The convergence process utilized both leaching and ion exchange techniques has been investigated for the heavy metals removal in the abandoned mine of Chungyang Province, Korea. The contaminated soil samples by heavy metals from Samkwang mine were analysed by statistical analyses. The highly contaminated soils was initially separated by the flotation process. The selectivity indices were increased with increasing flotation reagents. The selectivity of separation was then improved by the use of both leaching and ion exchange processes in order to extract the heavy metals. The results of this study showed that the higher the sulfuric acid concentration, the leaching rate of heavy metals was increased. The lecheate then was removed by the ion exchange method. The anticipating results might imply that convergence process utilized both leaching and ion exchange techniques would somehow apply for the removal of heavy metals in the abandoned mine.
Seral changes in environmental factors and recovery of soil fertility during abandoned field succession after shifting cultivation were investigated in eastern Kangwon-Do, Korea. Relative light intensity of herb and shrub layer decreased gradually until 50 years and increased slightly thereafter. Amount of litter and nutrients derived from it were depicted as a parabola form showing the gradual increment during the first 50 years and slight decrease thereafter. Organic matter, pH value, total-N and Mg of soil were plotted as an early depletion-mid pinnacle form showing the extrems depletion during the first 10 years, abrupt increase in about 20 or 50 years and gradual decrease thereafter. Ca, Al, Mn and Na of soil were depicted as a pinnacle form showing the peak in about 20 or 50 years. Thickness and field capacity of soil increased gradually, but K and total-P did not show any tendency as succession proceeded. The soil fertility, overall capacity of soil nutrients and water for plant growth, was plotted as the early depletion-mid pinnacle form.
In order to assess the impacts of drawdown for land-use change on a Sphagnum-marsh, we compared the vegetation and flora of the wetland before and after the drawdown with focusing on the population of Sphagnum palustre L. Remarkable changes in the coverage of S. palustre and the major vegetational components of the wetland were observed. The coverage of S. palustre markedly decreased by about 75% (from approx. 247 ㎥ in 2011 to approx. 62 ㎥ in 2015) after the drawdown. Tree species such as Salix spp. extended (from about 70% to about 83% in the total coverage of the wetland), whereas herbaceous species shrunk after the drawdown. Upland-inhabiting species such as obligate plants for uplands (OBU) increased, whereas wetland-inhabiting species such as facultative plants for wetlands (FACW) and OBW decreased in terms of vegetational coverage. The total number of plant species decreased from 70 species to 62 species after the drawdown, including the disappearance of some wetland-inhabiting species from the wetland. We suggest that the attention for further studies on the abandoned paddy terraces (APTs) and effort for the management and conservation of APTs and APT-inhabiting species that are vulnerable to human-induced disturbances have to be paid more.
To estimate presumptive local ground subsidence area near Abandoned Under ground Coal Mine(AUCM) at Samcheok city in Korea, the geological properties of existing ground subsidence area and the geophysical prospecting data were analyzed using GIS. The electrical resistivity survey and seismic reflection survey database were constructed from investigation reports and factors which are related with ground subsidence such as geological map, topological map, land use map, lineament map, groundwater level, RMR (Rock Mass Rating), mining tunnel map and slope database were constructed also to make a comparative study of each parameters. As a result of the spatial analysis of existing ground subsidence area, 9 major factors causing ground subsidence were extracted and a connection between the structure of underground and the ground subsidence was determined from the analysis of geophysical prospecting data. The estimation of presumptive ground subsidence area was performed using the correlation between the result from neural network analysis of 9 factors and the scrutiny of geophysical prospecting data.
The rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) established from the shattered grains by combine harvesting at the previous year showed great variations of yield and yield components from site to site at the abandoned rice crop field. The cultural condition was very similar to direct seeding under no-tillage system but no cultural practices such as application of fertilizer, weed control, irrigation and drainage had been carried out. The highest yield of 188kg/10a was observed at one of the quadrats randomly located on the field, which showed the possibility of exploitation of no-tillage system. The interrelationship between crop growth and coverage of weed species was measured by calculating the correlation coefficients. The investigations of how to establish sufficient number of seedlings per unit area, plant succession on the abandoned crop field, crop mixture with legume crops, and breeding appropriate plant type of rice for the enhancement of competitive ability would be required for the success of no-tillage system.
Due to the steep and narrow characteristic of domestic coal beds, the slant chute caving or sub-level caving method have been mainly adopted in Korea, whereas the long-wall mining has been widely used all around world. However, the slant chute caving or sub-level caving method have disadvantage of not giving much information on the scale and characteristic of abandoned mines. Hence, those information on the abandoned mines in Korea are not easily available. In this study, based on the characteristic investigation of the domestic mining methods, the geological survey and safety analysis were carried out for Donghae highway section 2. Finally, the optimum ground reinforcement methods for that site were selected.
The ground subsidence that occurred in an abandoned coal mining area, Gaeun, Korea, was observed by using 25 JERS-1 SAR interferograms from November 1992 to October 1998. We estimated the subsidence on a subset of image pixels corresponding to point-wise permanent scatters (PSs) by exploiting a long temporal series of interferometric phases. The results were compared it with a distribution map of in situ examined crack level. PSs were identified by means of amplitude dispersion index and coherence of the interferograms. The measured subsidence rate represented the average velocity in a period of image acquisition and excluded complex nonlinear displacements such as an abrupt collapse. The mean line-of-sight velocity in the study area is 0.19cm/yr and an r.m.s. error is 0.18cm/yr. The center of the abandoned Gaeun coal mine (0.49cm/yr) and the area near to the Gaeun station (1.66cm/yr) were observed as most rapidly subsiding areas.
In this study, we predicted locations vulnerable to ground subsidence hazard using fuzzy logic and geographic information system (GIS). Test was carried out at an abandoned underground coal mine in Samcheok City, Korea. Estimation of relative ratings of eight major factors influencing subsidence and determination of effective fuzzy operators are presented. Eight major factors causing ground subsidence were extracted and constructed as a spatial database using the spatial analysis and the probability analysis functions. The eight factors include geology, slope, landuse, depth of mined tunnel, distance from mined tunnel, RMR, permeability, and depth of ground water. A frequency ratio model was applied to calculate relative rating of each factor, and the ratings were integrated using fuzzy membership function and five different fuzzy operators to produce a ground subsidence susceptibility map. The ground subsidence susceptibility map was verified by comparing it with the existing ground subsidences. The obtained susceptibility map well agreed with the actual ground subsidence areas. Especially, ${\gamma}-operator$ and algebraic product operator were the most effective among the tested fuzzy operators.

This study was conducted to identify native ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi colonizing Pinus densiflora for revegetation of abandoned coal mines in Korea. Seedlings of P. densiflora growing on coal mining spoils of a study site in Samcheok were collected. ECM roots were observed under stereomicroscope and their DNA were extracted from each root tip for a seedling for molecular identification. A PCR primer pair specific to fungi, ITS1F and ITS4, was used to amplify fungal DNA. Restriction enzymes, Alul and Hinfl were used for restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Combined with RFLP profiles and sequence analysis, total twenty one taxa were identified from the ECM root tips. Basidiomycetous fungi including Thelephoraceae, Pezizales, Laccaria, Pisolithus and Ascomycetous fungi including ericoid mycorrhizal fungi were identified from this study. Results showed that the most frequently found in the study sites was a species in Thelephoraceae. A possible use of ECM fungi identified in this study for the revegetation of abandoned coal mines with P. densiflora was discussed.

It is important to detect dangerous objects which are intentionally abandoned in public places. Nowadays visual surveillance system is required to enhance the performance in two ways : high resolution and wireless linking ability. In this study the design of visual surveillance system is newly proposed to detect abandoned objects for social security purpose based on wireless high resolution image transmission technology. Also, to enhance PED, PAT performance, the tracking algorithm is included in the previous visual surveillance software scheme. By implementing proposed design scheme on the real wireless high resolution image transmission system, the effectiveness of the overall system is shown with the transmission performance of 4.0 Gbps speed.
