This paper presents an evaluation of efficiency on glass precision machining by using abrasive water-jet machine. In this study, problems of conventional water-jet machining are examined experimentally and are analysized numerically. Especially, the reason of whitening on the machined surface of biochip glass is determined. It is found that the mass flow rate of abrasive input and transverse speed of water-jet are key parameters to control the direct machining of micro hole and channel on a glass substrate. Based on results of experimental analysis, possibility of direct fabrication of micro holes and channels on a glass substrate is successfully confirmed.
Honing, lapping, polishing and superfinishing are applied for a precision machining to finish the metal surface, but these precision machining are micro-cutting by hard and micro-abrasive grains. Frictional machining is the new method to finish mirrorlike surface without using those abrasive grains. The frictional machining produces high pressure and high temperature instantly by compressing a tool material against the metal surface in sliding motion. The metal surface is given plastic deformation and plastic flow by the above mentioned frictional motion, but the surface roughness of the metal surface is influenced by physical and chemical reaction in surrounding atmosphere. Therefore, the atmosphere around the metal optimum atmosphere in the frictional machining. The part 1 of the study was performed in liquid atmospheres. Diesel oil, lubricant, grease, lard oil, bean oil and cutting fluid were used as such atmospheres. Medium carbon steel SM 50 C was used as a workpiece and ceramic tip was applied as a frictional tool. The result of the experiment showed characteristic machining conditions to generate the best surface roughness in each atmospheres.
Because of the increasing tool cost for cutting hard-to-cut materials, abrasive water jet (AWJ) milling recently has been regarded as a potential alternative machining method. However, it is difficult to control the depth and width of cut in AWJ milling because they vary depending on many AWJ cutting parameters. On 27 conditions within a limited range of pressure, feed rate, and abrasive flow rate, AWJ cutting was conducted on titanium, and depth profiles were measured with a laser sensor. From the depth profile data, depth and width of cut were acquired at each condition. The relationships between depth and parameters and between width and parameters were derived through regression analysis. The former can provide proper cutting conditions and the latter the proper pick feed necessary to generate a milled surface. It is verified that pressure mostly affects depth, whereas abrasive flow rate mostly affects width.
The old technique of sandblasting which has been used for paint or scale removing, deburring, and glass decorating has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for brittle materials, capable of producing micro structures larger than 100um. A large number of Investigations on the abrasive jet machining with output parameters as material removal rate, penetrate and surface finish have been carried out and reported by various authors. In this paper, we investigated the effect of surface characteristics and surface shape of the abrasive jet machined glass surface under different blasting parameter. and finally we established a model for abrasive flow machining process, and compared with experimental results.
As increasing demand for precise machining in advanced disciplines, especially in semi-conductor, aeronautical and automotive industries, the magnetic abrasive deburring(MAD) which is able to eliminate micro-sized burr on complex surface in less time has drawn the attention in the last decades. However, the performance of MAD is subject to shape and size of a tool. Therefore, this study aim to identify deburring behavior of MAD in U-type flow channel by measuring the length rate of burr removal in radial distance of the cylindrical tool under four process factors. In order to evaluate the deburring effect of MAD on the surface, finishing regions are divided based on center of the circular cutting tool. As a results, it was defined that the amount of burr removal in a downward direction moving toward flow channel from the top surface was higher than upward direction. This is because the magnetic abrasives were detached from magnetic lines of force due to geometrical shape.
Ceramic plates containing many micro-holes are used in diverse applications such as MCP (Microchannel Plate). catalytic converters, filters, electrical insulators in integrated circuits, and so on. One of the efficient methods for machining many holes in ceramic plates is wet drilling of ceramic green bodies followed by sintering them. Since the strength of ceramic green bodies is much lower than the strength of sintered ceramic plate, ceramic green bodies can be drilled with high feed rate. The axial force during micro-drilling of ceramic green bodies increases rapidly at high feed rate, which induces the crack in workpiece. Therefore, the tool lift of micro-drill with respect to feed rate may be determined by the predicting increase of axial force. In this work, the axial force during micro-drilling was calculated using the chip flow model on the micro-drill tip. from which the tool life of diamond abrasive micro-drill during micro-drilling of ceramic green bodies was calculated.
Fluid jet polishing is a method of jetting a fluid to polish a concave or free-form surface. However, the fluid jet method is difficult to form a stable polishing spot because of the lack of concentration. In order to solve this problem, MR fluid jet polishing system using an abrasive mixed with an MR fluid whose viscosity changes according to the intensity of a magnetic field is under study. MR fluid jet polishing is not easy to formulate for precise optimal conditions and material removal due to numerous fluid compositions and process conditions. Therefore, in this paper, quantitative data on the factors that have significant influence on the machining conditions are presented using various simulations and the correlation studies are conducted. In order to verify applicability of the fabricated MR fluid jet polishing system by nozzle diameter, the flow pattern and velocity distribution of MR fluid and polishing slurry of MR fluid jet polishing were analyzed by flow analysis and shear stress due to magnetic field changes was analyzed. The MR fluid of the MR fluid jet polishing and the flow pattern and velocity distribution of the polishing slurry were analyzed according to the nozzle diameter and the effects of nozzle diameter on the polishing effect were discussed. The analysis showed that the maximum shear stress was 0.45 mm at the diameter of 0.5 mm, 0.73 mm at 1.0 mm, and 1.24 mm at 1.5 mm. The cross-sectional shape is symmetrical and smooth W-shape is generated, which is consistent with typical fluid spray polishing result. Therefore, it was confirmed that the high-quality surface polishing process can be stably performed using the developed system.
The shearing process for the sheet metal is normally used in the precision elements such as semi-conductor components. In these precision elements, the burr formation brings a bad effect on the system assembly and demands the additional de-burring process. In this paper, we have developed the desktop-type precision punching system to investigate the burr formation mechanism and present kinematically Punch-die auto aligning methodology, for the purpose of burr unifomizing and minimizing, between the rectangular shaped punch and die. By using the scanning electron microscope, the aligned punching results are compared with the miss-aligned ones. Also, we measured the relative burr heights using the self-designed laser measuring device for insitu self aligning. Since it is hard to get the perfect, so called, burr-free edges during the shearing process, we introduced the ultrasonic do-burring machine. The de-burring operation was carried out by a novel do-burring method, the reversal flow resistance method, under different machining loads and abrasive types. The final do-burring results show the validity of our punching do-burring system pursuing the burr-free punched elements.
Acceleration sensors have widely been used in the various fields of industry. In recent years, micromachining accelerometers have been developed and commercialized by the micromachining technique or MEMS technique. Typical structure of such sensors consist of a cantilever beam and a vibrating mass fabricated on Si wafers using etching. This study investigates the feasibility of powder blasting technique for microfabrication of sensor structures made of the pyrex glass alternating the existing Si based acceleration sensor. First, as preliminary experiment, effect of blasting pressure, mass flow rate of abrasive and no. of nozzle scanning on erosion depth of pyrex and soda lime glass is studied. Then the optimal blasting conditions are chosen for pyrex sensor. Structure dimensions of designed glass sensor are 2.9mm and 0.7mm for the cantilever beam length and width and 1.7mm for the side of square mass. Mask material is from aluminium sheet of 0.5mm in thickness. Machining results showed that tolerance errors of basic dimensions of glass sensor ranged from 3um in minimum to 20um in maximum. This results imply the powder blasting can be applied for micromachining of glass acceleration sensors alternating the exiting Si based sensors.
It is well known that water jetting is now widely used in the advanced cutting processes of polymers, metals, glass, ceramics, and composite materials because of some advantages, such as heatless and non-contacting cutting different from the laser beam machining. In this paper, we proposed the simulation model of waterjet by lengths and the inner spiral structure of the nozzle. The simulation results show that the outlet velocity of the nozzle is faster than the inlet. Furthermore, we found rapid velocity reduction after passing through the outlet. The nozzle of diameter ${\phi}500$ and length 70mm, shows the optimal fluid width and velocity distribution. Also, the nozzle with inner spiral structure shows a Gaussian distribution of velocity and this model is almost twice as fast as the model without spiral structure, within the effective standoff distance (2.5 mm). In the future, when inserting abrasive material into the waterjet, we plan to analyze the fluid flow and the particle behavior through a simulation model.
