A series of heavy section ductile cast iron ingots with the cube length of 250mm were systematically investigated as functions of casting parameters of sand casting. Abnormal graphite formation was specially observed with the variation of Si content and Bi or Sb addition. Effects of chilling during casting and adaptation of riserless system were also examined, and proved to be effective for the prevention of both shrinkage and abnormal graphite such as chunky one. The formation of chunky graphite was effectively prevented by low Si content despite the promotion of pearlite matrix structure. The ferritic matrix was encouraged to form by high Si content and chunky graphite formation was effectively suppressed by the addition of Bi and Sb. Bi addition, however, was not good enough to control the microstructure owing to the sensitive cooling rate dependent inoculation behavior and relative low ability of nodulization. Sb addition, on the other hand, was proved to be effective for the microstructural control and enhancement of various mechanical properties such as strength, elongation, and impact energy. It may be suggested that optimized casting parameters should be applied to produce heavy section ductile cast iron with reliability.
Now, the world is increasingly anxious about fine dust due to abnormal temperatures caused by global warming and increased yellow dust caused by desertification, and the World Health Organization (WHO) pointed out that more than 99% of the world's population is exposed to fine dust. In this situation, the reduction rate of fine dust and carbon dioxide of the matrix was tested by using expanded graphite, an eco-friendly and porous material, to improve air quality. As a result of the test, since expanded graphite is a material that expands between layers compared to conventional graphite, the reduction rate of fine dust and carbon dioxide decreases as the replacement rate of expanded graphite increases.
This study has been performed to inmvestigate MRR(metal removal rate), REW(relative electrode wear), surface roughness, heat transumutation layer and microhardness distribution in cross-section of the machined surface with various pulse-on duration and peak pulse current, using the copper and graphite electrode on the heat treated STD11 which is extensively used for metallic molding steel with the EDM. The results obtained are as follows; a) There exists critical pulse-on duration(If Ip equals 5A, .tau. on is 50 .mu. s) which shows the the maximum MRR in accordance with peak oulse current and the MRR decreases when the pulse-on duration exceeds the critical pulse-on during because of the abnormal electric discharge. b) Safe discharge is needed to make maximum of MRR and the metalic organization must be complicated for discharge induction. c) Graphite has much more benefits than copper electrode when rapid machining is done without electrode wear. d) The most external surface has the highest microhardness because of car- burizing from heat analysis of the dielectric fluid and the lower layar of the white covered layer has lower microhar dness than base matal because of softening.
The microstructural changes of three pieces from an ancient iron pot were studied in order to identify present the material degradation due to repeated heating for one-thousand years. The microstructures of the pieces were divided into the areas of ferrite/graphite, ferrite/pearlite, and corroded oxidation. The area of ferrite/graphite was undergone by severe Galvanic corrosion, but that of ferrite/pearlite was not even during a thousand years' using. The shape of the graphites was coexisted with types of A, B, and C of as modern graphite classification. In the ferrite/pearlite area, abnormal acicula precipitates with a high aspect ratio of $0.2{\mu}m$ thickness and several hundreds ${\mu}m$ length were presented. They might be a kind of carbide in the ferrite matrix with its special precipitate plane.
This study has been carried out to investigate into the rolling wear characteristics of austempered ductile iron under unlubricated dry rolling condition by Amsler type test with 9.09% sliding ratio. Wear amount is increased with increasing of ferrite and retained austenite and it has been found that the amount of rolling wear is decreased when the hardness of matrix are higher. The rolling life up to generation of abnormal condition is conspicusly increased and amount of rolling wear is increased asrolling revolutionis increased and wear of austempered ductile ironunder dry rolling condition. Matrix has been obtained to upper bainite, low bainite at heat treatment, obtained to bull`s eye structure at as cast. It has been found that the amount of rolling wear is decreased when the tensile strength of the casting are increased and then the rolling life up to generation of abnormal wear in conspicuously increased and amount of wear was intend to graphite content.
A heart supplies bloods of about 15, 000 liters to each human organ in a day. A normal function of heart valves is necessary to this act of heart. The disease of heart valve develops to a narrowness of a closure, resulting in an abnormal circulation of bloods. In an attempt to eliminate the affliction of heart valves, the operation method to repair with artificial heart valves has been developed and saved numerous patients over past 30 years. This replacement operation has been performed since early 1960`s in Korea, but all the artificial heart valves used are imported from abroad with very high costs until recent years. The artificial heart valve using pyrolytic carbon has been developed at KAIST, which was proved to be stable in the mechanical performance and durability. Therefore, the in viva performance of this valve was examined through animal tests. The artificial heart valves used in this study are tilting disc type valves, in which the disc were made of graphite coated with pyrolytic carbon and the cages were made of titanium. In viva testings of these valves were performed in 12 dogs, in which right ventriculo-pulmonary arterial [Croup I] or inter-aortic [Croup IV] valved conduit was implanted using polytetrafluoroethylene conduits containing KAIST valve and aortic valve [Group II] or pulmonary valve [Croup III] was replaced by a KAIST valve with a 21mm or 19mm tissue annulus diameter. In group I and II, pre-and post-operative transvalvular pressure gradient was measured and compared with other prosthetic valves. During post operative period laboratory examination was performed including hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell count, white cell, lactic acid dehydrogenase and platelet. The eight surviving dogs were sacrificed and autopsy was performed at 2, 6, and 8 weeks. KAIST valve has low transvalvular gradient and relatively high orifice area. Average ventriculo-aortic peak systolic transvalvular gradient was 14 mmHg in 21 mm valve and 19 mmHg in 19 mm valve. The valve has slight intravascular hemolysis effect. Thrombogenic effect of low polishing quality and eddy currents around small orifice is high. The valve has vulnerability of disc movement. These animal tests suggest that the improvement of the heart valve design, surface polishing state and prescription methods.
