  • It was carried out to evaluate microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded(FSW) on magnesium alloys. Two types magnesium alloy was used in this work, AZ31 wrought and AZ91 cast magnesium alloy. Microstructure near the weld zone showed general weld structures such as stir zone(SZ), thermo-mechanically affected zone(TMAZ) and heat affected zone(HAZ). In the AZ91 alloy, the SZ had a fine grain size and $\beta$ phase particles which were well distributed in matrix. It was characterized to redistribute by partial or full re-solution of the $\beta$ phase which is coarse in base metal during FSW processing. The hardness of the SZ slightly increase than the base metal in AZ31 Mg alloy.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of annealing treatment on cold formability of magnesium alloy sheet AZ31. The AZ31 sheets with three different thickness (1.0t, 1.6t, 2.0t) were annealed at three different temperatures ($345^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$). The mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of the annealed AZ31 were examined as well as limit dome height (LDH) and compared with those of as received one. The cold formability was enhanced but the strength was deteriorated by the annealing treatment.

  • The warm drawing of magnesium alloy AZ31B sheet is affected by temperature because tensile elongation is changed due to the elevated temperature. In the current study, the effect of temperature was investigated for an automotive dash panel part by both experimental and FE analysis. Tensile tests were performed to obtain mechanical properties for various temperatures. AZ31B alloy sheet shows increased total elongation with increasing deformation temperature in the range of 200 to 300℃. The heating channel inserted into the die was used to regulate and to obtain an optimal temperature. A temperature controller was constructed to reduce temperature variation. Warm drawing of magnesium alloy AZ31B was performed to produce the desired shape of the lightweight automotive dash panel. The simulated results showed good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The mechanical properties and optical micrographs are studied for rolled magnesium alloy sheet with hexagonal close packed structure(HCP) at room and elevated temperatures. Tensile properties such as tensile strength, elongation, R-value and n-value are also measured for AZ31 magnesium alloy. Magnesium with strong texture of basal plane parallel to the rolling direction usually has high R-value and plastic anisotropy at room temperature. As temperature increases, the R-value for AZ31 magnesium sheet decreases. In addition, the AZ31 sheet becomes isotropy and recrystallization above $200^{\circ}C$. Formability of magnesium alloy sheets remarkably poor at room temperature is improved by increasing temperature. Sheet forming of magnesium alloy is practically possible only at high temperature range where plastic anisotropy disappears.

  • The effect of temperature on the forming limit diagram was investigated for AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet through the limit dome height test in the range from room temperature to $300^{\circ}C$. The formability of AZ31B sheet was improved significantly according to the increasing temperature. Also we studied the springback characteristics through the 2D draw bending test with different blank holding forces at elevated temperatures. Springback quantity was considerably reduced as temperature went up. The blank holding force in the range used, however, had little influence on springback. Experimental results obtained in this study may provide a material database for AZ31B sheet.

  • The dissimilar welding between magnesium alloy and steel sheet was required in automobile industry to increase the strength of the dissimilar joints. Laser brazing is one of the good joining processes for Mg- steel dissimilar joint. In this study, AZ31 magnesium alloy and Zn coated steel dissimilar joint was brazed using diode direct laser with Mg600 filler wire and Superior #21 flux. The wetting of Mg filler wire on Zn coating was very good because of the formation of eutectic phase with low melting temperature. The strength of the brazed joint between AZ31 magnesium alloy and Zn coated steel was 131.3N/mm. The fracture occurred at brazement.

  • In the present investigation, the multi-stage warm drawing process was applied to the magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet to examine the feasibility of multi-stage forming process as a high formability product making process. For that purpose, a multi-stage drawing die system with heating module was developed, and the AZ31 sheets of different sizes were consecutively drawn by the multi-stage drawing die. The obtained drawn cups of AZ31 showed that the multi-stage drawing provided the better formability than the single stage drawing in terms of drawing depth without cup defects such as wrinkles or fractures. The sheet formability improvement by using the multi-stage drawing die system against the single stage was also analyzed in terms of the finite element analysis of material state variables evolution.

  • AZ31 Mg alloy were coated by Macro Arc Oxidation(MAO) with 3 types of electrolyte and various coating times at 4A/$cm^2$. The Surface morphology of coatings became lager pores and surface crack initiated as the coating time increased. The thickness and micro-hardness of coatings increased as the coating time increased. also. The phase of coatings on AZ31 alloy consisted of MgO, $Mg_2SiO_4$ and $MgAl_2O_4$ oxides. The salt spray corrosion resistance of coated AZ31 alloys revealed excellent corrosion resistance in 5% NaCl solution for 168hr.

  • Melt foaming method is one of cost-effective methods to make metal foam and it has been successfully applied to fabricate Mg foams. In this research, AZ31 Mg alloy ingot was used as a metal matrix, using AlCa granular as thickening agent and $CaCO_3$ powder as foaming agent, AZ31 Mg alloy foams were fabricated by melt-foaming method at different foaming temperatures. The porosity was above 41.2%~73.3%, pore size was between 0.38~1.52 mm, and homogenous pore structures were obtained. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the AZ31 Mg alloy foams were investigated by optical microscopy, SEM and UTM. The results showed that pore structure and pore distribution were much better than those fabricated at lower temperatures. The compression behavior of the AZ31 Mg alloy foam behaved as typical porous materials. As the foaming temperature increased from $660^{\circ}C$ to $750^{\circ}C$, the compressed strength also increased. The AZ31 Mg alloy foam with a foaming temperature of $720^{\circ}C$ had the best energy absorption. The energy absorption value of Mg foam was 15.52 $MJ/m^3$ at a densification strain of 52%. Furthermore, the high energy absorption efficiencies of the AZ31 Mg alloy foam kept at about 0.85 in the plastic plateau region, which indicates that composite foam possess a high energy absorption characteristic, and the Vickers hardness of AZ31 Mg alloy foam decreased as the foaming temperature increased.

  • The plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process is a relatively new surface treatment technique that produces a chemically stable and environment-friendly electrolytic coating that can be applied to all types of magnesium alloys. In this study, the characteristics of oxide film were examined after coating the extruded AZ31 alloy through the PEO process. Hard ceramic coatings were obtained on the AZ31 alloy by changing the coating time from 10min to 60min. The morphologies of the surface and the cross-section of the PEO coatings were examined by scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy, and the thickness of the coating was measured. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the coating shows that the coated layer consists mainly of the MgO and $Mg_2SiO_4$ phases after the oxidation reaction. The hardness of the coated AZ31 alloy increased with increasing coating time. In addition, the corrosion rates of the coated and uncoated AZ31 alloys were examined by salt spray tests according to ASTM B 117 and the results show that the corrosion resistance of the coated AZ31 alloy was superior to that of the un-coated AZ31 alloy.
