  • Brake judder of an automotive vehicle is defined as an abnormal vibration of low frequency during braking. Under the assumption that judder occurs due to disc run-out and is a resonance phenomenon with a specific parts of the automobile, computational simulations using SAMCEF software were performed in this paper. The results show that the stabilizer of the car is a possible part which makes the judder vibration due to resonance. And initial braking velocity, the magnitude of run-out, and the friction coefficient between disk and pad are the influential factors to the brake judder.

  • The proposed algorithm tries to localize damage in a structure by monitoring abnormal increases in strain measurements from a group of wireless sensors. Initially, this clustering technique provides an effective sensor placement within a structure. Sensor clustering also assigns a certain number of master sensors in each cluster so that they can constantly monitor the structural health of a structure. By adopting a voting system, a group of wireless sensors iteratively forages for a damage location as they can be activated as needed. Numerical simulation demonstrates that the newly developed searching algorithm implemented on wireless sensors successfully localizes stiffness damage in a plate through the local level reconfigurable function of smart sensors.

  • This paper deals with sensing ability of smart sensor that has a sensing ability to distinguish materials according to surface types of smart sensor. We have developed a new signal processing method that can distinguish among different materials. The smart sensor was developed for recognition of materials. We made two types of smart sensors in our experiment. Then, we estimated the ability to recognize objects according to smart sensor type. We estimated the sensing ability of smart sensor with the $R_{SAI}$ method. Experiments and analysis were executed to estimate the ability to recognize objects according to surface types of smart sensor. Sensing ability of smart sensors was evaluated relatively through a new $R_{SAI}$ method. Applications of smart sensors are for finding abnormal conditions of objects (auto-manufacturing), feeling of objects (medical product), robotics, safety diagnosis of structure, etc.etc.

  • This paper describes a signal recognition method for diagnosing the rotating machinery using wavelet-aided Self-Organizing Feature Map(SOFM). The SOFM specialized from neural network is a new and effective algorithm for interpreting large and complex data sets. It converts high-dimensional data items into simple order relationships with low dimension. Additionally the Learning Vector Quantization(LVQ) is used for reducing the error from SOFM. Multi-resolution and wavelet transform are used to extract salient features from the primary vibration signals. Since it decomposes the raw timebase signal into two respective parts in the time space and frequency domain, it does not lose either information unlike Fourier transform. This paper is focused on the development of advanced signal classifier in order to automatize vibration signal pattern recognition. This method is verified by the experiment and several abnormal vibrations such as unbalance and rubbing are classified with high flexibility and reliability by the proposed methods.

  • In railway vehicle, riding comfort depends mainly on the secondary lateral damper and track condition. When the damping force of lateral damper becomes abnormal condition or the track condition is worse, the running stability and ride comfort of the railway vehicles go down. In addition, the lateral motion of carbody is increased. Therefore, the lateral motion of carbody is reviewed carefully by considering lateral damping force and track condition of the railway line in design stage. In this study, the lateral displacement of carbody was studied in accordance with lateral damping force and track condition. The target vehicle is EMU for subway line.

  • The abnormal vibration from the BTV(Brake Torque Variation) and DTV(Disc Thickness Variation) is transferred to the suspension and steering system during braking. In this paper, judder simulation is carried out using multi-body dynamic analysis program to analyze the relation of the judder and transfer mechanism which is composed of the suspension and steering system. In order to analyze the brake judder transfer system, the full vehicle model was composed with rigid body, non-linear bushing, non-linear constraints and joints. Full vehicle model analysis was compared by actual vehicle judder test and sensitivity analysis of the suspension system is carried out.

  • This paper presents a structural modification for the performance improvement of a grain sorting machine. The grain sorting machine is used to sort abnormal grains from normal grains such as rice or wheat. Vibration is one of main causes to deteriorate the sorting performance of the machine. Based on the finite element analysis and the experimental modal testing, the vibration characteristics were investigated for the sorting machine. Furthermore, in order to improve the sorting performance of the machine, the frame, chute and base plate of the sorting machine were modified by using the results of the vibration analysis.

  • This case study presents a practical method to reduce resonant vibration of generator-motor set. The generator is driven at 1800rpm by induction integral motor. The vibration is below alarm limits, but the dominant frequency of vibration is sub-synchronous and close to that of bearing fault signal in spite of new bearings. To find an mechanism of abnormal vibration, ODS and Modal analysis is carried out. The measured modal characteristics were compared with those of FE Analysis. The ODS mode at rated speed is consistent with system natural frequency mode that is excited by bearings. To reduce vibration level, the isolation mount at system base is changed with new rubber mount for lower natural frequency.

  • The intermittent high vibration has been occurred one or two times a day for a 500MW large steam turbine during 5 months. This abnormal vibration was caused by the rubbing between the rotor and the carbide accumulated on the seal tooth of oil deflector. It was found that the accumulated carbide was insulation material installed on the HIP casing from the examination of the chemical composition. Also, this paper presents the mechanism of the intermittent high vibration and the proper method to eliminate this vibration problem. This result would be good practice to find the solution of similar high vibration in the steam turbines for power plant as well as industrial rotating machineries.

  • The Nuclear Steam Supply System(NSSS) is designed to provide an integrated approach that includes areas of monitoring relevant to the integrity of the NSSS. LPMS is designed to function as an alarm system by providing sensor channel alarms for the associated subsystems. LPMS is equipped to provide analysis tools for new alarm events, historical events and for historical periodically stored channel data (e.g. waveforms) for most channels. This paper is intended to introduce the diagnosis principle and abnormal symptom of loose parts monitoring system as a monitoring tool in Nuclear Steam Supply System. And also, we are going to introduce signal analysis program in order to perform the actual diagnosis in power plants.
