The pupose of this study on the surface finishing is to examine the performance of brushing as a means of reducing the surface roughness of the precision theaded shafts in ball screw assemblies. Ball screws provide superior performance compared to other types of screw feeds in terms of static and dynamic rolling resistance, backlash, and wear characteristics. The Reduction of the surface roughness of the lead shaft in ball screw assembiles is essential for precision movement, high speed/low noise tracel, and for low wear/long life. To reduce machine dependent errors that would influence the surface roughness compared with other lapping or polishing techniques, experiments will be performed using special wire brushes to polish precision ground shafts. The best results were obtained using the Al /sab 2/O /sab3/ brushes, with the Al /sab 2/O /sab3/ #500 grit brush producing a surface finish of approximately 0.7 .mu.m, and the Al /sab 2/O /sab3/ #600 grit producing a surface finish of approximately 0.8 .mu.m. Both of these results were produced at the highest wheel polishing speed of 3520 rpm. The SiC #500 brush produced a surface roughness of approximately 1 .mu.m at 3520 rpm.
In this research, we experimentally investigated the sealing performance of elastomeric rotary lip seals for washing machines. In general, NBR is used as a material for elastomeric rotary lip seals in washing machines, but the mixing formula of the rubber material can affect the sealing performance. In this study, we manufactured rotary lip seals using three kinds of NBRs with a different mixing formula, and examined the sealing performance using an acceleration test mode. The results of an SEM investigation into the surfaces of three kinds of specimens showed a much smaller wear volume and better sealing performance for the specimens with smaller particle sizes of mixing composition than for the specimen with the larger. Repeated deformation and recovery by the shaft-to-seal eccentricity on rotation were shown to cause a phase difference in the rubber material, and we measured the recovery ratio to find the influence of this phase difference on the sealing performance. As another method for checking the phase difference, we also measured tan ä, and a lower tan ä was revealed as the recovery ratio increased for each specimen. Specimens with a higher recovery ratio (lower tan ä) were shown to have a better sealing performance. Consequently, specimens with a smaller particle size in the mixing composition had a better sealing performance because they show a higher recovery ratio.

In this study, experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of grinding and wear process of diamond wheel far ceramic materials. Normal component of grinding resistance of $Al_2$O$_3$ was less then that of $Si_3 N_4$ and $ZrO_2$. This seems to be the characteristics of ceramic tools on work pieces both of high hardness. For the case of $Si_3 N_4$ and $ZrO_2$, as the mesh number of wheel increases, the surface roughness decreases. For the case of $Al_2 O_3$, the surface roughness does not decreases. Specific binding energy decreases as the material removal rate per unit time increases. For the case of $Si_3 N_4$ and $ZrO_2$, grinding is carried out by abrasive wear processes. For the case of $Al_2 O_3$, grinding is carried out by grain shedding process due to brittle fracture.

Most machines lose a lot of energy due to friction. Wear due to friction also reduces performance. Therefore, it is important to reduce friction on the surface to improve energy efficiency and decrease wear. Surface texturing refers to making patterns on the surface for reducing friction. There are many surface texturing methods, such as using lasers, abrasive jet machining, and so on. Recently, mechanical manufacturing methods, such as cutting and grinding, have been highlighted. Among them, the grinding method has the advantage of making patterns in large areas quickly. Therefore, it is appropriate for surface texturing on large machines. This paper is a study on the slope change of the surface texturing pattern using grinding. Therefore, we researched the slopes of the patterns corresponding to "spindle speed and feed rate" and "curvature of workpiece surface" using a mathematical model and experiment. As a result, we made a proper mathematical model concerning our research. Therefore, using the mathematical model in this paper, we could predict the slope change of the pattern according to grinding conditions.

The economic loss arisen from the abrasion wear have been increasing at every industrial field. To reduce the economic loss we developed a new process, which is named MAHa process(Metallic Adhesives for HArdening). MAHa process is a process to weld tungsten carbide(WC) to the surface of a plain carbon steel so that it may stay longer under the severe abrasive environment. The depth of the WC layer ranges from 0.5 mm to 5 m. Compared with the conventional technology, arc-augmented welding which bonds WC on the flat surface only, MAHa process has the merits that it can make a robust WC layer on the round or wave- shaped surface also. How to turn the WC powder into a flexible mat is the key technology of the MAHa process. We invented new polymer materials to accomplish such a goal and both the MAHa process and the invented materials were applied for patents. For the application, the inner wall of elbow of Concrete Pump Truck(CPT) was maharized(MAHa process-treated) and the new WC layer on the inner wall was made successfully. The elbow was equipped to a CPT.

Performances of Taekwondo fabrics were evaluated in respect of fiber component. yarn count, weave structure and wearing comfort. As a beginning step, we investigated the present situation of Taekwondo wears by questionnaire from pro and amateur Taekwondo players. Samples employed in this study were cotton/nylon blend fabric that was newly woven for this study as well as fabrics of current Taekwondo wears for sale in the market. Their fundamental properties measured were such as air permeability, water vapor transport. wickability, absorption rate, Qmax values, thermal conductivity, durability, hand value, and etc. In addition, subjective wearing sensations were evaluated using Taekwondo wears made of those fabrics. From the results of the objective measurement and the subjective wearing test, we estimated the total fitness of fabrics as a Taekwondo wear. From the questionnaire we could see that pro players and amateurs wanted highly absorbing, quick drying, and soft-tough and complained abrasive surfaces and static elasticity of current fabrics. In view of the results so far achieved, nylon blended fabrics newly woven in this study, showed better comfort-related properties from both of the objective and subjective tests. It was also represented that finer yams enhanced water absorption and touch, and fabrics with rough surface such as honeycomb weave was superior in wearing comfort as well as aesthetic appearance.
The friction surfaces of mechanical parts are heat-treated or coated with hard materials to minimize wear. Increasing the hardness is a very useful way to reduce abrasive wear. The general Brinell hardness test, which is widely used for metallic materials, is not suitable because it hardly shows any change in hardness when coated with thin films. In this study, we propose a basis for the application of the new Brinell hardness test method to the coated friction surface. An indentation analysis of the rigid sphere and elastic-perfectly plastic materials is performed using a commercial finite element analysis software. The results indicate that their loadto-diameter ratio is the same; the Brinell hardness test method can be applied even when the indenter diameter is on the micrometer scale. In the case of hard coating, it is difficult to calculate Brinell hardness using the diameter of the indentation, but the study revealed, for the first time, that it can be calculated using the depth of the indentation regardless of coating. The change in hardness owing to thin film coating over a wide load range implies that the hardness evaluation method is appropriate. Additional studies on various properties related to the substrate and coating material are required to apply the proposed method.

In this study the fabrication technology and mechanical properties of AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ Composites by squeeze casting process were investigated to develope for application as the piston materials that require good friction, wear resistance, and thermal stability. AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ composistes without a porosity and the break of preform were fabricated at the melt temperature of $740^{\circ}C$, the preform temperature of $500^{\circ}C$, and mold temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ under the applied pressure of $1200kg/cm^2$ as the results of the observation of microstructures. As the results of this study, the tensile strength of AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ composites was not increased linearly with $Al_2O_3$ volume fraction and so it seemed not to agree with the rule of mixture, which had been used often in metal matrix composite. Also the tensile strength after thermal fatigue test was little different from that before the test. Consequently it was thought that AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ composites fabricated under our experimental conditions had a good thermal stability and subsequently a good interface bonding. Wear rate(i.e., volume loss per unit sliding distance) of AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ composites was decreased with $Al_2O_3$ volume fraction and the sliding speed at both room temperature and $250^{\circ}C$ and so there was a good correlation between wear rate and hardness. Also the wear rate of AC/8A20% $Al_2O_3$ composities was obtained the value of $1.65cm^3/cm$ at sliding speed of 1.14m/sec as compared with about $3.0\;{\times}10^{-8}cm^3/cm$ hyereutectie Al-Si alloy(Al-16%Si-2%Cu-1%Fe-1%Ni), which applied presently for piston materials. The wear behavior of $Al_2O_3$ composites was observed to a type of abrasive wear by the SEM view of wear surface.
Al-2%Si-2%Mg alloy containing SiC particle in 20, $70{\mu}m$ were prepared by mean of squeeze casting with various pressure 50, 100, 150 and 220MPa respectively. The specimens were made by casting into $50{\Phi}{\times}100{\ell}$ mold under various squeeze conditions(pressures, pressurizing temperature, particle sizes). Mechanical properties(hardness, tensile strength, elongation and wear characteristics) were evaluated at room temperature with those various fabrication factors. It became feasible to make favorable Al-SiCp composite free from casting defects by the injection of Ar gas during melting and 100MPa pressure squeeze casting. However, pressure of 50MPa was not sufficient to avoid completely porosity formation as a result of precessing and shrinkage during solidification. As the particle size is smaller and the squeeze pressure is higher, the hardness and tensile strength at room temperature are higher. Cell size became smaller gradually with increase of squeeze pressure. With increase of squeeze pressure(MPa), wear behaviors of those composites were changed from adhesive into abrasive wear, and the tendency of above behavior became outstanding with increasing sliding speed. The chemical reaction(4Al+3SiC${\rightarrow}$$Al_4C_3+3Si$) is more accelerated at interface between SiCp and matrix with increase of squeeze pressure. Therefore $Al_4C_3$ intercompound and Si peak intensity is increased at interface.

This paper is concerned with the machinability of fine ceramics(Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$) by using sintered diamond tools. For this purpose, ceramics cutting experiments under various cutting conditions such as cutting speed, feed rate, and others were carried out. The main results are follows : (1) During the cutting of fine ceramics, the used tools were found to be slightly chattering at cutting speed of 70m/min, and at cutting speed of higher than this I found the fine ceramics difficult to be cut. (2) When I used a tool with large nose radius, there occured a small amount of wear on the flank of the tool. However, at the early stage of fine ceramics cutting, the tools with smaller nose radii were required mainly to prevent the chipping of the ceramics. (3) When the materials were dry-cut, the appropriate cutting speel was found to be lower than 40m/min, and when the materials were dry-cut, I could cut them without any difficulty even at the speed of 70m/min, the surface roughness of ceramics cut at the speed of 70m/min was considerly fine. (4) It is generally believed that the principal cutting force is the largest in the case of steels cutting, but I found the thrust cutting force to be larger than any other cutting forces in the case of ceramics cutting.
