인산 및 규산 이온이 포함된 수용액에서 AZ31 마그네슘 합금의 플라즈마 전해산화 피막의 구조에 미치는 수산화나트륨 농도의 영향 (Effects of NaOH Concentration on the Structure of PEO Films Formed on AZ31 Mg Alloy in PO43- and SiO32- Containing Aqueous Solution)

  • The structure of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings was investigated as a function of NaOH concentration in 0.06 M $Na_2SiO_3$ + 0.06 M $Na_3PO_4$ solution by using SEM and epoxy replica method. The PEO film was formed on AZ31 Mg alloy by the application of anodic pulse current with 0.2 ms width and its formation behavior was studied by voltage-time curves during the formation of PEO films. It was found that the addition of NaOH into $PO_4{^{3-}}$ and $SiO_3{^{2-}}$ containing aqueous solution causes a decrease in the PEO film formation voltage, suggesting that dielectric breakdown of the PEO becomes easier with increasing $OH^-$ ion concentration in the solution. With increasing $OH^-$ ion concentration, thickness of the PEO film increased and surface roughness decreased. The size of pores formed in the PEO layer became smaller and the number of cracks in the PEO layer increased with increasing $OH^-$ ion concentration. Based on the experimental results obtained in the work, it is suggested that $OH^-$ ions in the solution can contribute not only to the dielectric breakdown but also to the formation of PEO films in the presence of $PO_4{^{3-}}$ and $SiO_3{^{2-}}$ ions in the solution.

PEO 처리시 Ca-GP첨가에 따른 AZ31합금의 내식성 및 표면특성에 관한 연구 (A study on corrosion resistance and surface properties of AZ31 alloy according to Ca-GP addition during PEO treatment)

  • PEO (plasma electrolytic oxidation) was applied to modify the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy in this study. The mixed solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) was used as the electrolyte, and 0 - 0.05 g/L of Ca-GP (Glycerol Phosphate Calcium salt) was added in the electrolyte as an additive. PEO treatment was conducted at a current density of 30mA/cm2 for 5 minutes using a DC power supply. The surface properties were identified by SEM, XRD and surface roughness analyses, and the corrosion resistance was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests. In addition, the biocompatibility was evaluated by immersion test in SBF solution. As the concentration of Ca-GP was increased, the surface morphology was denser and more uniform, and the amount of Ca and the thickness of oxide layer increased. Only Mg peak was observed in XRD analysis due to very thin oxide layer. The corrosion resistance of PEO-treated samples increased with the concentration of Ca-GP in comparision with the untreated sample. In particular, the highest corrosion resistance was identified at the group of 0.04g Ca-GP through potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests in saline solution (0.9 wt.%NaCl). During the immersion in saline solution, pH rapidly increased at the beginning of immersion period due to rapid corrosion, and then increase rate of pH decreased. However, the pH value in the SBF temporarily increased from 7.4 to 8.5 during the day, then decreased due to the inhibition of corrosion with HA(hydroxyapatite) formation.

  • The study for thixoextrusion process of 7075, 7003 Al wrought alloys and AZ31 Mg wrought alloy was carried out with respect to reheating rate, isothermal holding temperature and time with an emphasis to the effect of homogenization on thixotropic micro-structures during the partial remelting, especially in the low liquid fraction ($f_L<0.2$). The liquid fraction and average grain size with respect to reheating profile such as reheating rate, isothermal holding temperature and time were almost uniform. It is considered very useful for thixoextrusion in terms of process control such as billet temperature control and actual extrusion time. Micro-structural controls of 7075, 7003 Al wrought alloys and AZ31 Mg wrought alloy before and after homogenization were available and thixotropic microstructures were obtained in both specimens.

  • Many studies have been conducted on the process of forming magnesium alloy sheets to reduce the body weights of vehicles. Magnesium has a lower specific gravity than steel and also has a higher specific strength. Mg alloy sheets have low formability and a lot of springback due to their limited ductility and low young's modulus. As the temperature increases, the yield strength of the material decreases. Warm forming increases the formability and minimizes the springback of a material by heating it and the die to reduce the required load at forming. In this study, the temperature of the AZ31B sheet was controlled in order to reduce springback and increase formability. However, as the temperature increased, the deformation characteristics of the material changed and the radius of curvature of the material increased. The load and springback amount required for forming were analyzed according to the temperature and the bottoming force in the bending deformation.

AZ31마그네슘합금의 마찰접합특성 (Mechanical Properties of Friction Joint of AZ31Mg Alloy)

  • Magnesium alloy has been known as lightweight material in automobile and electronic industry with aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and plastic material. Friction welding is useful to join various metals and nonferrous metals that are difficult to join by such as gas welding, resistance welding and electronic beam welding. In this study, friction joining was performed to investigate mechanical properties of Mg alloy with 20mm diameter solid bar. Also the optimal joining conditions for its application were determined on the basis of tensile test, and hardness survey. The joining parameters were chosen as heating pressure, heating time, upsetting pressure, and upsetting time. Heating and upsetting pressure were executed under the range of 10~40MPa and 20~80MPa, respectively. From the experimental results, optimal joining conditions were determined as follows; rotating speed=2000rpm, heating pressure=35MPa, upsetting pressure=70MPa, heating time=1sec, upsetting time=5sec. Also the hardness of jointed boundary showed as HV50 which was similar to that of base metal at the optimal condition, and it was supposed that zone of HAZ was 8mm. Finally two materials were strongly mixed at interface part to show a well-combined microstructure without particle growth or any defect.

  • Although magnesium alloy has received much attention to date for its lightweight and high specific strength, their applications are impeded by the low formability which is caused by the hexagonal crystal structure at room temperature. In general, equal-channel angular extrusion(ECAE) is recognized as one of the attractive severe plastic deformation techniques where the processed bulk metals generally achieve ultrafine-grained microstructure leading to improved physical characteristics and mechanical properties. ECAE process has several parameters such as angle of die, process temperature, process route and speed. During ECAE process of Mg alloy, these parameters has great influence on the extrudability and the mechanical properties of alloy. The aim of this study is to estimate the influences of process conditions on the formability of AZ31 and AZ31-CaO alloys. Mg alloys are processed through ECAE at elevated temperatures using three types of die with channel angle of $90^{\circ}$, $110^{\circ}$, $135^{\circ}$ using route $B_c$, respectively. This study discusses the feasibility of using ECAE to improve both formability and strength on magnesium alloys by comparative analyzing the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution in each condition.

  • Since the sheet metal forming of Mg alloy is perform at elevated temperature, the effect of strain rates related with the forming temperature and forming speed and R-value is very important factor for formability and forming limits and deep drawing. It is investigated that the effect of material properties such as various temperature, forming speed and strain rates on formability and R-value of Mg alloy sheet in round cup deep drawing. Therefore, the investigation for process variables is necessary to improve formability and forming limits and deep drawing. Also, the effects of strain rate and drawbility were studied by the experiment. The temperature, forming speed, and strain rates and R-value are investigated. Forming of Mg alloy takes consider into temperature, proper forming speed and strain-rate and R-value the formed parts were good without defects for forming limits and deep drawing.

해양차량 경량화용 마그네슘합금의 마찰용접 및 AE 특성 (Friction Welding and AE Characteristics of Magnesium Alloy for Lightweight Ocean Vehicle)

  • In this paper, friction welded joints were constructed to investigate the mechanical properties of welded 15-mm diameter solid bars of Mg alloy (AZ31B). The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure reliable quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, impact energy test, Vickers hardness surveys of the bonds in the area and heat affected zone (HAZ), and macrostructure investigations. The study reached the following conclusions. The tensile strength of the friction welded materials (271 MPa) was increased to about 100% of the AZ31B base metal (274 MPa) under the condition of a heating time of 1 s. The metal loss increased lineally with an increase in the heating time. The following optimal friction welding conditions were determined: rotating speed (n) = 2000 rpm, heating pressure (HP) = 35 MPa, upsetting pressure (UP) = 70 MPa, heating time (HT) = 1 s, and upsetting time (UT) = 5 s, for a metal loss (Mo) of 10.2 mm. The hardness distribution of the base metal (BM) showed HV55. All of the BM parts showed levels of hardness that were approximately similar to friction welded materials. The weld interface of the friction welded parts was strongly mixed, which showed a well-combined structure of macro-particles without particle growth or any defects. In addition, an acoustic emission (AE) technique was applied to derive the optimum condition for friction welding the Mg alloy nondestructively. The AE count and energy parameters were useful for evaluating the relationship between the tensile strength and AE parameters based on the friction welding conditions.

마그네슘 합금강의 제2세대 자기연마에서 표면거칠기 예측모델 개발 (Development of Prediction Model and Parameter Optimization for Second-Generation Magnetic Abrasive Polishing of Magnesium Alloy)

  • 본 연구에서는 AZ31B 마그네슘 합금 평판 연마에 제 2세대 자기연마공정을 적용하고 실험계획법을 통해 공정인자들의 특성을 평가하였으며, 2차 반응표면모델을 이용한 표면거칠기 예측모델을 개발하였다. 비자성체 재료의 기존 자기연마 공정에서는 재료의 표면에서 자기력이 낮아 표면거칠기의 향상에 효율이 낮은 단점을 가진다. 이를 보완하기 위하여 전자석 배열을 이용한 자기력 테이블을 자기연마 공정에 적용하여 비자성체 표면의 자기력을 향상시킬 수 있었다. 이러한 시스템을 제 2세대 자기연마라 일컫고, 실험계획법에 따른 공정 인자 평가 결과, 자기력 테이블의 전자석 세기가 AZ31B 평판의 표면 거칠기 향상에 가장 큰 영향을 가지고 있음을 확인했다. 또한 자기력 테이블과 공구의 회전속도에 따른 반응표면모델을 개발함으로써 마그네슘 자기연마 공정의 효율성을 높일 수 있었다.

유한요소해석에 의한 마그네슘 합금의 임펠러 제조공정연구 (A Study on Magnesium Alloy Impeller Manufacturing Process using Finite Element Simulation)

  • This study focuses on the manufacturing process of a magnesium alloy impeller used for the fuel cell car using the hot forging technology. The impeller has the very complicated shape with sharply curved blade and thus generally produced by mechanical machining or casting process. However, since these technologies give the high manufacturing cost or poor mechanical properties, the forging technology is required to make the high-quality impeller with the lower manufacturing cost. In order for production of the impeller by forging technology, the parametric studies using finite element analyses were carried out to find the optimal perform shape of impeller made of magnesium alloy AZ 31 and finally die design was proposed based on the simulation results.
