  • In re-assessing the Jacket-type fixed steel structures, the current standards often allow the simplicity of corrosion sections using local buckling or equivalent section approach to applying empirical formulae of frame stress and resistance analyses. However, those approaches can lead to significant errors for non-uniform corroded frames in a specific area, including force distribution, stress, and allowable strength of the tubular section, compared to the actual cases. This paper investigates a suitable approach to determine the actual stress on non-uniform corroded tubular frames under compression through the non-linear ABAQUS model by considering the effect of large deformation on the frame axis and the frame section. There are 3 scenarios of interest. In the 1st and 2nd scenarios with simple corrosion cases, the stress ratios using the numerical model and theoretical formulae correspond to the calculation of allowable strength reduction ratios in standards. However, scenario 3, which describes non-uniform corroded sections based on survey data, provides considerable differences in results. Therefore, it proves the reliable and effective results when using this method to analyze the resistance of the actual corroded section in the Jacket platforms.

  • Headed bars are often used when there is insufficient space for a straight or curved bar to be fully developed to ensure the transference of forces between steel and concrete in several types of connections between structural members. In such cases, the concrete breakout strength of the headed bars can be a critical point of the design and must be considered appropriately. This paper evaluates the tensile strength of headed bars embedded in reinforced concrete members, failing due to concrete breakout. Four experimental tests on headed bars embedded in slender concrete members are presented and discussed, showing that strength previsions from the design codes can be significantly conservative as they ignore the contribution from the flexural reinforcement. 3D finite element models were developed using Abaqus Unified FEA to simulate the tested specimens, and it was observed that they were able to reproduce the formation of the concrete cone accurately, besides the response and resistance observed in tests. Furthermore, the experimental, numerical, and design code resistances are compared and discussed. A new equation to evaluate the concrete cone strength of the tested headed bars is proposed, which takes into account parameters not explicitly considered in the current design equations.

  • In the present study, the effect of geometrical parameters of two different types of aluminum thin-walled structures on energy absorption under three-bending impact loading has been investigated experimentally and numerically. To evaluate the effect of parameters on the specific energy absorption (SEA), initial peak crushing force (IPCF), and the maximum crushing distance (δ), a design of experiment technique (DOE) with response surface method (RSM) was applied. Four different thin-walled structures have been tested under the low-velocity impact, and then they have simulated by ABAQUS software. An acceptable consistency between the numerical and experimental results was obtained. In this study, statistical analysis has been performed on various parameters of three different types of tubes. In the first and the second statistical analysis, the dimensional parameters of the cross-section, the number of holes, and the dimensional parameter of holes were considered as the design variables. The diameter reduction rate and the number of sections with different diameters are related to the third statistical analysis. All design points of the statistical method have been simulated by the finite element package, ABAQUS/Explicit. The final result shows that the height and thickness of tubes were more effective than other geometrical parameters, and despite the fact that the deformations of the cylindrical tubes were around forty percent greater than the rectangular tubes, the top desirability was relevant to the cylindrical tubes with reduced cross-sections.

  • The gas-gun test is a experimental approach employed to validate the operational or structural stability when subjected to the impact energy encountered during launch or target collision. Predicting the outcomes of the gas-gun test has traditionally relied on empirical knowledge, due to numerous factors such as the bird assembly's shape, weight, material, and flight velocity. However, due to the nonlinearity and complex interactions between these variables, numerous tests are necessary to identify the necessary requirements, resulting in significant expense and time consumption during the process. The objective of this study is to forecast the variations in impact energy in future tests by developing a numerical model and analysis that aligns with the test outcomes, utilizing the ABAQUS Explicit. The outcome of the numerical analysis produced a framework that anticipates the peak g and the duration of the actual gas-sun test results, throughout post-processing techniques using FFT and LPF filters.

  • High manganese steel exhibits excellent mechanical properties with respect to strength and durability at low temperatures. Recently, high manganese steel has been considered as an alternative to existing materials, such as nickel steel and SUS304L for application as tank material for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cargo containment systems. In the present study, tensile tests were performed at room and cryogenic temperatures in order to investigate the mechanical properties and non-linear tensile behavior of high manganese steel. In addition, elasto-plastic damage model was applied using the finite element analysis software ABAQUS via a user defined material subroutine (UMAT) to describe the material behavior. Finally, the results of the finite element simulations using the UMAT were compared to those of the tensile tests in order to validate the proposed UMAT. It has been demonstrated that the UMAT can effectively describe the non-linear tensile behavior of high manganese steel.

  • In this paper, the structural weakness analysis and quality improvement of small fixed wing UAV of the hard landing type were studied. Unlike conventional aircraft, small UAV does not use runways because of its small size. Instead, small UAV use hand launch takeoff and hard landings. This type has many operational advantages because it can take off and land in a narrow space. But, the hard landing has a strong impact on the structure of the UAV and can cause serious damage. In order to analyze the exact cause of this phenomenon, the structural analysis was carried out using the 3D structural analysis program (ABAQUS) to identify the location of the fracture. And to improve the accuracy of the structural analysis, properties of the material were obtained through specimen test. As a result of the analysis, structural weaknesses were identified and improved. Thus, the validity of the study was verified by demonstrating the quality of enhanced structure through a real impact test at a higher level of 1.5 times the maximum impact during operation.

  • In order to analyze stamping processes and to select optimum material properties of sheet steels for customer lines, 3-dimensional finite element analysis software were used. Commercial explicit finite element code, PAM-STAMP, was able to simulate 3-dimensional press formed parts with good accuracy and gave some useful results by orthogonal array experiments. Deformation of draw-bead were predicted by ABAQUS accurately, so that material selection for those parts by simulation were possible.
