat different from prevalent thickness. It can be assured that the sheet resistance of an absorbing layer to get a maximum absorption is $377{\Omega}/{\square}$, that the thickness of the absorbing layer dose not affect the spectral characteristics of absorption. It is also shown that the thickness of the active layer is not critical to the IR absorption. It can also be assured that the validation of this modeling is proved in comparison with the previous results from similar absorbing structures.

Previous experimental results performed by many researchers for a couple of decades in South Korea have shown that an absorbing sheet inserted in a conventional floating slab system for thermal insulation or vibration absorption may amplify the vibration of the slab system at specific frequency ranges depending on the material properties of the sheet. The amplified vibration, consequently, results in the heavy weight floor impact noise exceeding the sound level limit for an apartment house, 50 dB. In this study, the amplification mechanism is examined through numerical analysis and a new slab system is proposed to reduce the amplification and control the noise. The new slab system consists of studs connecting the base slab and upper concrete finishing yielding the dramatically increased stiffness of the slab. The numerical simulation is performed to investigate the effect of the slab system with studs on the vibration and noise control. The results show that the performance of the slab is sensitive to the number and location of studs, and the heavy weight floor impact noise can be reduced up to 6~7 dB compared to the conventional slab system at the optimal stud location.

This paper reports on a study of LiNiZn-ferrite composite as a radiation absorbent material (RAM). The electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers are composed of an EM wave absorbing material and a polymeric binder. The surface morphology, chemical composition, weight percent of the ferrite composite of the toroid sample, magnetic properties, and return loss are investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and network analyzer. For preparing the absorbing sheet, chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) is used as a polymeric binder. The EM wave absorption properties of the prepared samples were studied at 4 - 8 GHz. We can confirm the effects of the thickness of the samples for absorption properties. An absorption bandwidth of more than a 10-dB return loss shifts toward a lower frequency range along with an increase in the thickness of the absorber.

Attenuation of conduction noise through microstrip line attached with the high lossy iron flakes-rubber composites has been investigated in GHz frequencies. Microstrip line was designed with characteristic impedance of 50 $\Omega$ and a length corresponding to the center frequency of 3 GHz. Iron flakes were fabricated by mechanical forging of spherical iron powders using an attrition mill. The fabricated microstrip line shows a ideal propagation characteristics of S$\sub$11/ < -60 dB and S$\sub$21/ = 0 dB. Attaching a noise absorbing sheet on the microstrip line, S$\sub$11/ increases to about -10 dB and S$\sub$21/ decreases to -20~-60 dB depending on the length of absorbing sheet. The calculated power loss is as high as 80% in the frequency range 2~8 GHz. It is suggested that the most critical material parameter is magnetic loss for the enhancement of noise attenuation.

An electromagnetic (EM) wave absorber reduces the possibility of radar detection by minimizing the radar cross section (RCS) of structures. In this study, a radar absorbing structure (RAS) was applied to the leading edge of a blended wing body aircraft to reduce RCS in X-band (8.2~12.4GHz) radar. The RAS was composed of a periodic pattern resistive sheet with conductive lossy material and glass-fiber/epoxy composite as a spacer. The applied RAS is a multifunctional composite structure which has both electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbing ability and load-bearing ability. A two dimensional unit absorber was designed first in a flat-plate shape, and then the fabricated leading edge structure incorporating the above RAS was investigated, using simulated and free-space measured reflection loss data from the flat-plate absorber. The leading edge was implemented on the aircraft, and its RCS was measured with respect to various azimuth angles in both polarizations (VV and HH). The RCS reduction effect of the RAS was evaluated in comparison with a leading edge of carbon fabric reinforced plastics (CFRP). The designed leading edge structure was examined through static structural analysis for various aircraft load cases to check structural integrity in terms of margin of safety. The mechanical and structural characteristics of CFRP, RAS and CFRP with RAM structures were also discussed in terms of their weight.
The amorphous $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$(at%) alloy strip was pulverized using a jet mill and an attrition mill to get flake-shaped powder. The flake powder was mixed with dielectric $BaTiO_3$ powder and its dispersant to increase the permittivity. The powders covered with dielectric powders and its dispersant were mixed with a binder and a solvent and then tape-cast to form sheets. The absorbing properties of the sheets were measured to investigate the roles of the dielectric powder and its dispersant. The results showed that the addition of $BaTiO_3$ powders and its dispersant improved the absorbing properties of the sheets noticeably. The powder sheet mixed with 5 wt% of $BaTiO_3$ powder and 1 wt% of dispersant showed the best electromagnetic wave absorption rate because of the increase of the permittivity and the electrical resistance.
