  • Hanji is a traditional handmade paper, which has been famous for its excellent qualities in strength, whiteness, gloss, and smooth feel in painting and writing in ancient Far East for many years. Nowadays, however, its old fame has declined and it has been used only in limited extent such as in traditional Korean brush painting and writing. In this study, 9 kinds of commercial handmade papers made in Korea, China, and Japan were collected and their printing and writing properties were evaluated by image analysis. Chinese handmade paper showed the best result in absorption area of China ink, the roundness and feathering of China ink blots, followed by Hanji. Abrasion coefficient of the Chineses papers was higher than that of the others, which was regarded to contribute to the difference in touch feeling of the writing brush on the papers. It was shown that absorption rate and blot area of China ink were increased by Dochim. Hanji which has recently been made by so called \"traditional method\" showed no quality difference from the modified Hanji.ied Hanji.

  • In this paper, in order to reduce the high COO (cost of ownership) and COC (cost of consumables), we have collected the silica abrasive powders by filtering method after subsequent CMP (chemical mechanical polishing) process for the purpose of abrasives recycling. And then, we have studied the possibility of recycle of reused silica abrasive through the analysis of particle size distribution and FE-SEM (field emission-scanning electron microscope) measurements of abrasive powders. It was annealed the collected abrasive powders to promote the mechanical strength of reduced abrasion force. Finally, we compared the CMP characteristics between self-developed KOH-based silica abrasive slurry and original slurry. As our experimental results, we obtained the comparable rate of removal and good planarity with commercial products. Consequently we can expect the saving of high cost slurry.

  • The sapphire wafers for blue light emitting devices were manufactured by the implementation of the surface machining technology based on micro-tribology. This process has been performed by chemical and mechanical polishing(CMP) process. The sapphire crystalline wafers were characterized by double crystal X-ray diffraction. The sample quality of sapphire crystalline wafer at surfaces has a full width at half maximum 89 arcses. The surfaces of sapphire wafers were mechanically affected by residual stress and surface default. Sapphire wafers's waveness has higher abrasion rate in the edge of the wafer than its center due to Newton's Ring interference.

  • We developed functional synthetic lubricant for internal combustion engine oil, which would improve engine oil performance for internal combustion engine and extend engine life. We made base oil by synthesizing nonanoic acid, 1.1.1-trimethylol propane (which has good bio-degradability) and pentaerythrytol ester. We synthesized catalyst using p-toluene sulfonic acid 0.15 wt% and coloring-prevention agent hypo-phosphorus acid 0.18 wt% at 180-$190^{\circ}C$. Reaction temperature was increased at the rate of $10^{\circ}C$ for every 1 hour. When acid value reached below 3, reaction was completed. After cooling and deoxidization, we washed it by distilled water two times. After dehydration and filtering, we obtained trimethylol propane tripelargonate (TMTP) and pentaerythrytol tetrapelargonate (PETP) at yields of 96 % and 98 % respectively.

  • The ballast, one of track components, plays an essential role as intermedium in transmitting train load to subgrade safely, and the deterioration of ballast directly effects the growth of track irregularity. In this study, we determined the main factor of ballast deterioration was miniature of ballast gravel caused MTT(Multiple Tie Tamper) works and accumulated traffic loads. To estimate the deterioration characteristics of ballast, we carried out field test through track construction for test and the model test simulating the actual operation environment, have done a comparative analysis with the sample's result(crushing rate) of high-speed railroad running actually.

  • Recently, CMP (Chemical mechanical polishing) technology has been widely used for global planarization of multi-level interconnection for ULSI applications. However, COO (cost of ownership) and COC (cost of consumables) were relatively increased because of expensive slurry. In this paper, we have studied the possibility of recycle of reused silica slurry in order to reduce the costs of CMP slurry. Also, we have collected the silica abrasive powders by filtering after subsequent CMP process for the purpose of abrasive particle recycling. And then, we annealed the collected abrasive powders to promote the mechanical strength of reduced abrasion force. • The interaction between wear and corrosion can significantly increase total material losses in water chemistry environment. The corrosive wear tests of a PWR steam generator tube material (Alloy 690) against the anti vibration bar material (409 SS) were performed at room temperature. The tests were performed in alkaline water chemistry conditions. NaOH solution was selected for test condition to investigate the corrosive wear effect of steam generator tube material in alkaline pH condition without other factors. The flow induced vibration can caused tube damage and the corrosion can be occurred by water chemistry. The test results showed that, in the alkaline solution at pH 13.9, the corrosion current density was increased about ten times than that in the distilled water. And wear rate at pH 13.9 was increased about ten times from that at neutral condition. However, the wear rate was decreased with time. The decrease would be attributed to the change in roughness of specimen or sub-layer of the worn surface with time. From microstructure observation, severe abrasive shape and several wear debris were found. From those results, it could infer that the oxide film on Alloy 690 changed to easily breakable one in the alkaline water, and then abrasion with corrosion became the main wear mechanism.

  • In this study, experiments were conducted with an ultra-precision machine, developed In domestic, to find the characteristics and the most suitable cutting conditions of ultra-precision machining. To maximize the performance of the machine, the machine was installed in a room that is protected from vibration and is maintained constant temperature and constant humidity. Selected work pieces are an aluminum-alloyed material, which has excellent corrosion resistance and has low deformation. The used tool is synthetic poly crystal diamond which has excellent abrasion resistance and has low affinity. Four types of tool nose radius were used such as 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4mm. Machining is performed with cutting speed of 500, 800 and 1000m/min., feed rate of 0.005, 0.008, 0.010mm/rev. and cutting depth of 0.0005, 0.0025 and 0.005mm respectively which can generally be used in the field as a cutting condition. As a method of evaluation surface roughness was measured for each cutting condition and reciprocal characteristics are computed for each tool nose radius, cutting speed, feed rate and cutting depth. As a result the most suitable cutting condition and characteristics of ultra-precision machining were identified which can usefully be applied in the industrial field.

  • To examine the grinding effect through preheating of waste concrete as a way of retrieving coarse aggregates from waste concrete, the removal rates of cement mortar and paste of both recycled aggregates and heated and grinded ones were investigated. As the preheating temperature increased, the removal rate of cement mortar from waste concrete was raised, and this kind of removal hardly affected the abrasion rate and specific gravity of aggregates. On the other hand, when it was treated over 40$0^{\circ}C$ of preheating temperature, the absorptance was reduced to less than 2.17, and cement mortar was effectively separated from waste concrete. It could meet the Korean Standards on recycled aggregates for concrete, and it is expected to expand the scope of utilization by making it possible to retrieve the aggregates which have the properties close to natural aggregates.
